Re: Things you can't enjoy anymore because they're problematic

Old Britcoms, the general homophobia, transphobia and occasional brownface just do a number on my ability to watch all that old stuff. Then again, I hear it isn't just confined to old Britcoms if the buzz around something called Mrs Brown's Boys" or "Little Britain" is anything to go by.

I haven't noticed the Basement Warriors "problems" with Sherlock or Doctor Who though.

Elementary's ableism and humor derived from mental health jokes are just not funny anymore. I get I'm supposed to see it as superior to Sherlock, but all I see are the same innuendos that come out of Big Bang Theory, only without any intended in-group humor.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I only watched a few episodes, years ago), but wasn't Little Britain supposed to be so-awful-it's-funny? R-rated Monty Python or something like that?

They only managed the awful part then. It was not a patch on the old Python blokes. Maybe they should have stopped trying to ape humor from the 70s and ignoring that it was the 2000's, and developed something new instead. Not even the Pythons were as good as the Pythons a lot of the time, which people seem to forget.

I don't watch Elementary but all I seem to see about the show is praising it for it's inclusiveness and excellent diverse cast writing blah blah blah. Are there a lot of ableism and the like jokes peppered throughout? Has Tumblr been lying to me all this time? *gasp*

Tumblr's SJ brigade lying, yeah I can see how that would come as such a shock. Pretty much though, they just saw No!Moffat Gurl!Watson and declared it a utopian retelling, letting it pass uncritically. Actually watching it is like a totally different show from the tumblr brigade's version.

I'm usually pretty sensitive to ableism and mental health humour, given I've got a pretty severe mental illness, and I haven't noticed anything like that. If anything, mental illness has been treated fairly sensitively. Sherlock gets really pissed off at people taking advantage of mentally ill people, as happens in one case, and while another episode has a schizophrenic man suffering from a delusional episode, it's not played for laughs as far as I recall. Sherlock's addiction is also handled pretty sensitively.

Elementary's ableism and humor derived from mental health jokes are just not funny anymore.

Wait, what? Do you have an example? I'm not saying I doubt you, I just can't remember any off the top of my head and my google-fu has failed me.

Could you give an example of ableism and mental illness-derived humour in Elementary?

I'd really like an Elementary example. I haven't been watching the show very attentively, so I may have missed something, but I'm not certain what you're referring to.
