Is there anything else on Dreamwidth that people actually care about? I'd never even heard of it before FS moved here.

well said. that last line is especially great :)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly agree.

And the other amusing thing is that a ton of the time, sites will criticize each other to no end while also having userbases with substantial overlap. Like, you see this all the time with places like SA, Reddit, and 4chan criticizing each other - there's massive crossover between all of those sites, and yet each of them can get up on their high horse and dismiss the others as worthless holes where no one of intelligence would ever deign to post.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I have never heard of spartz. Must go look that up.

But yes, mostly agree. Everyone has their site they like to bash and then they have their paragon of friendliness when really all sites contain multitudes.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
... yes, although everyone knows the REAL cesspit is AFF.

I've never even heard of Spartz before. Apparently it has something to do with Harry Potter?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
The funniest thing to me is when people act like there's no crossover between the sites. Like there are "tumblr people" and "facebook people" instead of what I would presume to be the largest population - "people who have tumblr and facebook".

Might be a matter of attitude. I'm on Facebook, and I post here of course, but pretty much what I actually am is a regular poster on TTLG (forum I go to.)

Isn't ff.net usually considered the worst? It's been called the Pit of Voles for years.

(I'm not against ff.net - it's better for some anime fandoms than AO3.)

I never got this, either!

Websites usually have a lot of individual cultures within them, and no one of those is everyone's cup of tea. But there's usually somewhere you'll fit in, and like another poster said, there tends to be overlap between them.

Maybe the people who go around claiming a certain site is a cesspit just had a bad first experience that colored their impression of the whole place? I dunno, man.

ehhh. I think some are generally worse than others (and I use a lot of them) but you're right, no site is perfect.

I thought everyone called 4chan the "cesspit of the internet" though.

Eh, no site is perfect and I think most people realize that. Sure everyone has their preferences, but plenty of people also have accounts on multiple sites and just like the complain about their issues with them. I know I do, occasionally.

Secret 11 - Rivalry of websites

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the logos of the websites "Tumblr", "Archive Of Our Own", "LiveJournal", "Fandom Secrets", "Facebook", "YouTube", "spartz" and "FanFiction.Net".]

I've participated in all of these sites, but what's funny is that nearly all of them target one or more of the other sites as the cesspit of the internet, full of the worst people on the web and generally just the Satan's rectum of the world. However, if confronted on their own dickery, they all get very defensive of their site, refusing to accept the shitty things they do.

As someone who likes all these sites, I wish people could admit that their preferred site isn't a shining beacon of light in a sea of shit. The whole internet is shitty as well as fun and entertaining. All of these sites are hostile places as well as fun and entertaining places. I wish more people could accept the good and the bad, rather than call themselves wonderful and accepting while taking a dump on all the other sites, when they're all just as bad as each other.

Just add 'deviant art' and 'reddit' and you've basically summed up my opinion, OP. It boggles my mind that people condemn such huge websites because some parts are gross or it's not run the way they like.
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

The fact that I use them is WHY I complain about them.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-10 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm on most of those, and I'll complain about them even while I use them.

That is precisely why I complain about them. If I'm not on a site myself and its users/content aren't directly affecting me, I don't care. But if I'm on a site, or its users are directly impacting me/my online activity/my life even though I'm not on it, then yes, I'll complain.

Especially if I'm on that site myself. The reason why I complain about Tumblr so much? It's because I'm there. I have to be there if I want to participate in fandom. The reason why I complain about AO3? Because I use it. The reason why I whinge about LJ? Because I'm on there (if mostly anon these days...)

Why would I complain about them if I weren't using them? :P

Eh. I think we can all agree that YouTube is the biggest shithole though.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think part of it is joking/friendly ribbing. Also a bit of venting. Someone on Tumblr couldn't complain about the crazy SJWs on their blog without getting dogpiled. It's kind of the same here, although anonymity does offer a bit more freedom for expression, there's a chance that you'll still be dogpiled. There are some stubborn, judgmental assholes on here. And even if you're not, it can be kind of hard to have a discussion that isn't an argument.
