i would agree with you if it were da2 or mass effect but...da:o is so tabula rasa about the warden that it seems ridic. even if you have a default name what are the default choices/class/origin/romance etc

you can just go so many ways with the warden, not like the core of personality in shep and hawke, that to be picky ab that is ridic. i just don't read origins fic with a warden in it that isn't my own at all.

I hate, hate, hate it when I read fic from this fandom (or others like it) and people use their own name for the player character. When there is a default name, use it!

Secret because "I can do what I want with my fic and when the game gives you the opportunity to name the character you should be allowed to do it in the fic too." blah, blah, blah

I don't hate it as much as you, but I do not like it. This is completely irrational, I know, but still true.

Same thing for Hawke in DA2 and Shepherd from Mass Effect.

Ehhh, I see your point OP. One of the major things that I dislike about Fallout New Vegas fic is when the writer makes a big deal out of their courier and it reads a lot like a self-insert fic. And that's dumb because that's basically the whole PREMISE of WRPGs, but there's years of fanfic bias there for you.

This is kind of ridiculous. I can kind of see it for Hawke or Shepard, who have their own voices and pretty distinctive personalities and whom get called Hawke and Shepard enough that those feel like their names. Wardens are fucking generic as hell, and giving them a generic name can't change the fact that, outside of a few basic canon characteristics, any given Kallian Tabris is going to be pretty different from other Kallian Tabrises.

Do you also draw the line at which class they are? DO you ESC if their description doesn't match the first preset available? There are so many more things that are vital to characterization, I don't even get why it's an issue, unless you're just really attached to the default names and hate the idea of Alistair or Zevran macking on anyone "else".

This randomly reminds me of the time I played Wind Waker and renamed Link to Bubba. Then I forgot about it and had a hilarious surprise when I picked it back up two years later.

I agree 100%. I have met one Hawke that I could tolerate being called by the character's first name in three years of fandom, and that's only because I knew the person writing that Hawke. I feel the same way about the Warden, but it's so much harder to find the generic names for those that I just about gave up on fic for them entirely.

I ultimately agree. It feels very self-instert-y when someone uses their own choice of name (unless, I guess, if it seems correct for the character's origin). And ESPECIALLY when people make a big effing deal about the name itself. "OH, it symbolizes my snow white hair and powerful ice magic oh ho ho!". I know there's this crazy popular Cullen/Amell fic that goes on and on about how the Warden has a ~boyyyy name~ oh golly!

A lot of the time I can get over it, but there's always that suspicion.

I agree. I don't care about personality or character build differences (unless the character is simpering fool), but the name takes me right out of the fic. I prefer the Warden to be referred to as Warden or Warden-Commander. I'll take Warden Cousland or Warden Amell but once the fic goes into Serefina or something I stop and hit the back button. Rarely do I find a fic interesting enough to just mentally replace the name with the default (or just Warden).

Same goes for Shepard and Hawke. I'd love to do the find/replace but I also feel weird about editing another's story.

Write the fic yourself.

I agree tbh. the only un-default name for Hawke that I'll ever accept is "Mike" and I think we all know why

What if you don't like the default names? I can't think of the Pokémon Black/White player characters and use their default names of "Hilda" and "Hilbert" because I just plain don't like them. It could be the case for others.

Maybe you'd be better off reading fic for fandoms where the players is encouraged to make the character into whatever they want, look like whatever they want, and name them whatever they want.

I feel this way about Shepard and Hawke. It's one thing to have your own first name for them, but if you constantly call them that in fic and now Shepard/Hawke I won't feel like I'm reading about them anymore. Rather an OC.
