09. [SPOILERS for Catching Fire]

I was a bit disappointed too, OP, but I can also understand why they did it. It might have been confusing for non-book fans. But still, it would have been nice to leave it in for those who have read the books.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was cut because it would confuse people. The director said it was cut because it made it too obvious to the audience that Plutarch was on Katniss's side.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Given that I wanted to reach into the book and slap Katniss for not picking up on it, this was probably a wise choice.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
haha, yeah. I could SEMI-understand if she'd just spotted it or something and assumed it was a fashion statement. But he went out of his way to show her something with something she knows has become a symbol of rebellion. *facepalm*

This. It was so incredibly obvious from the start it was just painful the way it completely flew over her head.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
lmao I had the same reaction

OP here

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, Katniss was such a failure at spying 101 in that scene. I was all but on the edge of my seat wondering if Plutarch might be more than he seemed in some way. Gaaah. :|

I saw the movie with no book knowledge and immediately assumed he was on her side from his introduction, then spent the rest of the movie second guessing myself. So I agree, this clock thing sounds like a dead give away.

I actually like that explanation a fair bit, especially since the movie was able to show more of Plutarch's actions than the book. At very least, it's nice to know there was a valid reason for it.

Though I'd have liked it if they used the watch and had him make the hints about midnight I think the way they did it in the movie worked well with how they set Plutarch up as a villain in the movie. If I hadn't read the books I don't think I would have realised that he's on their side.

And those that did know about Plutarch's real objective could enjoy the subtle ways he manipulated Snow.

That's what I think; they wanted to make it seem like Plutarch was against Katniss and have it be a bit of a surprise for the audience who didn't read the books. I think they did a pretty good job of it in the movie, myself.

I've only read the first book but I thought it was pretty obvious after that party scene that he was on her side.

One of the guys I saw it with said the same, but none of the rest (I was the only one who's read the books, though one of them saw the movie for the second time) got it, and as I said, I don't think I would have got it either. I think I would have interpreted his "you inspired me" remarks as threats at first, especially after his talks with Snow.

But that's kind of hard to say in hindsight, as I was already thoroughly spoiled. :P

I misread this as mockingjay cock

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-12-14 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
And that made it so much better.

Also, was anyone else disappointed with how they handled the tributes' interviews? From the books I envisioned the tributes angrier and the audience as much more upset than what they showed in the movie. It felt kind of lacklustre until Katniss' turn, and even then I felt the audience wasn't moved enough by the wedding dress.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
What, Johanna's scenes didn't make it clear enough?

Or the way Gloss and Cashmere were totally giving the subtle middle finger in their interview?

It was still tamer than I thought it would be. Katniss isn't the most emotional narrator, but I still envisioned the interviews as much more emotionally charged than they were in the movies. IIRC the books mentioned the audience weeping even before Katniss came on stage and riots breaking out after. In the books at least the people of the Capitol were actually upset at their victors having to return to the arena, but in the movie the audience sounded more like the audiences in talk-shows reacting to cue prompts rather than genuinely distressed.

Secret 9 - Catching Fire (warning for SPOILERS)

spoilers for Catching Fire

[Picture is Plutarch Heavensbee, as portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, from the movie "Catching Fire". He is a middle-aged man with light hair and olive skin leaning close to a woman facing away from the camera.]

Not Secret: I fanboy Plutarch like crazy. [wide open mouth smile emoticon] I loved every scene he was in.

Secret: I was disappointed when he didn't show Katniss the Mockingjay clock like in the book.

(Picture is relevant.)

afaik the movies didn't really explain the significance of the mockingjay

Me too. I want that watch so badly, and I was hoping they'd make it if it was in the movie. Alas...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. That was what tipped me off in the book that he was secretly fighting against the Capital.

There are just certain things that, when you read the book, you think "Gosh I'd love to see this onscreen." In particularly I'm still sad that in the HP films, we never got Peeves or the Deathday Party.
