What are the stereotypes?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goody. Another secret looking for a pat on the head and reassurance that it's okay to like something.

Here's a cookie *pats head* It'll be over soon.

Secret 1 - Yu-Gi-Oh! (trading card game)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-14 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is four cards from the trading card game "Yu-Gi-Oh!". They are "Ritual Guardian Phelasia", showing a young woman with bright orange hair and wielding a staff with fire, "Black Luster Soldier", showing a warrior in a badass armor, "Ritual Raven" showing a creepy thing with two masks, and "End of the World", showing an hexagon thing beaming down reality warping magic things on a city, destroying it.]

I haven't played this game in years. A recent comment in this community made me feel incredibly nostalgic about it, and want to play it again.

The problem? In the years since I've stopped playing, I've become much more aware of the stereotypes associated with card players, and I really don't want to be associated with that.

you are overthinking this op

just go play card games and have fun and continue on being your cool self

You should stop worrying about what other people will think of you and just have fun and do what makes you happy.

Though...wth, what stereotypes come from playing card games?

Yeah, this. I mean, apart from the "you'll end up like this dude from The Queen of Spades" one.

I laughed so loud my cat bit me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There's not much you can do about that. Sorry. All you can really do is play and defy the stereotypes and have fun doing so.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. It doesn't help that I'm over 25 and every time I go to the comic book store, 13 year olds are playing this game. I miss it.

I'm 23 and I play regularly with over a dozen people who are my age (give or take a couple years)

there are a couple people my parents' age who play at my locals sometimes

Going to skip the patrionizing BS

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because I am well aware of the stereotypes, seeing as many of my friends are dedicated card players, and some of them do unfortunately live up to the stereotypes. And I'm also well-aware of how much people's opinions of you actually mean, even if we wish it were just so easy to ignore them and do what we want.

I say go ahead and play, and do so not in the "enjoy it and fuck what other people think" way, but in the "enjoy it and challenge the stereotypes" way. Same physical action, different attitude, and attitude can be all the importance. And if/when people you know try to make fun of you for it, just stand up to those stereotypes and challenge them. If it's random passer-bys? Just roll your eyes at them and ignore them like they're beneath (aka do to them what they are doing to you). A pain in the ass, but at least it allows you to hold your ground.

And if you end up in a situation where you're a grown-ass adult playing with a bunch of kids? Just be their mentor, one way or another.

I agree with all of this...

And if you end up in a situation where you're a grown-ass adult playing with a bunch of kids? Just be their mentor, one way or another.

This, to me, is the most important part of what you've said. I worked at a game store where card tourneys were held, and Yu-Gi-Oh always turned into a certain group of asshole adults gleefully defeating little kids and rubbing their faces in it. We had to ban the game from being played on the premises because it was making the store look so bad.

Be kind to your fellow players, and gracious in both victory and defeat, and you'll go pretty far in proving those stereotypes wrong.

Quite frankly, anyone who takes pleasure in victory over little kids or newbies to a game is just an overgrown child themself. Sorry to hear you guys had to ban the game due to those douchebags.

i used to play yugioh all the time when i was younger. whatever, it was fun. but yeah i didn't want to be associated with the stereotypical card players either so i stopped playing/was secretive about it.

but when i got into high school and even here in college, grown ass people are playing magic and yugioh and what the hell ever. nobody actually cares. ive seen grown marines yelling about magic. ive seen people playing yugioh at house parties. my roommate is the biggest party girl i know and she's got a full magic deck. honestly, i think people care less than you think, and those that do care really aren't worth the time because they're not all that common, in my experience. just do what you like.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing the stereotypes involve adults who play in tournaments with kids? I know of someone like that with the Pokemon TCG. It's a little strange, yeah.

However, my boyfriend and his friends play Yugioh amongst themselves just for fun, and I don't think that's a problem. So relax and enjoy your card games, anon. Unless you're hoping to defeat a 10-year-old at a children's card game, then you might want to rethink your hobbies.

YGOTCG secret! oh maaaaaaan, I am so sad that I'm late to this thread!

OP, I am a huge YGO player. It's one of my favorite things. I play online almost daily and with people at least once a week, and I have a lot of friends who play.

I'm 23 and a fifth-year in college. I started playing (more than just like, a few times a year with my old cards) about five or six years ago, and haven't stopped since. I play both casually and competitively. And honestly? Fuck the stereotypes, and fuck anyone who thinks they matter.

Actually I'm curious as to what the stereotypes are that you see. I haven't really heard very many, and the group that I play with (at my university - we're a campus club) is fairly diverse, and most of us are super chill and genuinely nice people.

If you want to get back into the game but don't want to spend money on it right away, get YGOPRO. You can download Dawn of a New Era at tdoane.com. That's one of the programs that runs it. You can access all cards (they update their databases every few weeks or so to catch up with new card releases) and build/save decks and play with people online. There are a few other programs as well that do the same thing - Devpro (in my opinion the best one, but it stopped working on my comp sadly) and PercyPro. And if you're looking for someone to play with just message me :)

Another option that's faster is duelingnetwork.com, but...don't go there unless you're feeling masochistic. It doesn't require a download, but...too many people there are assholes, the administration kind of sucks, and all the play is manual rather than automated. I gave it up months ago.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well if you'd rather not play a game you enjoy because you care more about what 'the world in general' might think of you than whether you're having fun doing things you actually like then that's your perogative.
