Book recs thread

We've had a few fanfic rec threads in the past, so here's one for books. :)

Everyone should read Jerome K. Jerome. I was astonished to see how underappreciated he is; his humour is pure gold, and bits from Three Men in a Boat never fail to cheer me up.

On a related note (apparently I'm in love with happy!literature right now), Pushkin is one of the few rare poets who can combine loftiness with a good, healthy, non-forced sense of humour. His works (both poetry and prose) are easy to read, and (in case of poetry) have catchy, fun metrical/rhyme structure.

Also, I wrote a whole page dedicated to different books dealing with the Sherlock Holmes backstory: http://thedarkbeginnings.tumblr.com/recs
for, as folks here might know, I'm in love with everything Holmesian.

The Mask of Apollo by Fred Saberhagen

Enjoyed it when I was young, I think. Rereading now.

So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane. I enjoyed this more than Harry Potter >_>;

In light of all the talk about Frozen - The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge.

The book isn't new, but it's a really fascinating sci-fi take on the original Snow Queen tale, that reimagines many of the aspects of the original in the new setting, fleshes them out, and gives it the author's own personal twist. Excellent worldbuilding and characterization, as well.

I'm half-way through Free Souls, the third book in Susan Kaye Quinn's Mindjack trilogy, and really enjoying it. It's set in a future where almost everyone can read minds, and those who can't are social outcasts called "zeros." Kira thinks she's the queen zero, but soon finds that she is actually a mindjacker (yeah, I giggled at that term, too) who can control other people's thoughts and behaviors at whim. And everything goes to shit for her from there. She's kind of a stupid protagonist, but in an endearing sort of way, and there's lots of action, suspense, high stakes and cool world-building. The first book, Open Minds, can be found for free on the author's website: http://www.mindjacktrilogy.com/

No One Belongs Here More Than You, short stories by Miranda July. Sometimes short stories are all you have the energy to commit to, you know?

Un Lun Dun by China Mieville

It never goes the cliche route, it's full of amazing imagery and wordplay, and the whole thing is just FUN and wild and intriguing. I think it's technically YA but whatever, this book is amazing.

Once "Ready Player One" actually gets into its story instead of just name-dropping this history gaming, it's a really good story. Also, "Alas, Babylon" is good if you want an idealistic version of a town surviving post nuclear war.
