I think Matt's a talented actor, but the writing for Eleven was SO bad. I guess I'll never know if I would have loved him under a different writer.

Saaaaaaaaaaame. I honestly think it rivals what they did to Colin Baker. Only that time, it was intentional. This time....IDK, man, I'm no kind of tinfoil-hat-wearer, but I had serious flashbacks to the '80s with how bad it was for Eleven.

I'm thinking, even with a smidge more plot, and jot more pacing (as in, slower, not breakneck), it could have been watchable. As it was, it was just all over a hot mess. At least it was popular, and Smith won't have to be disappointed, the way Colin Baker was? I am trying to find the good in this sitch, really I am.

The fact Moffat has basically retconned the whole canon (and has likely already forgotten he's done so) just highlights the fact that someone needs to sit him down, force-feed him enough tranquilizers to get him to sit still for longer than ten seconds (and to get his clearly ADHD brain to focus), marathon all but the last season of Babylon Five for him (except Sleeping in Light, that absolutely must be watched), then say to him, "YOU SEE?? THIS! THIS! THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE SCIENCE FICTION."

Me too. I think Matt's fine and I might have liked him, but I couldn't do Eleven's writing.

Gotta say I agree, OP. I dislike the show under Moffatt and think that Eleven could have been more interesting under a different writer. Oh well.

I just hope Twelve eventually gets the chance.

I could not agree more.

I like that writer's standalone episodes for previous Doctors, but jesus wept, he cannot write an over-arcing plotline to save his life.

Secret 2 - Doctor Who

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a promotional image of the Eleventh Doctor, as portrayed by the actor Matt Smith, from the TV series "Doctor Who". He is a man with light skin and short dark hair combed to cover part of his forehead. He is wearing a tweed suit with a red bowtie.]

The biggest reason I'm sad he's leaving is because it means we won't get to see Matt's Doctor under a different show runner. I really dislike a lot of Moffatt's stuff and the general direction the show has taken under him. But on the other hand, I love Matt's portrayal. He's the one reason I've kept watching. I think he could have been my favorite Doctor under a different showrunner.

Secret because: Usually people either hate everything about Moffat's time including Matt or love everything (or almost everything).

I totally agree. I adored Eleven in principle, adored so, so, so many things about him, and would have adored watching him if his character and story arc wasn't analogous to a minefield where I never knew when I would blindly stumble into a sudden jarring buttload of Moffat-douchery that would suddenly erupt out of nowhere. :(

Same. I was so bummed when I heard that Smith was leaving and Moffat wasn't.

And this also means Moffat gets to put his gross hands all over another Doctor...

Are you secretly me, OP? Or did I post this in my sleep?

But yeah, you are DEFINITELY not alone. I found Matt so damn charming and am just so sad that he's collateral damage to Moffat's shitty writing.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I love Matt, too. He is My Doctor. I'm sad to see him go.

Same. I will be forever sad not to have seen Matt as the doctor with Davies running the show.

I guess I agree, OP. Last year's Christmas special punctured my enthusiasm and for reasons I just can't articulate my interest deflated almost overnight.

(I like Jenna as as actress -- when I've seen her interviewed she's been adorable -- but there's something about Clara that puts my teeth on edge and I haven't been able to get past it.

(I admit I do still love most of the 11+Ponds eps, but I'm not generally of the Oh Boo Its New I Hate I camp.)

IA. This is also my opinion of John Watson in BBC Sherlock -- he's so close to being awesome and lovable, but the Moffatness...oh the Moffatness, it's always hanging around and tainting everything.

I get you on that. I tended to really love Moffat's characters, but not necessarily love what he did with them. I feel like he's one of those writers who has great ideas, but then really needs to give those ideas to somebody else and go away until they're done.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I love the way he plays the Doctor, and I have enjoyed him in everything else I have seen him in. At this point, I just hope he goes on to have a successful and fulfilling career.

When watching "The Angels Take Manhattan" way back whenever that aired, my main thought was, "Here are four actors who are far too talented for the material they are being given." Would have loved to see all of them under a different show runner.

Eh. Matt's Doctor was cute and whimsical, but couldn't be close to my favorite with or without Moffat. So excited for Capaldi though. As a proper old school fan, I think he can have more direct input on the show's writing and the character of the Doctor. And I'll be even more excited if Moffat leaves sometime during his tenure.

Agreed. I was hoping the same. I really loved his introduction episode, so I was hoping there'd be more of that.

No I totally agree, there's a few things I like from Moffat's run but I hated most of it, still Smith was really enjoyable and saved the day.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe there'll be another writer for the sixtieth anniversary? Then we might see Eleven w/o Moffat.

God, agreed. Eleven is one of my favourites when he's not being written by Moffat - aside from The Eleventh Hour and The Big Bang, which I enjoyed the hell out of, my favourite episodes of his run were Amy's Choice, Vincent and the Doctor, The Lodger/Closing Time, The Doctor's Wife, The Girl Who Waited, and The Power of Three, and I loved Pond Life and P.S. NONE of those are Moffat episodes.

Same with Amy, Rory, and River (or, at least, River before her backstory imploded messily all over the place - seriously, Moffat, how do you write a character that starts out so awesome and ends up so... issues-y?).

Well, I'm sorry you (and everyone else in this thread, good grief) feel that way.

Me, I've loved every second of Matt, including all of Moff's writing--I've never understood the dislike for it, and never will. I am going to be a ball of tears after the Christmas episode. Even though I'm looking forward to Capaldi.

This is how I felt about Ten.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to agree. Similar to David Tennant leaving with Russell T. Davies. It didn't let us see how much of the character was the showrunner, and let the actor get out from under that.

I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, and maybe it makes sense to do it this way, but...

...wow, a lot of the episodes have been bad for a while, really.
