So many Moran secrets! I can't wait for Sherlock to air, there will be so many secrets for that.

And yes, my favorite part of the Moran/Moriarty dynamic is how they mirror Holmes/Watson. Now if only there was more fic that didn't involve BDSM elements...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about fanon!BBC!"Moran", or are you actually familiar with canon or non-BBC adaptations? Because there's plenty of non-BDSM stuff in other sectors of fandom, which generally have a less cray-cray/inhuman Moriarty.

This is just a theory, but I think all the BDSM stuff is because BBC!Moran doesn't exist yet, so he's more of a hodge-podge of writers inventing an OC that will serve the purposes of the kind of smut they want to write about BBC!Moriarty. A bit like people inventing the nature of the Clint/Coulson relationship in Avengers. ;)

On Ao3, searching for under the Moran/Moriarty tag there isn't a whole lot of fic. And a lot of it with sex has some BDSM elements (which is a squick of mine). Searching using the pairing tag doesn't really differentiate between BBC/Granada/Doyle fandoms. Though, I do think the majority is BBC? I am not sure.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, BBC!Moran doesn't exist yet? No wonder I have no fucking idea what people are talking about when that name comes up!

Thank you, anon, you have solved a sourced of much confusion for me. I thought I had a weirdly specific memory thing happening or something.

People think that the sniper doing the laser-pointing at John at the climax of The Great Game was a reference to him (I wouldn't be surprised if it was, given how many nods to canon there are in the show), but that's the extent of his existence so far. ;)

Everything I've seen about series 3 makes it look like they go even further away from ACD canon. Maybe it's better not to get too excited about Moran.

What ARE the major rumors/spoilers about season 3 that you've seen? I haven't been following any of the buildup and I'm not planning to watch as it comes out, but I'm planning on keeping an eye out in case something grabs my interest...

thewalkingassbutt.tumblr.com/ was posting vague spoilers from the screening and answering more detailed questions privately. Now fuck-your-fanart.tumblr.com has been spamming the Sherlock tags with the answers to those questions, so if you want to spend time reading spoilers, that's where you'll find them.

It seems "The Empty Hearse" will be more action-orientated, Sherlock vs terrorists, instead of Sherlock being clever and solving cases.

Yeah, I've seen the same. No spoilers, but they drop enough hints for those of us who liked A Study in Pink, they've torpedoed all that, and are basically making pastiches of the Rathbone pastiches (which were soul-suckingly stupid in and of themselves.)

All I've heard so far is "nods to the Canon." Yeah. NODS to the Canon. Which is shorthand for "We'll name-drop a title or two, but get on with the insane slapstick the insane teenaged fans want to see instead." Plus, the synopsis for one of them? "Sherlock has to give a speech at John's wedding." (This was given in a "spoiler-free" review, so I gather it's probably one of the B/C/D/E/F/G plots Moffat is so fond of introducing, then abandoning, like a speed freak with ADHD. Yeah, yeah, Gatiss wrote the first ep. Don't tell me Moffat doesn't have his sticky little paws all over it too.)

Then there's the whole thing the fandom's devolved into. (Death threats for Freeman's wife? Seriously? Time was, the woman was fandom's darling.) You know it's bad, when the fandom made it onto one of the work-related blogs I follow. (UK journalist made them read slashfic at the premiere. The author of the abomination was horrified, and I guess fandom is now calling for the girl's head. I say the fans got exactly what they had coming to them.)

GREAT BIG NO thank you. To all of it. Feh. *spit*

Oh, and this is what I recall reading: The brother of the guy who plays Hannibal is Moran, John gets married (assuming to Mary Morstan) in one of the eps, and the character is played by Freeman's real-life wife, and there's a plotline that seems to be identical to the whole Moriarty thing, only it's with Moran instead.

This. So very hot. I'm not into Sherlock at all, but I'm drooling over that art.

The guy with the gun may not be blond, but damn does he remind me of Niels.

Secret 11 - Sherlock (BBC TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-18 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a drawing, credited to "paisley", of a naked man doing up the tie of another man, who is smiling smugly and holding a gun to the naked man's stomach. Naked man has olive skin, short but fluffy brown hair, a tattoo of a tiger on the left forearm and scratches on the back and human bites on the neck and hip. He looks grim. Smug-weapon man has light skin, short black hair combed neatly and is wearing a long-sleeved white shirt, a golden bow (currently being tied), gray pants/trousers and a brown belt. (There are the faded words "A MORIARTY/MORAN FST" below the picture.]

If Moran, with appropriate queerbait-y John parallels where he wildly adored Moriarty, is not a villain in season 3, I will be inconsolable. I know there hasn't been any info about it, but Moffat is a trolling liar so I won't give up.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, shit. This just reminds me that when season 3 of Sherlock comes out, the wave of fanfic and fanart will make it impossible to navigate Sherlock Holmes fandom without having to sift through tons of BBC to get to any canon or other adaptations. It's already hard enough as it is, what with BBC fans constantly tagging everything with canon tags.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
This show killed the Sherlock Holmes fandom on LJ. Cox & Co was my personal favorite but really all the comms went to shit once they allowed people to crosspost their BBC Sherlock stuff. The BBC Sherlock fandom was huge from the outset and there was no reason not to let them stay in their own comms instead of overtaking the good ones.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I don't mind the BBC fandom, but I hate how it's not properly contained categorized as an adaptation that is distinct from ACD canon (or Granada, or Ritchie, or Russian). Hell, on AO3 people constantly, constantly tag BBC fics with both "Sherlock (TV)" and "Sherlock Holmes - ACD". In spite of the fact that there's a whole other tag called "Sherlock Holmes and Related Fandoms" that they could unite their Holmes-related stuff under.

It honestly wouldn't be so bad, if the majority of them would actually READ THE BOOKS. But I guess that's too taxing for their poor little brains. And some of them are outright proud of the fact they've never read the Canon. That's the attitude that gets MY goat.

Mistagging is certainly an issue, but I for one intend to run another round of acd_holmesfest on Livejournal in the Spring - only ACD canon fanworks permitted. So there will be at least one haven.

I don't care either way, but then again I don't read fic centered around Moriarty or Moran unless John or Sherlock are also heavily featured. Even then there's so much Moriarty/Moran in fandom so I've just gotten used to it. Whatever the show does with him (or doesn't) will be okay with me.

Wow. That fanart. I like. Even though IDGAF about the BBC versions of these characters (well, BBC!Moran doesn't even exist yet anyway...but I might watch the next season if they decided to write him in.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
The brother of the guy who plays Hannibal is Moran. If that helps. The plotline (such as it is) will be a rehash of Moriarty's.

SPOILERS FOR THE EMPTY HEARSE

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no Moran.

Except when we see a couple of eyes at the end which might be Moran. But I think they're more likely Magnussen.
