The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
If you frequent tumblr, you've probably heard about the interview PD gave where he said CN cancels shows if they have too many female viewers. (Young Justice, Tower Prep, Green Lantern, and so on) Tumblr has taken to writing a petition for CN to stop ignoring their female fanbase and stop solely marketing to little boys. I...think this is entirely pointless.

In a perfect world shows would be about making great products, and not strictly about making money. But that's not how the world works, and CN is only interested in sales. That's why Johnny Test reruns dominate the network. Do I think it's stupid and sexist as hell? Yes. Do I honestly believe CN will change their ways and take chances with marketing towards a female audience? Not a chance.

Your thoughts?

I don't expect it to change much but I think it's fair to point out that their assumption that girls don't buy as many toys as boys is untrue.

No it's pretty accurate, in the sense girls don't tend to buy THAT kind of toy. However, instead of adjusting their products/marketing to the audience they have (Hasbro, say what you will, does this very, very well with MLP), their response is to try to hammer something into the mold they know.

But they kinda do? I mean it's not like girls haven't been playing with action figures since the days of Thundercats (and probably further back).

When I was a little girl, the toys I wanted were things like my little pony figures, sky dancers, polly pockets, beanie babies, dolls, etc. I had a ton of Sailor Moon clothing/toys, too. I had a plastic moon wand, of all things, lol. As for cheap action figures, eh.

I was like 18 when the Atla action figures came out but I know that if I'd been five and watching that show, and they had made Katara and all the other girls, I would have been begging for them for Christmas.

Let me clarify

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-12-18 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Avatar was a particularly good example of not marketing correctly. Namely in that when girls are half your cast and often somebody's favorite, not making any toys of them leaves you pretty fucked.

And it's not that girls don't exist, but it is true that they traditionally buy less "action figures". Though in this case it goes beyond that cause, hey, if the season 2 villain is a girl... if one of the main protagonists is a girl, you should make a toy of them even if your selling to boys, yes?

I would like to hear those execs say that to the parent of a young girl. I know they have not done so yet, because the entire planet would have been deafened by the derisive laughter.

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
They don't think girls buy the toys they want to make, poorly made action figures and tops. Adventure Time sells clothing, accessories, plush toys, etc. It's a shame they don't want to branch out for any of their other shows.

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
They're probably right that even if girls want those toys, too many parents will refuse to buy them because they're "for boys."

It depends on the type of toy. Girls (or their parents) might be a little less inclined to buy action figures but they'd go crazy over plush toys. I think girls (and boys) would LOVE to have plush toys of their favorite characters.

I appreciate the concern and I fully agree with what they're doing, but CN has consistently been complete fuckheads in regards of action cartoons in general so they won't listen to a damn thing. That interview also sounded like Paul has had enough of the ethic of CN interestingly.

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think its short sighted and stupid. Marketing to children is pretty damn easy, and if they'd get over the idea of "only boys buy toys" and realize that no, boys buy toys currently because you are marketing your toys and show for boys so you are creating your own 'logic'. It's stupid because they could be marketing to both and raking in the profits. Why cut out half of a demographic?

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Because they don't want to make stuff that girls usually buy. Clothing, plushies, accessories, dolls, etc.

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
But see that's bullshit because girls don't just buy those things. Girls buy action figures. Girls play with action figures. Saying that oh no girls only buy "these" things is stupid and more importantly not true.

Did marketing completely forget the 80s and how many girls had She-Ra action figures? Or Thundercats? Or TMNTs? Or more currently: Pokemon?

Pretty much from the sounds of it.

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
But the question isn't whether girls buy those action figures; the question is whether an economically significant number of girls buy those action figures. And CN's answer to that question is clearly no.

I think they're mostly likely wrong, fwiw - I think that girls do buy action figures if you make the right ones and don't market them stupidly, and I think it's really dumb to focus on those kinds of toys and not think about branching out of merchandise. But, I mean, they have the statistics, and they know their financial position, and we don't. Maybe they're being total dumbasses. IDK.

On average they don't sell as many of those things to girls, no. Pokémon was also a gender neutral show, with cute and noncute creatures alike. Plus, most of the action figures are of the male characters. I've heard things like Batgirl, catwoman, wonderwoman, etc, are in demand, but not enough to make them see enough profit in it I guess.

I WATCHED Batman, superman, Might Max, etc, as a kid, but I never wanted their toys.

MTE. (My niece loves my action figures.)

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

That's bullshit. First of all because if you actually are decent at PR you can get anyone to buy anything. They are just not even trying. Second, girls buy that shit because that is what is marketed towards girls. Third, they make clothing and plushies for boys already. Walk through any Target or WalMart or any general store like that and you will see all sorts of marketed clothing in the boys section. So that's just an all around bullshit excuse.

....so if the fanbase is only girls they're somehow making less money? I don't really get the decision tbh. Stupid, sexist and very stupid.

They canceled Young Justice because the merch wasn't selling, and they blamed it on the female audience. (Since most of their viewers were girls/women) But yes, it's sexist as hell.
