I don't care. It was a stupid joke that has no affect on the real world. At all.

Do I think Freeman is a rapist? No, and anyone who does based on this joke is an idiot.

Do I think someone is going to hear that joke and rape someone? No. And honestly, more people have probably seen it on Tumblr than on the actual show it was on (less than 6 million people in Denmark).

Do I think it was a stupid joke? Yes, it wasn't even funny.

I don't think Martin Freeman is a terrible person. I think he is someone who can put his foot in his mouth because he doesn't think about something before he says it.

Has not EFFECT. Affect is a verb, you can remember it by the a standing for "action".

BAH! I said it out loud too. I hate affect/effect. I am going to make a change.org petition to replace them both with the offect, which can be used interchangeably.

I used to hate them, too, but then I spent some time in Magic: the Gathering gaming fandom and the repeated exposure to 'not affected by spells or effects' cured me of it.

(but actually, that's very interesting as a way to use them in a specific and repetitive context - I'll have to go ask my magic playing friends if they noticed this!)

How I learned the difference: Action. Affect is the action, effect is the result. So for example, you could say, "People's actions affect others", because the focus of the sentence is on the actions affecting others. Whereas if you changed the sentence to, "Actions can have an effect on other people", the focus is on the result, not the cause. Does this make sense?

Actually, let me take your own example. In it, the focus is on the result, so it has no effect on the real world. However, if you changed it to, "This stupid joke doesn't affect the real world", it would be correct, because your focus is on the action of the stupid joke. That help?

It's not 100% perfect but it's been very helpful to me to figure out when to use the right word. (There are instances where either word could technically be correct, and really, at that point, just go with the focus of the sentence.)

Affect is also a noun but when used as a noun, yeah, it's not the meaning that was intended here.

Bonus: Joke = Literal rapist

The description on the guy's blog is enough to make me stop taking any comment they may make seriously. That's a joke in serious bad taste, but rape joke to literal rapist is one hell of a leap.

Meh could be worse. One person said, "Clearly, Martin is not the guy who would walk with drugs, put them in drinks and rape people but you know what is worst? He joked about it, like is something funny or normal to joke about." You know what is worse than a rapist? Joking about it. Yes, a joke about rape is worse than actually being raped. Someone in the world actually believes this. :|

Well...couldn't you say that about any rape joke? The fact that people continue to make rape jokes desensitizes people to sexual assault. That does have an effect on the real world. People have a right to be offended by Freeman.

In any case, I don't care that much because I'm not all that surprised. He doesn't strike me as a particularly smart person.

No, I don't really think so. This is the same argument as, "Do video games cause people to be violent?" And nearly all of Tumblr (and the internet) says, "NO!" So if you say that video games don't cause violence (or desensitize people to violence) but rape jokes will somehow desensitize people and cause them to rape, then you need to change one of those opinions.

I don't know, I think that's a false comparison. I think when it comes to rape jokes, and particularly to the date rape kind he made, it works to back up people who don't take date rape seriously. The "joke" was that it wasn't really rape, which is something people actually believe. Making light of it and having a well known figure talk like that does back people up and does have a real world effect.

I don't think he's a rapist or anything, but I do think public figures have real world effects on topics.

I just don't think that Martin Freeman (a person not actually recognizable by most people except as "Oh that dude who played that hobbit), is even a well known figure. And I don't really think a (shitty) joke is going to be the turning point for anyone on whether date rape is bad or not. Either they believe it is already, or they don't (or some murky in between).

I actually think the answer to both those questions is a lot more complicated than just a flat yes or no. A lot of things both influence and reflect behavior and the attitudes toward violence and sexual violence in particular. I wish we could look at it without people shouting it down immediately or immediately taking their own simplified interpretation and forcing it on everyone.
