It is, indeed, regrettable - though understandable - that the size difference is that much of a concern to these authors (apparently? It's not like I read any Thorin/OFC fic), but I feel like it would be Thorin who would have a major problem with being the shorter party. Even the film!version; as to the character from the book canon, I cannot so much as imagine him being in a relationship with somebody significantly taller than him, let alone of another race. He has such an exaggerated sense of pride.

This

I don't think he's be involved with anyone at all except another dwarf.

He'd probably think he is the right height, too.

What is the issue with being a dwarf OFC anyway? Is it because they're not "pretty" compared to elves or humans? Actually, I think I already know the answer to that.

I mean people are free to write what they want to write but it seems to me that if authors want Thorin to be tallest of the two (and ignore the fact he would generally be shorter than an elf or human), it would cut out a lot of the awkward "she was very short for an elf" stuff if they just made their OFC a dwarf.

Would most women be taller than him? If they were human and elves definitely, but I don't really see dwarves or hobbits being taller than him that often.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of these fics, though, involve OFCs who are human or elves.

I agree. It doesn't bug me so much in kink memes, because people have the kinks they have, and while I like short guys, that seems a rarity. In longer fics, though, it bugs me more. And too often the idea that the man always has to be taller gets stuck together with gender norms and the assumption that of course he'd be the dominant one.

Then again, my preferences seem a rarity.

*morns the lack of dominant!Bilbo/Submissive!Thorin*

All I can say is that hetero women who don't like short guys are missing out, but, you know, MORE FOR ME!

God, that's a good picture of him...

Anyway, yes, I get this. I don't read Thorin/OFC but if I did I would share in your feelings, I think. Maybe part of it is just that I find height differences hot, but I can see why Thorin being as tall (or taller) as his partner (if that partner is a human or elf) would take you out of the fic.

That's why dwarf romances in Dragon Age made me happy. No one magically shrunk for the other half of their partnership.

Yes! I loved the dwarf romance in Dragon Age. The height difference was adorable and a nice change. (I romanced Alistair, and seeing him bend down on his knee to kiss the warden was the absolute best.)

Secret 7 - Thorin Oakenshield (character), The Hobbit (films)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-22 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Thorin Oakenshield, as portrayed by Richard Armitage, from the film series "The Hobbit". He is a man with light olive skin and long dark hair, a beard and mustache. He is standing in a room next to a candle.]

Whenever I see Thorin/Original Female Character fanfic mentioning the non-Dwarf Original Female Character is "small in stature/small for the race of Men/smaller than Thorin" or a Hobbit (and MOST Thorin/Original Female Character is like that, not to mention full of self-inserts, but that's another story), I can't help but hink the author doesn't like short men in general or, at least, their men being shorter than women.

Is it really so hard to get over the fact that most women would be taller than Thorin? I don't understand why people are so bothered by the size difference and the reversal. There are lots of interesting things you could do with it (not just smut-wise). If only writers used their imagination! I just find it a lost opportunity.

It reminds me of comments from last year when fangirls would go: "Oh, I fantasize about Thorin all the time BUT in my mind he's not short, he's as tall as Richard Armitage LOL!" Are you shipping yourself with Thorin or the actor?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! How DARE someone have personal preferences? Quickly! Someone call the judgement police!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's more that people's personal preferences lead them to doing weird things to the canon in order to suit them. You think it would just be easier for those fans to find something that already suits their preferences.

I've always thought that the short'n'stocky build was one of the specific things about the "Hobbit" dwarves, I really don't get people who seem to be all about the hot dwarf lovin' but can't handle the fact that the hot lovin' dwarf in question is gonna be like 5'1".
darkmanifest: (Default)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2013-12-22 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't they be even shorter than that? Like 4'5" or something, since I've known some 5'1 guys and it doesn't seem short enough to differentiate dwarves from humans...especially in a medieval fantasy analogue where average human height would ostensibly be much smaller than it is today.

Of course Thorin would want to romance someone smaller than him. Specifically, smaller and rounder and able to fit in his hand. And her name must be Arkenstone.

Whenever I think about a very short, muscular guy romancing a taller woman, I get the mental image of her smushing her boobs to his head every time she bends down to hug him and it delights me (and I imagine delights him, too).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh it does. I actually have a much taller friend (I'm 5'2" she's 5'9") and she does that intentionally every time she sees me.

Yeah, it kind of surprises me how... sensitive (I guess? I don't have a good word for this) people are about height and height differences. But then, I'm a tall woman and most men are my height or shorter than me anyway, so maybe that has something to do with it...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a woman who *particularly* likes short men. It's not quite a fetish, but it's something I like very much.

I also think it's totally ludicrous when people refer to a man who is 5'8" or 5'9" as "short." Guess what, that's actually *average.*

You can't complain about women being held to unrealistic beauty standards and then say you'd never date a guy who was under 6 feet.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I just looked up average heights for countries across the world, and guess what, for places with mostly Caucasian men, you are totally right. I'm a Caucasian woman who's not particularly tall but is 5 foot 8.5 inches, though I don't date men and I never actually noticed I was nearly on par with men! Always thought I was shorter than most. Of course, I am the bent-back dwarf of my family of giants. When I have travelled in Asia, I do seem to be taller than most men however, so I guess that average does depend on racial grouping somewhat.

Well I don't read fics that ship Thorin with OFCs. The only fic I have read that did, she was already dead, and was a Dwarf, so even when she was alive there likely was not any issues of her being taller than him.

Also, I believe Thorin is quite tall for a Dwarf.

But in general... yeah, I have to wonder what is going on with people who feel they have to make their tall-race OFC short for Thorin. Why can't they just have that Thorin secretly loves having a tall girlfriend?

But this is coming from someone who RPs two couples where I play the half of each relationship that is the tall one (one of which is only tall in spirit). I really don't think either of their partners minds a jot, but then neither Dwarf is Thorin (even if one is Thorin's son).

See, if I shipped myself/Thorin I'd still be freaking shorter than him, because from what I've heard movie!Thorin is 5'2" and I'm 5' tops.

(This is a subject of endless amusement to my friends.)
