You may notice that I have many gripes about shipping

[personal profile] blunderbuss 2013-12-23 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
1. Attaching an agenda to a ship so that it's not just the only right choice, but the right MORAL CHOICE. Nowdays this is SJWs who declare that certain ships are heralds for feminism or LGBT rights, but even a decade ago people would use concepts like equality, emancipation, freedom, tolerance, and so forth to make their ship the only one that decent people could ship.

For example, one of the most common ships in my old fandom had a princess in it, and people said that shipping that validated dictatorial goverments and would be giving the character your endorsement to wield said power. If people shipped the guy with this ordinary non-noble girl then they would be supporting the rule of the common people. So not only would they attack you for liking your ship, but also what they considered to be your political beliefs, and would call you a bad PERSON for obviously not standing by their chosen agenda.

2. Hating the mere existence of any ship that couldn't work in canon. Now, this does have some sense to it, because there are some ships that would never work unless you did a darkfic or a major AU. But fanfic is all about exploring new ideas just for the fun of it, like crackships or AUships or poly relationships or whatever, but no matter how much work you put into it in order to make it work these people will never accept it.

"You can't ship A with B, A's married to C."
"I know that, that's why I wrote this AU where A met C first."
"They're MARRIED."
"Not in this fic."
"You can't split up a perfectly good marriage just to justify your stupid ship!"
"What part of 'AU' and 'fanfic' are you not getting here?"

3. The sheer inability to NOT bash one segment of a love triangle. It's apparently impossible to like all three characters but just have a preference; there is only one acceptable ship because the Other Girl/Guy is clearly a stupid doucheface and you're an idiot for liking them.

For fun, I once shipped two girls of a love triangle together and HOLY CRAP did I not expect the backlash. Some people are so used to pitting two characters against each other that the idea of them liking each other or even being in a relationship just blows their minds.

4. Massively hostility to the idea that the 'maybe they like each other maybe they don't' pairing really might just be friends. For a while there it seemed like Roy and Riza from the FMA manga really just were good comrades and friends, but the fans caught onto any minor scrap of affection they could find and turned it into 100% obvious proof that they were in love and you were stupid to not see it. When it was eventually made canon their sheer smugness was revolting.

5. Not understanding the idea that some people can love more than one person over a lifetime, even if the characters are immortal or otherwise long-living. Apparently if you have one ship you ship them for that character's whole life.

6. The idea that one character 'deserves' another character above all others. That's not how relationships work, but you try telling that to fans who think that only a goddess could ever be allowed to fuck their beloved bishounen.

I agree with basically everything, but especially the love triangle business. On the other hand, many series with love triangles have one of them be an insufferable jerk, so I wouldn't say canons are often good about that either.
That's why I just mostly hate love triangles in general.

I know! 99% of the time the person in the middle of the triangle is an insufferable jerk, mostly because they're the ones stringing this fiasco along by being unable to choose. But do fans ever pick on them? Noooo, especially if they're a dude. He could treat them both like crap but fans will still hate one of the girls for being the 'cause' of all the trouble.

Augh, yes. Though more of the triangles I've personally encountered have been boy>girl<boy, but then what always happens is that one of the guys is a jerk and one is sweet and she ALWAYS picks the jerk. I swear I don't get it. The only love triangle I didn't hate was in Macross Frontier (ignoring the movies, they don't exist). I was astonished that for once, it was clear that the guy was truly torn between the two of them, and each girl "completed" him in a different way, while at the same time, both of the girls were excellent characters in their own right, and neither one was vilified or turned into a shrew for the sake of drama. I also found the guy to be relatively sympathetic, unlike usually where, like you say, they just come off as jerks.

I've not seen the movies yet myself, so would you mind telling me why you didnt like them?

For one, I don't remember that they particularly added much to the plot. But I especially didn't like that (unlike the anime) they resolved the love triangle. Personally, I really liked the lack of resolution in the anime, because it underscored that a) there was a plot outside the romance, and b) Alto truly did care for both of the girls, and was simply too screwed up emotionally to really be able to make an intelligent decision yet.

IDK I mainly felt that they added nothing. I'd rewatch the series, but I wouldn't bother with the movies.

I rather did like the rather open ending of the television series, though it was obvious Sheryl was going to win the love triangle. It was obvious when she and Alto were heavily implied to have had sex in one of later episodes. That and she's super popular. I really wished they'd gone for a threesome end or a Ranka/Sheryl end but that's just wishful thinking on my part. Might give tge series a rewatch then and ignore the movies.

Agreed! I just loved the ambiguity we were left with, especially since I loved both Ranka and Sheryl. It was just nice to be free to imagine the continuation, even if like you say it was heavily implied that he would go for Sheryl. I just thought it fit his character better, too.

Happy watching ^^

I used to joke that Alto chose the sky over Ranka and Sheryl, because seriously, he totally did. And it fit his character so well. Alto/Sky was clearly the winner in the television series. I love both of them to bits as well and that's another reason I liked the ambiguity. That way there were no broken hearts.

Thanks!

Yes! And it's so rare that I actually like all "angles" of a love triangle, too. The thought of one of them getting their heart broken just makes me sad.

I can get behind your Alto/sky headcanon XD

Ditto!! I'm the same way. My headcanon is that while Alto was busy being in awe of the sky, Ranka and Sheryl were totally making out behind him. I'm only half-joking. I always thought Ranka had a crush on Sheryl.

Oh yes. I don't care if someone ships Destiel. I do roll my eyes when people claim that Destiel is an important part of bisexual activism and representation these days.

*cough*Ifthey don't make them gay/ you don't ship Kirk/Spcok YOU HATE GAY PEOPLE AND THEY'VE BEEN THE SYMBOL AND CANON FOR GAY PEOPLE FOREVER*cough*

Never does matter to those wackos that, maybe, just maybe, some people ship OTHER gay pairs or that if they ship a canon ship (like Spock/Uhura) that they don't hate gay people?

I think Kirk/Spock is best enjoyed somewhat cracky, in spite of a first-generation set of works that's straighter than a phaser beam in the absence of a gravitational field.
