Annoying shipper attitudes?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, have you ever felt really annoyed at the way large/vocal portions of the shippers of [insert pairing here] go about their shipping? Like, attitudes towards non-shippers, bashing of other characters, OOC interpretations of the characters' feelings and motivations, or any other kind of thing? Even if you don't mind the ship itself (or may even ship it)?

Vent here!

E.g.: I really cannot stand the way Kirk/Spock shippers tend to make their ship-related duties irrelevant dull background jobs that neither of them really care about or are interested in and have them just want to sit around being ~domestic~ all the fucking time, when in fact their jobs are the most important things in their lives.

Overly-devoted shippers. Like, someone ships A/B, someone else A/C, and if I chime in and say I can ship both ans also A/B/C or A/D, they go ballistic and hold a truce in their pairing war to rage against "the traitor who MUST pick a side, of course no you canNOT ship both!"
...sorry, what?!

I kind of hate shipping in general to be honest. I feel like a lot reduces characters into some sort of hot stereotype with little or any consideration for the reasons behind the character.

The Johnlock shippers on my dash. They promote the villain!Mary theory so that Mary would turn out to be a mole and wouldn't get in the way of their beloved supposedly-canon (Oh MY GOD) ship. YANNO WHAT FOLKS. I SWEAR I'LL RAGEQUIT THE FUCKING SERIES IF THIS EVER HAPPENS.

I'm in the SNK fandom and I hate basically... all the shippers.

The Erwin/Levi shippers just write BDSM forever, size kink, daddy kink, like can we get some characterization please? If you're at all vanilla you'll have to stay the hell away. And yet they are insufferably smug and view themselves as so intelligent, make lots of posts about how the ship is 'totally canon', and thought that Erwin having Levi beaten was omg so hawt so shippy kyaa but call all the Eren/Levi shippers sick fucks.

Then the Eren/Levi shippers just write crappy OOC AUs all over, because apparently all the characterization they want is older dude who says 'brat' a lot paired with younger cute dude the end. At least they aren't quite as smug, just dumb.

IDK those are the main pairings and the main ones that piss me off. It's a shame 'cause I could get behind both pairings theoretically but idk if there are any sane fans at all.

People who are vicious and don't shut up about a ship they hate because idk "i hAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE it so much". Like a person who responded to a Scorpiusx Rose Weasley pic with "Nice drawing but these characters are abominations". Commenter, please take your passive aggressive obsessiveness and stick it where the sun don't shine.

I'm honestly sick of people who can't let someone just enjoy and have fun with something if they don't like it "this is a nice story but Alice should be with Charlie and not Bob, it would make the story better. Alice / Bob SUCKS"

How about no, and fuck off? Write your own damn story if you like that pairing so much.

I don't mean people can't criticize or point out flaws in a relationship, but I hate seeing childish people shit all over someone else's relaxation and fun because "NUUUU STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE".

Also shippers who feel the need to bash, though that sort of goes with the above.

Agree 100% with your Kirk/Spock complaint. It's like "dude! You just wrote a great romance novella about two dudes on a spaceship! Too bad they bear almost no resemblance to the actual characters I shipped and wanted to read about in the first place!

Also, replace "Kirk" and "Spock" with "Holmes" and "Watson" and that fits perfectly too. (Seriously, I once read a post on tumblr beaming about how cute post-hiatus H/W fic was, because "they're just sitting around being cute and domestic and having sex and only taking cases in order to save up enough to buy a cottage to retire together!!111" This, about the man who depends on cases for mental stimulation so much he's constantly teetering on the verge of a drug problem, and the man who's so enthusiastic about mystery-solving he constantly ducks out of his jobs and keeps fuckloads of case-notes that he never intended to publish. I think I sat staring at the computer screen frozen in horror for about ten seconds after reading that.)

Also, while I ship Ron/Hermione like burning, I hate how everyone only focuses on Ron's perspective and issues when realizing his feelings, and just assume that Hermione was sitting and waiting in secret the entire time. I could also level this complaint at JKR in book 7 too.

Hm, what else? I guess any ships that goes "oh, I ship X/Y OVER X/Z even though X/Z was a past pairing that has already canonically ended, not a rival ship" This happens in so many different pairings.

I only really hate it when the pairing causes the fans to bash characters that are canonically "getting in the way" or whatever. Like all the bashing of Tonks by some Remus/Sirius fans or the bashing of Jennifer Keller by Sheppard/McKay fans. It's cool to ship something noncanon or to even dislike a character, but sometimes it gets annoying how often characters like this get bashed.

Speaking of K/S, I really, really hate it when people try to "defend against" Spock/McCoy by demonizing McCoy's interactions with Spock (or demonizing the other half of any alt pairing, lookin' at you Uhura). I have encountered people who claimed Bones is a genuine racist who hates Vulcans and he and Spock loathe each other, and I'm like... DUDE. WHAT SHOW DID YOU WATCH.

And basically anyone who claims their non-canon ship is SECRETLY canon because they left this hint and that hint - or anyone who just assumes that everyone ships this one ship because it's just so totally obvious, who wouldn't ship it? :P

One of my old fandoms used to completely ignore the game's chronology so they could pair up two characters who literally met once and knew each other for about 48 hours before one of them died, and ... okay fine, AUs are valid and so on, but it completely ruins the entire point of the game if that character just lives and runs off to be domestic with the surviving character. :P

People who obviously don't know shit about canon but decided they knew a shitton of stuff about canon anyway, and start writing *essays* about their ship, disregarding 50 years' worth of canon material.

I'm not saying it's not okay to jump into a fandom without knowing everything, but don't pretend you know the characters and the varying characterizations they might have in canon as well as someone who does know this stuff.

Character bashing of the person that 'gets in the way' is a big peeve of mine, also 'rival' ship bashing, I never understood that one because if I don't ship it I'm not going to see it(unless it does a surprise crop up in a fic but I've only had that happen a handful of times).

Another slight peeve as well is devaluing every relationship that the two characters ever had to make the ship OMG TWU WUV, like any romantic relationship the two characters had prior were meaningless and idk that just annoys me(but I think that one might be more of an age thing because it never used to bother me when I was younger but as I've grown up it irks me more).

Re: Annoying shipper attitudes?

Not a shipper issue so much as a fan issue, but any of the ORIGINAL CANON IS ONLY CANON folks. You know, comics vs movies, manga vs anime, books vs movies, movies vs video games, television shows vs tie in novels, and so on. It comes up a lot in shipping too, especially with loose adaptations.

(Basically, I don't give a fuck about comics canon when I'm writing MCU fic, so you complainers can fuck right off.)

I dislike shippers who yell about their pairing being "so canon!" when it clearly isn't. A pairing doesn't have to be canon to be appealing, nor does it being canon make it any better.

I find it facepalmy how incest shippers of same-sex siblings sometimes accuse people who don't like their ship of being homophobic. Perhaps their issue is with the incest, not the gayness? Just perhaps? Especially when they specifically say that their issue is with the incest, not the gayness, and ship other slash pairings that aren't canonically blood relations?

Eh, I only really dislike things where people act like you can only ship one thing ever and can't seem to realise I can like the source material, I can like various fanfics, I can like shipfic and genfic and all kinds of things at the same time...and that what I like in fic is not necessarily what I like in canon.

Only really two that get me.

"My ship is the only ship! I must attack all others!" And "Geeeez, how can you shiiiiip? I must whine about this all over the place because whyyyyyy can't you not ship like me?"

The last one only really annoys me when they're spewing that stuff in someplace outside their own blog/journal/whatever.

The really vocal Sterek shippers who've pestered Jeff Davis and the actors about it being canon.

I'm a huge Sterek shipper and it doesn't have to be canon for me to enjoy it. I just wish those people would stop embarrassing themselves and making the rest of us look crazy.

Extreme canon purist shippers who are aggressive to non-canon shippers. I've seen this a lot in Disney fandom when it comes to non-canon or crossover ships, possibly enhanced by nostalgia goggles?

"HOW DARE YOU NOT SHIP THE CANON COUPLES AND ONLY THE CANON COUPLES. YOU ARE SPITTING IN THE FACE OF MY CHILDHOOD. MY. CHILDHOOD."

Re: Annoying shipper attitudes?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Het shippers tendency to act as though their ship is cannon if the male and female character interact a lot - even if it can be interpreted as just friends - and get either absolutely venomous or condescending if you suggest otherwise. Especially irate and condescending if you ship one of the characters in their ship in a slash or femmslash pairing.

I ship the woman(A) who's part of the big ship with male character (B) with male character (C) instead. AC just works better to me. I can't believe how some people who ship AB can sneer at the slightest suggestion that you ship AC or that it could be possible. They act like AB is canon when it really isn't despite there being potential.

Pairing the spares. I hate it when shippers *need* to pair off everyone else no matter how far into the blue haze of the background they are. I want to read about the ship the fic says is the main pairing, not veer off and have half or more of it about other ships.

Femmeslash shippers who are so obsessed with how 'perfect', 'incredible', and 'flawfree' the pairing they ship is. Like I get the feeling they feel they're being progressive by shipping a f/f pairing and putting the female characters up on a pedestal? But all they're really doing is erasing flaws and characterization, and potential angst that would make for good drama in fanfic. I want to see f/f pairings that feel real and human :-(
