What is fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Do you consider yourself to be "in fandom"? Or just a fan? What does it take to be a part of a fandom? Writing fic, making art, fanmixes, cosplay, conventions, or just liking something?

I don't consider myself in fandom. Because I don't write fic or make art. I DO make GIFs but I don't consider this to be that amazing. :|

I don't even make GIFs (unless secrets count), so I'm even less in fandom than you are. Plus I read a lot (less than I used to). Not a popular pastime in general fandom these days.

I read fic like crazy!

ayrt

I don't even read fic (very rarely), it's books I read. I think that makes me some kind of fandom dinosaur. D-:

Nah. I wish I had more time to read books. Been thinking of getting some audiobooks for work.

I think it's more about how much you like something. And being clued in to a certain way of thinking/talking about stuff you like in a way that marks you as part of fan culture, for lack of a better explanation.

Like, I always consider myself to be a part of fandom, even though my participation is kind of sporadic.

Yes, good point. I don't think you have to actively write fic or make art in order to be part of fandom. The difference between "fandom" and the general public is that fandom views the show/movie/book in question as more than just a piece of escapist entertainment.

Watching a show/movie just to pass the time and then immediately forgetting about it, like a disposable product, is not fandom. The members of "fandom" want to analyze and examine the show/movie/book on a deeper level, not just accept it at face value.

I think "fandom" is definitely a different group of people than the general viewing public who just enjoy the shows/movies/books in a casual way, as evidenced by the fact that some things which are hugely popular with the general public are much less popular in online fandom circles, and vice versa.

Anyone who goes to fandomsecrets on a regular basis is in fandom imo.

...even when that's the only participation? I mean, I'm here daily (yeah yeah pathetic anon) but I don't do fandom anywhere else. Not anywhere. And I couldn't even say I'm in any of the major fandoms that are popular on FS right now.

So am I still in fandom? IDK...

Fandomsecrets is fandom of fandom, so yeah. I think it counts.

Yeah I think so, but if you don't feel that way that's fine I guess?

Same here, anon. Most of my fandoms are dying fandoms that had their heyday years ago. Don't participate in them. Mainly lurk. Not into anything tumblr or FS squees over either b

This

F!S is literally my only involvement with fandom, and tbh it's really more "an awesome community for talking about geeky shit I like" than "a fandom community" in my mind

My minimal definition would be interacting with other fans. I think that often includes creating fic/art/mixes but I think commenting on others' work counts too. That's why I don't feel like I can consider myself in any fandoms even though I'm a fan of various things. Sometimes I read fic but I never interact with anyone. Except here sometimes.

I consider myself a fan, not in fandom, because I rarely participate. I'm not creative or social.

I consider myself to be in fandom if I am actively participating, be it fanart, fic, discusssions, meta, just plain talking about it, reviews, reblogging etc.

I consider myself a fan if I just keep it to myself and I am happy to enjoy it in my own little corner with little interaction with others.

I consider myself to be in fandom. With as much fic and other fandom stuff I consume, I'd hope I'd be considered "in fandom." I don't think you have to write or produce other things to be part of fandom (though I do write fics).

I'm definitely in fandom. (*looks at fic she is procrastinating from writing*) I think being "in fandom" really just involves the semi-regular production of, consumption of, or interaction with fanworks or fan groups.

(Coming back to this, I've thought of a succinct way to sum it up, that I think is terribly clever because I've had about 2-3 hours of sleep last night. You're in a fandom if you do one or more of the three C's: contribute, consume, or communicate in fan spaces.)

I think it's any of all of those things, but... I would never say someone who "just likes something" is in fandom, because to me, doing all those other things is way more than just liking something. Fandom is when you're so obsessed with something, you call your fandom friends at six in the morning because of something fandomy that happened. And there should be some sort of activity - conventions, fanart, even just messageboard/LJ discussions. It all comes together, but not all of those things have to be done.

Does that make sense?

Watching, reading, talking, and reviewing.

Oh, if you subscribe to one or more genre specialty blogs or magazines, you're in.

I have a long-standing thought on this, by which I classify the fandoms I've spent time in and around.

What counts for me as being "in fandom" is that I find communities, I talk with other fans, talk at length with fanfic authors, generally putter around and participate in things by commenting with thoughts and opinons.

I occasionally do art things, I may, just may, write small ficlets, but the biggest creative outlet I have, if I find a character I feel I can work with, is RP.

A fandom I am not "in" is one where I am curious about the canon, but all I do is go look and see if there's some interesting fic to read. I may leave reviews to those fics, but that's the extent of my involvement.

So TL;DR, I'm in a fandom if I do more than read an occasional fanfic and communicate with other fans beyond an occasional review.

I always considered it to be how much you interact with other fans and/or contribute fan works. I do little of either for most things I love and only consider myself to be in a couple fandoms if even that. Even on FS I don't participate in the fandomy threads much....
