Unpopular favorites?

What's a movie/game/book/show/etc that you love, but it's really unpopular? Bonus points if it has passionate anti-fans or invokes strong hatred in people.

Not a particular title, but I truly like the yaoi genre as a whole. :-/ Not that it's "unpopular" but it does invoke hatred? And I wouldn't jump to admit I'm a fan at my age? (not a teenager)

I liked Star Wars: episodes 1, 2 and 3... I even found JarJar Binks enjoyable (you can't hurt me! I'm anon!). But I'm not a passionate fan of the series, and the new movies came out when I was a kid so it would've been tough for me to be an elitist.

I didn't like 1, but 2 was great and I have vague memories of adoring 3 although for some reason I've never gone back and rewatched it.

Um, does it count if I love it in full knowledge of it's awfulness, but sadly can't find anyone who, like me, is of the opinion that it's So Bad It's Good, rather than just a worthless piece of shit?

Because the DC Comics series "Countdown to Final Crisis" and the Frank Miller movie "The Spirit". They are both exquisitely awful and I love them. Countdown is some of the most fun I've ever had reading comics (and I read quite a lot of comics!). Seriously, I love every convoluted, nonsensical, cracked-out subplot in the whole glorious mess. I love the fact that it's a mess. I love the fact that even the characters think it's a mess. I love its awfulness to a degree where the awfulness itself gives it literary value. Look at my icon! I got it from there! And I will defy anyone who says the whole thing was worthless. HDU. I never laughed more at a comic since I read Nextwave.

As for The Spirit, I genuinely love the OTT Sin City-esque visual aesthetic and think some scenes (where it wasn't too garish) were kinda gorgeous in a parody-noir way. And I really had fun with the completely insane dialogue style, especially as spoken by Samuel L. Jackson. I mean, I get a shudder whenever I realize that this was supposed to be a tribute to Will Eisner, not a silly parody, but still.

haha countdown haha

This is why I like you. Because you like Countdown so I don't have to.

Countdown totally had So Bad It's Good aspects (like Evil Mary Marvel using Kyle Rayner as a bludgeon...I still laugh my ass off every time I see that panel - I'm pretty sure by that point, the writers knew they were playing with a train wreck and just ran with it).

I unironically love the Spirit movie. The best part is watching it with someone who's never seen it before and just looking at their face during the scene where Samuel L. Jackson melts the kitten. And the dialogue is so wonderfully bad. "Somebody get me a tie, and it damn well better be red!"

Cassandra Clare's books.

Yes, they're popular everywhere off the fandom side of the internet, but that's irrelevant since this is Fandom Secrets and she does have a hatedom.

Re: Unpopular favorites?

...Same. Though I've only liked the ones that are set in Victorian England.

Re: Unpopular favorites?

The Schumacher Batman films (Batman Forever moreso than Batman & Robin, although I'm fond of both of them). Yes, I know they're stupid. Yes, I'm aware that George Clooney is a terrible Batman. Yes, I have read the comics. No, I don't think those two movies are the worst thing to have ever happened to the franchise.

On a related note: I <3 All Star Batman and Robin because it's so completely over-the-top and ridiculous it crosses the line between "bad" and "so bad it's good", then crosses it AGAIN, then crosses it a THIRD time, then uses the line as a skipping rope. How can you NOT love a comic in which Batman and Robin paint an entire house yellow so Green Lantern won't be able to use his ring, and then they offer him a glass of lemonade, and he responds with "Damn you and your lemonade!", and all this is done completely seriously without a trace of irony?

Also: My favourite Harry Potter book is the one that the rest of the fandom thinks is the worst. (It's Chamber of Secrets, for those of you not in the know.)

Also also: The first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was fantastic, the movie was pretty good too, and IDGAF if every single other BtVS fan disagrees. HATERS GONNA HATE.

I quite enjoy the Fantastic Four movies, but never admit this to other comic fans or super-hero movie fans because I get frequently told that I am wrong and why I should change my opinion.

The Devil May Cry reboot game. I get people being disappointed that it's not like the original games but I enjoyed it for what it was and don't think it's that bad. It is however not liked at all on the internet as far as I can tell.

Van Helsing. Good god I love that cheesetastic monster romp, plus it has what I consider to be the best werewolf designs in any movie or TV show. I don't think it has a large contingent of anti-fans though but most people I know are very much in the 'but why do you like it? It's so shit' camp.

Uhhhh, guess Into Darkness because every time it's mentioned almost all I see is hate. That's fine, but I liked it and sometimes feel afraid to mention it because people FREAK OUT over that movie for some reason. *shrugs*

Plus ALL the Matrix films and all the Star Wars films. Some might've been better than others, but I still enjoyed them all.

Oh, and Gears of War. Yes I actually like the characters and the storyline. (People that haven't played always balk at me saying there are some moving moments in that game, but I'm not making it up!)

Dragon Age 2. I made the mistake of hanging around the Bioware forms when it was released, and the amount of hate was horrible. I love the game.

This isn't an unpopular opinion so maybe it doesn't count, but I love Ender's Game even though I despise the author. I found it a truly touching and beautiful book, but I still refuse to do anything that might give the author money.

I kinda prefer the pre-book-5 fanon Draco Malfoy. There were a couple of different trends at the time, and I didn't like all of them, but several of them were really enjoyable, especially under the right writer. Canon was good, but fanon got there first.

High Anxiety doesn't get enough love, imo. Sure, it's not Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein, but it's still Mel Brooks.

It's not a show, but I put pepper on my fries. Apparently, that's just not done, because everyone thinks it's weird. And I put ketchup on my potato chips.

I unironically love the movie Queen of the Damned and would choose it over the book version any day. Yup.

Mustn't also forget the Scarlett miniseries (as in the sequel to Gone With The Wind) which I found infinitely better than its predecessor. I loved the atmosphere, clothes and background in GWTW but by the end of the movie I was loathing every character so it was a breath of fresh air for me to see that the sequel had different actors playing Scarlett, Rhett and everyone else. (Joanne Whalley and Timothy Dalton were perfect replacements. I ended up loving this version of Scarlett to bits) Apparently this is blasphemy though.

I'm enjoying Lost Girl. All I heard about it before I started watching was "it's so bad. omg." and "her power is rape!11"

The world building and supporting cast are pretty cool though.
