Haven't been in this fandom for ages, but still? I mean, ngl I still balk at Japan/anyone in East Asia, and Turkey/Greece, but is Cold War shipping still a thing that bothers people? I don't know why that one doesn't bother me so much :|a

For me the ship didn't bother me - but the way a lot of the fans used the Cold War [and all the wars that spawned from it] as "proof" of the "sexual tension" rubbed [still rubs?] people the wrong way.

Right right. I must have repressed the way people used to talk about "canonical real life events and history!" to the point it went from questionable to outright skeevy.

Maybe I'll just skip the metas and fic, and just look at the art without reading the artist's notes.

Yeeeah, idk. It actually wasn't too bad as long as you avoided the crazier corners of the fandom, plus [at least on lj] comm mods were usually pretty good about saying "These posts don't belong on this comm".

Fic-wise...it didn't really come up like that? Like, at least the fic I was reading, usually focused on the characters reacting to events, not the events being caused by their "Super!Sexy!Lust" or whatever. IDK though, I might just have gotten lucky and been stumbling around the more mature [for lack of a better term] parts of the fandom.

Good point. I like to think it wasn't that bad when I left (because I was still there hyuk), but given how spread out it is on the meme and tumblr, it should actually be challenging to run into a consistent stream of bad.

Oh. I'm just looking at hetalia right now, and I'm getting kind of nostalgic. I remember when there was this huge influx of posts and members per day that I had to give up on having it on my reading page. If you happen to have any recs offhand, and don't mind, I would certainly love them btw

If you're looking historically, not just East Asia. They also invaded my part of the woods and I'm way South.

But I see Hetalia as mainly fictional, and only broadly based from reality, like those Jane Austen-with-tentacle-monster novels, so I don't really balk at any pairing anymore.

Did Himaruya end up adding your country to the cast? Like in a comic, or just a card or sketch drawing. I haven't checked the lists yet, but I remember that general Asia had China, Taiwan, Hong Kong (as twins iirc), and South Korea. Thailand eventually. Never really was interested in pairings that had a character that hadn't been drawn yet though tbf.

He drew some rough sketches, and we only learned that my country's a girl and knows all about good food (accurate, heh). But then again this was years ago, so who knows what's been added to canon now.
