Do people really do that? That's funny. Haaaaa~

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. This fandom loooooves dragging nationalism into its wank, and shipping wank is no exception.

I once saw wank over Hungary/Austria (which is canon). Started with somebody saying something like "Himaruya's portrayal of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is not 100% historically accurate, therefore if you ship Hungary/Austria you are a bad person."

Some do. When I was in the fandom it had a *lot* more to do with the fact a ton of the shippers used the wars caused by the Cold War as "proof" of the "sexual tension" between the two characters...which offended/put off a lot people.

American fans get offended by this? As an American fan, I have to say I don't really get WHY. (Admittedly this is one of my favorite pairings, so I'm not exactly an unbiased observer here lol.) Seems to me it'd make more sense for RUSSIAN fans to get offended, if anyone, given how fandom sometimes portrays their guy. But then nothing in Hetalia fandom generally makes sense ever, so.

Just wanted to say how I was looking at this secret thinking it looked familiar and I finally saw the source and realized it's an old fanartist I used to follow.
Good times

I never saw people arguing about this ship but I'm not surprised they'd try to use Cold War as evidence against it

I've never seen people use the Cold War as evidence against this ship. Mistaking the Cold War for sexual tension, holy hell yeah, but never against it. Then again, a lot of the RusAme / AmeRus shippers are a little... goofy, to put it nicely, and that's coming from a RusAme shipper.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was in this fandom, someone was complaining about people seeing sexual tension in the Cold War, because it was "more like a dick-size competition".

A dick-size competition sounds pretty damn slashy to me lol.

Secret 10 - Hetalia: Axis Powers (manga, anime)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-28 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a fanart of Russia and America? From the manga/anime series "Hetalia: Axis Powers". America, a man with light skin, short blond hair, wearing eyeglasses, a pink shirt and a red tie gave a pink heart with a red heart on it to Russia, a taller man with light skin, short grayish brown hair and wearing a blue sweatshirt and a cream-colored scarf. The fanart is credited to "hinoneko".]

I find it HILARIOUS when American fans get offended by the existence of this ship. Actually, I find it hilarious in general when people in this fandom drag nationalism into their shipping wars. It's like patriotic icing on top of the wank cake.

American fan here... Honestly, I've never thought to be offended by this ship for anything (other than piss poor characterization and crazy shipmates but that's a whole other argument!). I can see why people drag nationalism into ship wars, but in the end, it's two fictionalized parody / borderline satirical representations of landmasses, hashtag calm your tits.

As a side note, I adore the piece of fanart you used for this secret, OP. Makes me giggle just thinking about it. "You rhymed 'blue' with... 'blue.'" "That's not the point!"

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
There are ships that I could see myself getting angry about for nationalist reasons.

But that's not even close to being one of them.

Are most Hetalia fans even old enough to have lived through/remember the Cold War? I mean I'm sure there might be some, but from what I've seen the fandom tends to be mainly teenagers.

But since shipping is SRS BZNS I'm not surprised that people are using actual historical events to enforce/discredit a ship. "YOU SHIP US/CANADA? FUCK YOU THEY BURNED DOWN OUR WHITE HOUSE IT CAN NEVER BE CANON"

But I can imagine what kind of wank would be stirred up by people shipping China/Japan or Greece/Turkey. Those be dangerous waters.

Or pretty much any variation of Balkanshipping.

Actually it would be super hilarious to see peoples' reactions to that.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, most of the people I've seen offended by Rus/America are actually more offended by the fact that a lot of those shippers use the actual wars caused by the Cold War to say "That was totes sexual tension!" and...honestly? I can see where they were coming from.

In fairness, this was what it was like back when I was in the fandom a year or two ago, so that might have changed.

From what I've seen most Hetalia fans (in the US at least) are between the ages of 12 and 16. Which is why I don't cosplay Hetalia anymore, since I'm 26 now and feel kinda weird at the con photoshoots when I'm like 7-8 years older than the rest of them. But that's why most of them fail so spectacularly when it comes to knowledge and interpretation of historical events. I figure they'll grow out of it when they hit college and actually have to LEARN history (since they clearly are not learning a darn thing in their current classes.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
In my most recent polisci class, I read a paper on the USSR's attempts at recognition. I swear, it read as "I hope senpai notices me". I don't watch Hetalia, but that class made me finally get it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
makes you wonder what they teach children these days

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
I remember personifying countries in history classes before I heard of Hetalia. The series both excited and disappointed me.

Haven't been in this fandom for ages, but still? I mean, ngl I still balk at Japan/anyone in East Asia, and Turkey/Greece, but is Cold War shipping still a thing that bothers people? I don't know why that one doesn't bother me so much :|a

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
For me the ship didn't bother me - but the way a lot of the fans used the Cold War [and all the wars that spawned from it] as "proof" of the "sexual tension" rubbed [still rubs?] people the wrong way.

takaraikarin: Fanart of Tim Drake in Kon-El's costume (DCU - Tim - Kon's)

[personal profile] takaraikarin 2013-12-29 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
If you're looking historically, not just East Asia. They also invaded my part of the woods and I'm way South.

But I see Hetalia as mainly fictional, and only broadly based from reality, like those Jane Austen-with-tentacle-monster novels, so I don't really balk at any pairing anymore.

How is it 'nationalism' to be bugged by the idea of treating the cold war as 'sexual tension'? Please explain.

I just don't like rivalslash. It's got nothing to do with nationalism. This is true for me all across the board.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Is this the only ship that has that? There are plenty of other ships that would probably draw much more ire from more recent events.
