Wait, what? How on earth is DBZ deep in any way?

One of the BIG ones is family/friends and relationships in general. An example would be how Vegeta reacts to Future!Trunks as opposed to little!Trunks. His growth as a father and an individual from Cell Saga to the Buu Saga.

They didn't say it was deep, just deeper than they thought it would be. Depending on their expectations, that might not have been hard.

Secret 1 - Dragon Ball Z

I used to hate anime, until my brother invited me to watch this. I'm so happy I did! On hindsight, this series was much deeper than I first realized. (Silliness and battles that wouldn't fucking end aside.)

The general art style can be off putting to some people and some things in anime have cultural gap.

And a lot of people's first impression is either hentai or children's cartoons.

I've liked anime for over a decade, but I thought I hated Dragonball until my boyfriend showed me the original series. Turns out it's one of the most insanely watchable things there is. (We also spent a lot of time figuring out that almost every major character is analogous to someone in Adventure Time. But that's neither here nor there.)

DBZ, Pokémon and Digimon were my introductions to anime, all the way back when. It could be the shittiest show on earth, and I'd still remember it fondly for that reason. However, if you ignore the (severe) pacing problems, I think it doesn't hold up that badly on rewatch? Even now?

Mind you, I could just be saying that because Vegeta, and the adorable that was Gohan and Piccolo in the early arcs.

I love DBZ still. It was such a big part of my childhood. It is the only 250+ episode anime that I watched to the end.

Recently, I've been hankering for Bulma/Vegeta and Trunks/Goten fics. I feel like I've traveled back in time to high school.

I loved DBZ as a teen. Didn't watch it right away because I thought it was going to be dumb (don't ask me why, I couldn't even tell you now), but got hooked later on. DBZ is extremely entertaining, and yea, there were positive messages in the show. (Plus, Piccolo and Vegeta were super hot and two of my first crushes.)

Oh man, DBZ is still something me and my brother (and cousin and tons of my friends) still bond over. My gosh, all those episodes waiting for Namek to freaking explode...

Also we saw the original series, and it's still so fun to watch!

Cartoon Network started airing DBZ when I was in college, and I loved the show. We just recently watched DBZ:Kai with our daughter, and I had forgotten how much the final episode annoyed me. Overall, I really like the show a great deal, but that final episode with Goku abdicating any responsibility he had toward his family and leaving Chi-Chi alone really irked me. I know that one of Goku's endearing traits is his childlike wonder, but he is a father and a husband too. IDK

This is hilarious to me because I started reblogging this one girl's Vegeta/Bulma art on tumblr and with every one I reblogged I was sitting there going god damn it now i want to rewatch the series and WHY NOW

what great timing. That said idk about 'deep' but this show has such a fond place in my heart. My childhood!

Let's not talk about embarrassing crushes on some of the characters when I was young though......

True, a lot of the story can be lost in all the drawn out battles (sadly, over the course of 300 episodes, I think there's only like maybe five battles... and I'm only half-kidding). One of my favorite moments was when Goku got to meet Goten. It was such a cute moment. But then you realize this guy has been dead like twice already, and with the increasing amount of dragon balls and wishes (hey! So-and-so died! But it's okay since we can just wish them back, amirite??), you see how seriously they take life and death in the series. It's just absurd.
