Off topic but can someone please explain to me why Anna couldn't go outside during the years she was in the castle? In the song "For the first time in forever" she makes it seem like she's rarely had contact with "actual real live people" before, which is strange cuz you'd think she'd be free to wander around town and make friends. She could've at least made friends with a castle servant? :/

Plothole. Unless her parents are really shitty, and whoever was running the kingdom between their death and Elsa's coronation was really shitty too, it doesn't make sense.

I felt like the whole 'stuck indoors' thing was like the writers were still hung up over Rapunzel's storyline--except this time the protagonist was unnecessarily stuck indoors.

you'd think she'd be free to wander around town and make friends

And generate a shitstorm just by appearing, possibly be kidnapped and held for ransom, or even killed by people who aren't big fans of their kingdom and its royalty? That's a realistic cause to stay in a guarded castle all the time, although whether it's implied or ignored in a story depends on whichever's more plot-convenient.

You'd think that she'd be allowed to meet the nobles' children though.

I thought doors were closed by the parents originally in fear that Elsa's magic would be discovered so they closed the doors so she wouldn't accidentally freeze anyone.

Then after they died Elsa continued to keep them closed out of fear of being discovered.

I am not sure why Anna could not go out though, fear that she'd come to harm without Elsa to keep an eye on her?

I just assumed Anna stayed in voluntarily so Elsa wouldn't be completely alone after their parents died, but she went out regularly beforehand.

It doesn't make a ton of sense. My best guess is the servants were all adults (and it doesn't look like they had that many of them), and while Anna probably saw the children of other nobles once in a while, her parents might have done their best to keep everyone at a distance to protect Elsa. Still, I think you're not supposed to think too hard about it.

Because it's apparently a law that all modern Disney princesses have to be alone and cloistered and yearn for adventure, regardless of how much sense that makes in context.

Because it didn't OCCUR to her to leave. That's the entire point behind Elsa going, "Then leave." Her expression is one of confusion because she doesn't understand WHY Anna has stuck around if she can't live like that. Meanwhile, Anna never even bothered to think about leaving and going on her own travels and such. She never asked--she assumed that because Elsa wanted nothing to do with the outside world, she was bound to that, too.
