The fact that they became strangers to each other IS the entire plot of the movie...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
mte

that's what so tragic about their relationship; they're sisters, they shouldn't be strangers, and yet they are due to tragic circumstances.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I would go that far, but it is a huge plot point. So yeah, there was a reason for that, op.

they don't ever ACT like it after that one party scene, though - they run around as if they've been close for years and all the normal family truisms apply

they never DEAL with the fact that they're strangers in spite of all their dramatic declarations and probably genuine feelings, and it's just one more thing that makes the movie feel hollow and incoherent to me

I never thought their relationship was genuine as children.

Personally, I agree with just about everything you said, though I do like all of the toilet humor that came out of "Let It Go" on tumblr.

I am really glad I've managed to avoid that.

Whereas my sister and I can't stop quoting those bits because they were just so spot on with how we were when we were kids.

Her: Go away, [Othellia].
Me: Okay, bye...

What a weird argument. I don't have sisters and I identify with Elsa a lot... probably more than with any other Disney princess, now that I think of it. Sorry she didn't resonate with you, but it happens.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I identify a lot with the compulsion to shut out people who want to be close to you, which seems pretty common. Elsa's main relationship happened to be her sister, but the issues it involved are much more dependent on their personalities than their exact way of relation.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've identified with a Disney princess until Elsa came along. Sure the others were fun to watch but none of them hit home for me.

Yeah, this.
That theme of keeping a face and hiding what you really are from others is a very common and powerful theme. I thought it would speak to a lot of people esp. in fandom. And it's uncommon for Disney.

Them being growing apart and becoming strangers was the point I thought?

But ok. Not sure what the tangled similarities are though? Well, aside from the 3d models.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
not op, but possible similarities: anna and rapunzel. they're both kinda quirky, extroverted, excited to finally leave their respective isolation (anna being alone a lot and not being allowed to go outside vs rapunzel in her tower), plus, they both have 'one day' to live the life they want (punz going to see the lanterns vs the gates opening for the coronation and anna being allowed to go wherever she wants for a day) and that's... about all i can think of right now.

... however, most of these similarities vary in importance, and particularly for anna, mean very little compared to the actual storyline of frozen.

As a sister, the movie rang SO true to me.

My sister and I were close as kids, but we grew apart as teenagers for various reasons. We were both going through the drama filled teenaged years at the same times. My sister was kinda struggling to figure out who she was. I was wrapped up in my own friends. Etc etc.

But we finished growing up and were content in who we were as people and I think that allowed us to become friends again.

And now she's honestly my best friend.

So yeah, Frozen and the relationship between the sisters hit really close to home for me. Because even in those years when my sister and I weren't close, I would have gone climbing a mountain to find her and save her because I still loved her and she was my sister.

My younger sister and I are still in the "do you want to build a snowman" stage and she caught on to that, which was kinda funny but also sad. She really liked the movie, so I hope she realises I still love her even though we're more distant (literally, there's an ocean between us instead of a door)

So I quite liked the sisterly story line, especially the true love sister-bit. It was nice to sit down with my sister to watch a movie about sisters being sisters XD

That said I have a friend who won't touch frozen because her sister become more and more distant every year and it's really sad that they're not working out.

Secret 3 - Frozen (2013 animated film)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Elsa from the CGI animated film "Frozen". She is a young woman with light skin, aqua-green eyes, long blond hair in a braid and wearing a pretty dress in a light green-blue color with sparkles. She is doing some sort of dance/magic move, summoning large snowflakes and snow.]

I didn't find Elsa sympathetic at all. I didn't buy the sister relationship. Listening to the soundtrack, I think several of the demos make for better stories than the story they ultimately went with. I found both of the male characters more interesting than either sister. I think it bears too many similarities to Tangled (which is my favorite).

I'm tired of people telling me I don't get the relationship because I don't have sisters. I AM a sister. These two are strangers.

I've seen it 3 times. I like it. I wanted to LOVE it.

Off topic but can someone please explain to me why Anna couldn't go outside during the years she was in the castle? In the song "For the first time in forever" she makes it seem like she's rarely had contact with "actual real live people" before, which is strange cuz you'd think she'd be free to wander around town and make friends. She could've at least made friends with a castle servant? :/

I'm having a hard time thinking of many similarities to Tangled. The animation style sure, but that's it really.

I'm having a hard time understanding why the male characters would be more interesting than the sisters. Both dudes seemed kind of flat to me, so...examples?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
You're not obligated to like it or sympathize with the characters. But just because their relationship and Elsa's conflict didn't ring true to you doesn't mean a lot of other people didn't relate to it. I'm glad they went with the story they did.

I thought Kristof was really flat but he wasn't a big part so I didn't care. And Hans was a bit fun but I think because he's more of a mystery than anything, I certainly don't think either one of them could have carried the movie.

Scrolling past, I thought this was a Tangled secret.

Do they have the exact same face and body, with different hair and colouring?

One is a magical agoraphobic blonde princess, and the other is... oh.

:/

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree on the not finding Elsa sympathetic or interesting part, I found her extremely so, and I can relate to her struggles in a non magic sort of way (stress/anxiety and closing yourself off to people because of your situation? Yep I've got that.) One of my main problems with the movie is there wasn't enough Elsa and there was too much Kristoff (I liked him but it felt like his movie sometimes when it needed to be about the sisters.)

But I agree there were some stronger story ideas in the demos. The trolls made more sense when there was a troll prophecy. And the "Life's Too Short" song really sums up sister relationships extremely well. The demos also seemed to feel like they were concentrating more on the sisters at that time, and I really think the biggest problem with the film is that they forgot that the story was supposed to be about Anna and Elsa, not Anna and Kristoff.

I liked the film too, but it could have been a lot tighter story wise.

I also liked it, but I also felt the pacing was going too fast, specially at the beginning. Also I had some issues with and Kristoff and Anna's relationship, mostly that the movie was trying a bit too hard to pair them up and make sure the audience knew they where endgame. And I wish Elsa had more screen time (she's basically the face of the movie), but I figure she was hard to animate, so no luck.

Different strokes, but personally I'm glad that they decided not to do the (cliche) "prophesy" story angle from the early drafts. Holy crap, they even had a freaking children's play about it. Ugh.
