I think the Star Trek reboot is an abomination that never should have been made, but I also think it's ultimately a good thing if it means more people getting into Trek and breathing new life into the fandom. (And yes, I know these are contradictory opinions.)

I feel the same way about XMFC, because there can never be enough X-Men fic.

Oh, ugh. I wish I liked XMFC because I really like the X-Men characters and story a lot ('90's carton and movies are all the canon I know), but XMFC was just... bad. I hated it more than that third movie, I think.

I enjoyed the ST movies, and a lot of the fic that was generated from the first movie. But yeah, they aren't the greatest.

This, to be honest. The reboot was horrifying and so *not my Trek* it hurt, but if that means that TOS gets more love, it's all good. I can not-see the reboot just as easily as anything else i detest.

I hold an honest to goodness personal grudge over JJ Abrams getting Star Trek considering all of his comments about the philosophy of Star Trek, etc.

THE VERY IDEA THAT WE SOMEHOW NEEDED YET ANOTHER MEANINGLESS BLOCKBUSTER THAT KINDA CRAPPED ALL OVER WHAT MADE TOS SO SPECIAL OMG excuse me while I go cry in a corner.

I had *no* clue about his 'thoughts' on TOS when the first movie came out, and i saw it and was like 'wtf did i just watch?'. And then i got to reading and holy hell.

I dunno who thought giving him the franchise was a good idea, but they need a spanking.

I don't think it's contradictory. I didn't like Into Darkness because for a lot of reasons but I do like more people being in fandom. One of these opinions is about the product while one is about the people who like it. Different subjects.

I don't think ST09 and STID are abominations or anything. They're Trek movies that are also kind of bad (ST09) and real bad (STID). It's not really new that this would happen - there's plenty of old Trek that was bad, and I don't think the reboot stuff is bad in some way that makes it fundamentally distinct from, like, Threshold or Final Frontier or Insurrection or whatever else is.

That said, I agree with the whole "don't like it but happy about its effect on fandom" thing.

It's not the badness that makes them different, it's that they are devoid of everything that makes Trek Trek. And on top of that, they're not very good either. If they were either Trek-ish but bad, or un-Trek-ish but good it would be fine, but they're neither.

Ehhhhh I don't think that's fair. I don't. I mean, they're action movies, but they're not unique among Trek movies in that. And I think it's hard to differentiate between being un-Trek and being bad - if they seem un-Trek I think that's probably just a side effect of them being bad Trek movies. I don't think they're so far outside the range of possibilities that, you know, we can say they're fundamentally different.

But that's just my opinion.

Nope. IDGAF about being action or not, that's not what it was. Even Final Frontier and Nemesis felt...in tune with TOS and TNG, respectively, even though I'd say they were technically worse movies than XI or STID. I at least felt they had some fragment of the same atmosphere and ideas, were written by people who actually understood and liked the little things about what made Star Trek so uniquely Star Trek. The big things and the overall plots were fucking terrible, but they didn't feel like they were purposely reversing or misunderstanding everything about what made TOS good.

Which you know, I could have dealt with given the whole alternate-universe thing if the movies had been good. There's a HUGE difference between being bad and being un-Trek.

Eh. Maybe you're right, I don't know.

NAYRT. Aaargggh, Nemesis. Why did you have to mention that?! Every time I have a memory of it, another part of my brain shuts down. That was one poopy turd of a movie.
