Aw, I loved this song so much, and it made me cry in the movie theater. I think it was her relief and joy at finally being free to be herself - that might sound cheesy, but my head!canon was that Elsa was a lesbian like me, so being free of society that thinks you're a monster and a family that constricts who you are, and being able to be yourself meant a lot to me. I cannot wait to karaoke this song. haha..

Why do people all over the internet keep assuming or projecting that Elsa is a lesbian? I mean, that's fine, make up whatever you want since she has no romantic plotline (and honestly the pretty would be off the charts if they gave her a gf) but it kind of baffles me how this is suddenly A Thing.

there is a direct parallel to both being in the closet and being outed

there are a number of things this can parallel and one of them is being gay

it's really not that confusing

Maybe more people are willing to admit their headcanon. It's not like it's a big deal. We're all very, very aware that such a thing would never be canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Merida from Brave got the same thing. If it's a movie about women and one of those women doesn't have a visible love interest, bam, lesbian headcanons.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Because seriously, have you actually listened to the song? No, she doesn't outright ever say she's a lesbian, but the parallel is really easy to draw and obvious. It's a very good analogy for being a homosexual and being glad to finally be free and have your secret out, so you can be yourself.

As an Aspie, I felt it was quite fitting for me too. Being forced to hide yourself to be accepted by the world outside which can be merciless when you stumble even once.

Worked for anxiety, too. I used to bottle up my emotions a lot because they were very strong, and it wound up making me anxious. Letting go of them was the best thing that's ever happened to me, so I really related to Elsa in that sense, too.

As a fellow anxiety sufferer, oh yeah. Particularly the lines "It's funny how some distance makes everything look small / And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all...."

I ship her too much with Jack Frost to headcanon her as lesbian. And normally I'm really not into AU pairings. IDK what happened.

It's one of those cases of "popular fanon getting mixed up with canon" things. A lot of people identified with the whole "hiding your true self and then being outed" theme, and the most popular projection was of someone having to hide that they are gay, and then being outed on it. The fact that Elsa had no romantic interest in the movie (though the post-Letting Go hairstyle sure didn't help, either) led to the whole "Elsa's story is about queerness!" allegory getting so popular as a headcanon/fanon.

But parallel =/= canon. People just have some trouble remembering that.

This.

I like the headcanon, but I'm gonna ship her, or not ship her, with whoever I want, male or female and I'm getting tired as shit of people getting butthurt at not accepting that headcanon as truth.

I sincerely hope this was not directed at me. I said "headcanon" in my post, for goodness sake. Everyone knows that Elsa is not canon gay. (though she's not canon straight, either) I'm not in the fandom if there is one, but I'd have trouble believing anyone actually believes Elsa is canon gay.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Not assuming she is but the story of having to hide who you really are is one a lot of gay people relate to.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

I did say headcanon, you know. I'm gay, and I like to relate to characters where I can. Her "conceal don't feel" mantra made it a pretty easy connection to make.

so very obvious to some of us

[personal profile] solarbird 2014-01-06 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Several others have said it, but I'm adding to the chorus: that song was a goddamn coming-out anthem.

Every, and I mean every, queer person I know who has seen it had the same reaction.

That song makes me regret something fierce that they're sisters because I want to ship them so hard after that song.

So very, very much. So very, very, very much.

So ship them. Who's stopping you?

Because sisters. And to make them not sisters - well, that requires rewriting the first half or so of the film.

Plus I know some people who have been as desperate for a sister story as I am for more dyke fairy tales (see: Melinda Lo's Ash, and not much else), so, yeah.

So I could do it, but it would have to be a seriously different AU, and I'm fine with that, really, but more work. And I might do it anyway. But it's a lot more worldbuilding, and I'd rather tend to do that in my own work. But I might make an exception, because yeah.

Honestly, the fact that they're sisters doesn't even seem to slow down most of the shippers I've seen. There's 300+ Elsanna romance fics on the Pit of Voles right now, and 54 on AO3, some pretty graphic. If incest is a squick for *you* that's one thing, but if it's not then I'd say go for it.
