Buying The Last of Us today!!! + opinions on Metal Gear Rising??

I've been really tight with money, but things finally started to settle down just in time for Christmas, and how I can finally treat myself to something nice :)

I went to grab Tomb Raider last night, but they didn't have it, and it was way too cold to go anywhere else lol so I settled with Metal Gear Rising, because one of the guys recommended it to me and I was desperate for a game. I haven't opened it yet and was thinking about returning it and using the money to contribute to my purchase of The Last of Us. I love hack and slash games, but I'm scared this one is too much of a male story (they usually bore me tbh, unless they're really interesting lol) for me to really get into. Idk idkkkkk you guysssss what do I dooooo

MGR is essentially a continuation from where MGS4's story left off, so if that doesn't interest you (MGS is so male-centric it's not funny, and I'm not the only one who has noticed the gay undertones) you're probably better off trading it for TLOU, which is pretty much GOTY 2013.

I LOVE Metal Gear Rising, LOVE, but I'm a huge fan of the Metal Gear series in general so that helps. The game-play is a far departure from the series but the ridiculous cut-scenes, over the top story and codec conversations are pretty par for the course, so if you're a fan of Metal Gear and love challenging and fun game-play you'll probably adore it, but if not...idk. If you aren't familiar with MGS the story sort of stands on it's own, but it sounds like you might not be too thrilled to play it.

The Last of Us is brilliant, and if major female characters are something you want then it certainly has more of that. Also the relationship between the two leads is INCREDIBLE, and the game-play is tight and exciting, so I would def recommend that too. If you were already leaning towards LOU (and it sounds like you were) you should probably go with that.

Honestly, The Last Of Us is tied with Kentucky Route Zero for my GOTY last year, and with KRZ it's mostly a personal bias thing so I'm not sure it counts. The Last Of Us is simply brilliant, reminding me in a lot of ways of Half-Life 2 (especially at the beginning) among others. In a great many ways it's what the Walking Dead TV show should have been like, instead of the crapfest we got. I love everything about it, including the use of smash cuts, which you don't see a lot in games and heightens the "art film" flavor of the game.

I've seen you mention Kentucky Route Zero before and it looks really cool. The art is beautiful, it sounds really interesting and the whole episodic thing is neat. I see that it's on sale on Steam but I'd rather have the DRM-free version even if it's more expensive. ...IDK if I'll buy it right now, but you've tempted me.

TLOU is wonderful though. Very atmospheric, and such a strong story and cast. I'm still liking Walking Dead, but imo they don't really compare.

Take this with about half a shaker of salt, because due to lack of hardware my opinions on both are based solely on (good) LPs, but:

1. What do you mean by "male story"? MGR has about 3 female characters, 2 of which appear for about half an hour, total, between them, and one of which is a codec character; TLoU has a genuinely strong female lead, plus a good female side character (possibly more than one but I haven't finished the game). Stereotypical plotline-wise, neither of them come off to me as more "male" than the other, and it more comes down to whether you want Bayonetta with dudes and politics or Uncharted with zombies.

2. If you like hack and slash (especially if you enjoyed Bayonetta), stick with MGR because I'm terrible and hate those games and even I thought it looked like hells of fun.

lmao, Bayonetta with dudes is a perfect way to describe MGR, and NGL, I probably had more fun playing MGR (in a gleeful 'THIS GAME IS SO FUCKING AWESOME, OMG, I AM A ROCKSTAR' sense), but imo TLOU has a much stronger story and an overall more intriguing cast. (Again, not that I didn't adore the cast of MGR, but they're two very different games and a lot of MGR's charm comes from previous knowledge of the series, so not sure it's the best starting point.)

No, you're right, I didn't at all mean to imply that most people don't think TLoU had a much stronger story and character acting. I was just saying that, since I didn't know what the OP viewed as boring "male story," I didn't know which one she should pick.

Personally, MGR looked more fun to play, while TLoU looked a lot more fun to watch, but that's probably a function of me hating shooter games more than anything.

I'm going to put a suggestion here in the form of a question. What about Skyrim?

I keep seeing screens of it and it looks GORGEOUS, but I don't know anything about the game in itself. I remember my bro telling me the previous game was pretty boring.

As for MGS, I can honestly say they are the best games ever when it comes to graphics, gameplay and convoluted storytelling. The gay undertones are also all over the place, and I love the characters. MGR isn't developed by Konami, so you should keep in mind it's a totally different game. The villains were pretty good in that one, but the music IMO is atrocious (and I'm used to having magnificent soundtracks with MGS, so...).

The last of us I didn't buy yet, but it looks amazing tbh. I think I'd go for that if I were you, and if you are not familiar with the MGS saga (in case you want to try one, I'd go for MGS2 and MGS3).

Skyrim is a damn good game and MASSIVE (seriously, you could spend hundreds of hours on it), but it has its downfalls. I can't imagine playing if you mind micromanaging things. (Like your inventory. If you feel compelled to take EVERYTHING you're going to be over-encumbered frequently, and even when I'm not nabbing everything under the sun stuff accumulates pretty fast.)

Plus, it's insanely easy to get distracted by side-quests, and because of how much freedom you're given sometimes it can start to feel like you aren't making any progress. I've been wandering around for over 130 hours now, barely even touching the story. Still enjoy it, but for some people that would get boring. (Especially since, even if the game is gorgeous, there are lots of similarities in locations and there are only so many crypts and dungeons and things you can travel through before you start to think, "Haven't I done this before?" It can be repetitive.)

wtf are you talking about, the MGR soundtrack was unironically fantastic if you like buttrock. Also the sound direction for the boss fights was really cool, with dynamic soundtrack usage for different events and segments being underscored by changes in the music (entry/exit of vocals, for example).

IA, the soundtrack is wonderful and incredibly catchy. It fits perfectly with the feel of the game and the fast game-play. I listened to that shit for a month after finishing, and there aren't many bosses in the MGS series that felt as dynamic as the ones in MGR.

it is a VERY male game (But then aren't they fucking all?!) There are only two women in it, one is the typical "evil slut" character, the other is the "clutzy blonde airhead" character. both make me want to cut hideo kojima's dick off.

I'd vote both if you could, because The Last of Us is supposed to be amazing and I love Metal Gear Rising. Like, a lot. I'm not sure I'd call it male centric so much as.... cyborg centric? I am not the best person to ask, since male centric bothers me less than it would others it seems. But. If you love the hack & slash genre almost as much as I do (which is to say a lot), you'd enjoy the gameplay at least. It's not *easy* and I like that. Lots of fun too.

Plus uhhh I guess it would depend on how you feel about Raiden.
