What do you think is the best episode of your favorite show(s)?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
What the title says! Multi-parters are okay, but no general arcs.

I was going to ask "favorite" episode, but since there can be multiple faves for different reasons, I'm going to just ask what you thought was objectively the episode that was best in terms of excellence (writing, acting, directing, etc, all put together).

of the nine currently existing episodes of Vikings, #7 is the best (until the last few minutes). It's hilarious, the battle is awesome, Athelstan hasn't gotten his weird hair yet, everything is great. And then the end of the ep destroys everything.

Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose.

Non-Darin Morgan division: it's an outside the box choice but I'm going to go with Beyond The Sea.

Excellent choice. I'd also go with:

Humbug
Ice
Eve
Squeeze
Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"
Small Potatoes
Home
War of the Coprophages
Bad Blood
Hollywood AD
The Rain King

Agreed so hard on so many of these, but I'm going to sub "In The Pale Moonlight" for best of DS9.

Once Upon a Time is the one with Naomi's holodeck program, isn't it? What a fine little child actress she was, and I loved that episode. (Especially Janeway telling the story about how she, as a child, decided the best way to defeat a fire creature was to FLOOD THE WHOLE DAMN FOREST. That's so JAneway omg)

WORMHOLE X-TREME! <3

My favorite episode of DS9 is probably "Far Beyond the Stars," the Benny Russell episode. It may actually be my favorite thing in the entire genre of science fiction. Don't judge.

(you can judge if you want)

I love the Original Series episode "Is There in Truth No Beauty" (featuring a blind Vulcan-trained human psychic and a non-humanoid alien in a box).

Episode 8 of the third season of the 'Borgias' was the best thing to happen to television ever.

Doctor Who: My favorite episode, at least of New Who, is Vincent and the Doctor. Sorry, I know, sappy. But certainly the best episode of Eleven's run and my favorite of New Who. Not arc-heavy or a super important episode, but it just got me in all the right places.

Babylon 5: World Without End. Sinclair was back and he, Sheridan, and Delenn were all awesome together. I loved the dynamic of the three of them and was sad we didn't get more of that. I love the mytharc stuff of this episode. It just encapsulates all the things that make Babylon 5 what it was.

Game of Thrones: And Now His Watch Is Ended. Dany being all badass and freeing slaves and proving why you don't mess with her. Dragons. Don't care. Love it.

Star Trek TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever" (This is the episode I point to whenever I'm trying to convince people that Shatner really can act.)

Star Trek TNG: "The Measure of a Man"

Elementary: "Snow Angels"

Community: I haven't seen every episode yet, but of the episodes I have seen, I thought "Modern Warfare" was the best.

The Powerpuff Girls: The one where Mojo Jojo turns everyone into dogs.

Leverage: The Rashomom Job

Voyager: Before and After

Mag7: Vendetta

Pushing Daisies: Bad Habits

Doctor Who(Classic): The Curse of Fenric

Doctor Who (Modern): Vincent and the Doctor (ALLOW ME MY CLICHES OK)

BSG: Sine Qua Non/The Hub
(Unfinished Business is a close second)

BtvS: Hush

Lost: I *really* want to be able to name one episode, what makes the episode brilliant is everything leading up to it... (The Incident, if anyone's curious)

TNG: The Inner Light

DS9: as mentioned above, In The Pale Moonlight

badass_tiger: Charles Dance as Lord Vetinari (Default)

I think for Leverage, I'd say the finale, The Long Goodbye Job. Well set-up, so many wonderful call backs to earlier episodes, Nate's plan was fantastic, and the ending was everything I could have asked for.
ginainthekingsroad: Jadzia & Sisko in TOS uniforms- "Trials and Tribbleations" (DS9- Kickin' it Old School)

DS9: "Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast" This was a difficult decision. Other strong contenders were "The Wire", "In the Pale Moonlight" and "Ties of Blood and Water", but this two-parter does so much for both the Dominion War arc and for Odo and Garak's characterization that I had to go with it. The acting is even stronger than the average DS9 episode, the writing is masterful ("Improbable Cause" is simply perfectly paced), and the direction (by Avery Brooks and David Livingston respectively) is just right. It's the episode where everything goes together seamlessly.
nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: Lady Sif)

Supernatural: Nightshifters(Nightstalkers? I can't quite remember), easily my top episode.
A:Team: Steel, it has my favourite Murdock VA breakout in the entire show.
Buffy: gonna be cliche and go with Once more with Feeling.
Angel: Smile Time, although I also really love the episode where they travel to Lorne's home dimension and they find Fred(can't remember the name of it though).
dimestoresaint: Benson and Stabler (Default)

MacGyver: Hellfire (idk, you could definitely argue this, but I loved how straightforward and yet tense it was, with a lot of great simple MacGyverisms...also RDA soaked in sweat, yes I'm ok with this)

The A-Team: Breakout! (the team of BA and Murdock is the best y'all)

Remington Steele: tie between Red Holt Steele and Vintage Steele (RHS is very well-acted and has great character beats as well as great action; VS is the best straight-up screwball comedy they did, makes me laugh my ass off every time, also some great character moments about Laura.)

Scarecrow and Mrs King: Life of the Party (some good old-school spy stuff, also starring Francine and Amanda--two different but equally awesome women, who learn to appreciate each others brand of awesomeness a bit more.)

With Hannibal, I couldn't even say, it's all excellence. All I can do is put them into goofy categories like grossest (I've seen a zillion graphic horror movies and was still shocked by the DVD version of Buffet Froid), funniest (the murder/cooking montage in Sorbet is probably the best of the black humor), loveliest moment for a dark ship (Will's entrance in Fromage), best Shining-inspired bathroom (Sorbet again), etc. It's just my favorite altogether.

Supernatural is great at finales and crack episodes, but aside from those, one that really sticks out in my mind and kind of surprises me every time is On The Head Of A Pin. That whole torture sequence is the darkest, filthiest thing they've ever done. Dean's face.

Supernatural: On The Head of a Pin

Mine for Due South, NewsRadio, Friends, The West Wing, As Time Goes By, and Scarecrow & Mrs. King

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Due South: “Mountie on the Bounty”

NewsRadio: “Bitch Session”

Friends: “The One with Phoebe's Husband”

The West Wing: “What Kind of Day Has It Been”

As Time Goes By: “Avoiding the Country Set” or “The Old Folks’ Party” (with a shout-out to “Relationships” because gorilla-gram)

Scarecrow and Mrs. King: This one is really tough, I have to go for “You Only Die Twice” (with an Honorable Mentions for “I Am Not Now, Nor Have I Ever Been… a Spy” and “All the World’s a Stage”)

My Little Pony (FiM): A Canterlot Wedding. It was just perfect, to me. Top-notch voice acting, especially from the villain. An amazing song that I can listen to over and over again and still think it's one of the best ever on the show, plus two more of worthy quality. Two great new supporting characters and a brilliant villain. A heartbreaking mid-episode breakdown, and a very relatable one, followed by a heart-warming triumph. It basically had everything I love about the show compressed into one two-part episode.

Glee: Sexy. I thought it was a triumph of everything the show stood for, finally resolving(ish) the relationship between Santana and Brittany which was rather nebulous up to that point. The songs were extremely moving (except for "Touch", which was simply hilarious) and performed very well, and it made some good points about the state of sexual education in America. Again, it basically encapsulated everything I love about the show, and represents the high point in the series for me.

The objective best episode of The West Wing is Two Cathedrals. Noel is an extraordinarily close second.

It's scary how good that s2 of West Wing is. The whole end of the season from 17 People, through 18th and Potomac to Two Cathedrals, is fantastic. But almost every episode before that is also really good - Noel obviously, but Somebody's Going To Emergency Somebody's Going To Jail is one of my favorite episodes, Ellie is really touching, Shibboleth is excellent, Stachkouse Filibuster is excellent... it's kind of a stacked season.
