sucks that I have to pay to go to cons. I know, it's par for the course, I don't deserve special treatment, etc, etc. Just sucks that I used to get paid to go attend and now it costs a fucking fortune.

Totally feel you. I used to go with a friend and help out at her booth, so it wasn't a "get paid to go" exactly but it was severely discounted and I got in early etc. But the cons she's been going to have been shrinking the indy artist areas while at the same time hiking the fees for them and she's decided not to attend the ones I used to help out at. Sad because I can't afford to go nor is there really an 'excuse' to go anymore. I miss it.

Cons are so expensive now. I don't know how they justify the huuuuge prices they charge now. :(

how expensive are they? I feel like when I used to go, it was about $40 for the weekend, but it's been so long since I went regularly (2004-2007) that I'm sure I've missed a lot. Plus I went to mid-size established cons in major metro areas.

They were $40 for the weekend when I used to go in the '80's, so that's cool the price didn't go up that much.

Actually I just backchecked my emails (yay search feature) and it was a sliding scale, if you ordered the earliest, $30, then it upped to $35, and then $40 if you pre-reg about 4 weeks beforehand.

It was a midsize convention though, but I thought it was worth it.

The (semi-local) convention I used to attend topped out at around $45 for the weekend if you waited til the last minute to get your tickets. The very local one starts at around $40. I've only attended it once, and was disappointed, but I'm used to Florida (Orlando/Ft. Lauderdale) conventions, which are simply huge.

I can't remember how much Anime Weekend Atlanta cost (I'm sure if I looked hard enough, I could find it but eh) but the price above was for AnimeNext, which was in NJ. I attended it 4 years in a row and then stopped because they moved to a different location in NJ that wasn't as convenient.

I've always wanted to go to a bigger con, maybe San Diego or NY Comic Con, but then I don't know how I'd feel about it after not going for so many years.

I went to AWA once (and really enjoyed it), but I can't remember the cost. I want to say it was around $60, but that was because I waited until the last minute to get my tickets (because I wasn't sure if the boss would let me go).

I would love to go to San Diego Comicon. My friend used to go every year and she and her friends would have a mini-con at the con, because it was the only way they could all get together and geek out about their (very small) fandom.

I absolutely loved AWA the year I went, but it was the people I was with and we had such a great time.

Which is why I'd be worried about jumping back into it without knowing someone who would also have a lot of fun.

I also would want to be a tourist and do the whole San Diego fun stuff so I don't know if that would be too much to squeeze in one weekend. Maybe I'll just wait until a friend moves to San Diego so I can crash at their place.

Having been to San Diego when there isn't a convention, I can tell you a weekend is not enough time to do both.

It depends which cons you go to. There's a tiny fandom I used to be in, it was £250 (US $412) for a weekend ticket, but that was mainly to cover the guest's fees (travel/hotel).

The last con I actually attended, IIRC, it was £70 (US $115) for the weekend ticket, but there were hotel fees on top. That, with travelling, and it adds up fast.

Maybe the con prices have dropped. I googled Comic Con and they had weekend tickets for £31 (US $51), which I'm sure is a lot cheaper than the prices I saw before I stopped attending.

I agree that cons can be expensive which is why I was curious what they cost now because I thought it was pretty reasonable a few years ago. I also was fortunate enough to live close by so I was able to just drive from home.

You're welcome. The few times I was able to attend on a day ticket and travel from home, it was far easier and far, far cheaper. :(

I'm not a regular con-goer, but I suspect a lot of the costs aren't related to cons themselves so much as the costs surrounding them. Even if a ticket is "only" $50, there's still the cost of travel and lodging, and depending on the size of the con and how many other people are also around looking for lodgings, it can be pretty hard to find someplace to stay.

You DO know that without people paying memberships, the con-runners would not be able to afford to hold the damn event? Hotels charge a lot, and those prices are on the rise. Most conventions (not commercial ones, or giant ones with significant media sponsorship, but the average fan-run SF/anime/cosplay con) are run entirely by volunteers who get paid exactly nothing. Everything goes into the event site, supplies for the con, and the travel/hosting of the major guests. Most guests are only paid in travel/accommodation/membership, not money.

It takes a LOT to put one together.

I mean, you must be able to sympathize, right? Of course it's going to suck when you used to get something for free then you have to start paying for it, even if that is just part of the real world.

Maybe, but most people don't get the opportunity to go to cons for free. So I can also understand the people who are of the "enjoy this amazing opportunity that you're getting (or got) while you can (or had it) but don't whine to me if/when it ends" school of thought.

Do i sympathize? ....not really. But I've never gone to a con, less several of them, for free. I'm sure it sucks and I know OP said that and all. But it isn't something I'd go 'poor you' for. :)
