So he's rich, lucky, and has a nice restaurant. Those don't really seem like solid reasons to me, but maybe I'm missing something here. Yeah, rich and successful are nice but they're not like definite guarantee of awesomeness or anything.

i agree in theory but in the context of a completely fictional character i'm not sure what else you'd demand or what you'd be looking for. it's not like you can sit down with the guy and really get to know him.

You don't seem to grasp how hard it is to run a business. ANY business. And a restaurant, where the profit margins are slim and the work is physically backbreaking? It takes more than being a good cook, you have to be a good cook, business manager, accountant and a bunch of other things rolled up into one. Getting a Michelin star for your restaurant is like winning the gold medal at the Olympics except that instead of every four years, you're "competing" EVERY year.

IA.
I would add to that list "And he cooks pretty well".

Newsflash!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Regular people cannot have opinions on things! Only the well-to-do are allowed to judge! Pass it on! Tell your friends! (Unless they're better off than you, in which case, keep your mouth shut, peon.)

yeah the "you can't say shit unless you're dating someone as badass, and also badass=rich" sentiment is not a fantastic look

Pretty sure "beating cancer" isn't one you can attribute to personal character or reason to date. Unless your only criteria for dating is that they be alive.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well I'd hope it's a criteria.

Although it could also make for a pretty entertaining storyline if it wasn't. But that might be too out there for network TV.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think it implies that the person has a strong will... although being rich as fuck is a bigger factor in beating cancer than character.

Because that's all that matters in a guy, right? Women are stupid whores who only want successful men.

Maybe some women want a man who is a decent person? A man who is on her level as a person not just financially stable? Maybe we don't live in the fucking Victorian age anymore??

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's all cool, but none of it speaks to whether he's a good person (which is up in the air given the last episode that he was in, imo).

I don't care about this show or that pairing either way, but uh, when most people talk about being "good enough" for someone they're talking in terms of that person's character, how well they'll be treated, if the two people have similar goals for a relationship, and how happy they'll be together. It's worrying that you think being rich and educated is what makes someone a good partner. And while I admire anyone who is able to live through a disease like cancer, that doesn't have anything to do with dating.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I'm anti-Mycroft/Joan because I'm shallow and think Joan's way out of his league. And it's not like they're in a relationship anyway, they basically just had a one-night stand.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the "not good enough for" criticism because it's really vague and also sort of implies odd external rules about who is allowed to date who.

That said, OP, your description proves the man impressive -- not good. (Not that good is very well-defined. Okay, impressive isn't very well-defined, either. Whatever.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Y'know, you can defend characters you like without pulling ad hominem on the people criticising them. Doing that makes you look childish.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Being a white rich middle aged man is so badass.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think if he were prettier, there'd be a lot less complaining.

Elementary fans refuse to accept Joan Watson being paired off with a white man. Period.

So "rich" and "well-educated" are determinants of whether a man is a good partner? Which century are we in, again?

What is this, the 1950s? How is being rich and successful a measure of a good boyfriend for a woman?

/no horse in this game, don't watch the show, just take issue with your argument.

He blew up all his brother's projects out of spite.

I don't want to see Joan run afoul of his vindictiveness.
