Re: Confession thread?

There are three things that I haven't come out to my family about, being gay, being trans*, and being religious. Of those three I'm most terrified of coming out about my religious belief, because my parents are those smug-athiest asshole type people.

jfc stop writing trans like that. It's already an umbrella term, it doesn't need a fucking asterisk. It makes you look like a whiny tumblr transtrender, stop it.

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
looks like they are talking about themselves, and it's pretty rude to tell someone what they can and can't call themself

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
That's cool, and I'm just going to assume that because they're using that bogus term they're not actually transgendered at all and just think they are because lelelele they want to be the bishie omg tumblr says its so cool.

Don't you know it's transgender.

the correct term is "transgender," not transgendered.

anyway a lot of transgender people find that "trans" refers to trans men and trans women, leaving out nonbinary people. it also doesn't encompass other trans* identities (meaning all those of non-cisgender people). so no trans in itself is not seen as an umbrella term and you have no right to tell people what they can and cannot use to identify themselves.

How I am supposed to pronounce trans*?

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
You get to choose between "transtar" and "transterisk."

a lot of ppl say "trans inclusive" or literally just say trans asterisk like idk if you're genuinely asking or if you're trying to be snarky but you could have googled that easily

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't use google because I don't like their privacy policies, but I did run my question through a search engine and got irrelevant results. I figured it'd be easier to just ask someone whose familiar with the trans community.

i'm sorry for being snappy, i thought you might be the other anon who clearly isn't genuinely interested in this kind of thing. ftr i don't use the asterisk for myself, as i mentioned below, for those who do i've noticed the pronunciation is varied. sometimes the asterisk isn't pronounced at all?? i don't pronounce it myself

yo sorry for jumping in here out of nowhere (i rarely comment on fs anymore but am now reading after DRINKING WITH FRIENDS!) but i see this explanation everywhere and it makes me quite angry.

transgender is an umbrella term. trans is an umbrella term. it has been for years. the asterisk is unnecessary and it irritates me when i see people saying that trans is not inclusive by itself.

trans with an asterisk is something that was invented in relation to internet searches. (you know, like when you search for a file on a computer for example, if you put an asterisk it pulls up many different options.) really it has been around for a much shorter time period than the term transgender itself, which originally encompassed non-binary identities. "trans*" is a relatively new way of saying that non-binary identities are included in a category they have no reason to be excluded from, because "transgender" means that you are crossing the boundaries of gender in whatever established culture you belong to, including everything from transsexual people who are transitioning medically (with hormones/surgery) to habitual crossdressers who have no intention of a medical transition and may or may not experience gender dysphoria.

tldr; the asterisk/snowflake/anus is dumb as fuck and no thank you.

look i dont use the asterisk when referring to myself either and i don't necessarily fit in the gender binary but this is the same kind of deal with bisexual/pansexual identities. some people think it's inclusive and others - generally nonbinary people - don't think it suits them, or have had bad experiences with people not being inclusive with it. even if there's some kind of "hard evidence" or general consensus that certain terms are inclusive, people sometimes find themselves faced with opposition that warrants their personal use of the asterisk. you might think it's an unnecessary addition but tell that to the people who find it necessary for their own description.

lol no.

Re: Confession thread?

Seems a reasonable enough fear on the surface. A lot of the homophobia and transphobia I've encountered seems to come from religion, so it may be more likely that your parents would be accepting of that (which they, not being religious, haven't been told to hate) and perhaps not so much with your religion... eh, everyone's against something. You yourself sounds pretty anti-atheism. Family events must be fun in your house.

I really don't have a problem with atheism. I have a problem with militant atheism and smug self-righteous 'I am better than those stupid religious people' bs.

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see that being much different from the superiority that comes from deeply religious people. Everyone who believes a thing thinks that their thing is the right thing.

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
This. Plus for the most part, smug atheists can be avoided for the most part since most of them are being smug on the internet. Smug religious people are fucking everywhere though both offline and online.

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'd think it's a bit hard to avoid these ones since they're OPs parents, so I can see why they're irritated.

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
That vastly depends on where you live. I meet smug atheists on the internet and IRL more often than smug religious people anywhere.

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Do you feel superior to people who believe in astrology and in fortune telling?

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
op

No, I don't feel superior to other people who are superstitious. I recognize that most people believe in luck and fate to some extent and I don't feel that believing in astrology is vastly different from having a good luck charm, or experiencing a 'miracle', or believing in ghosts, or anything else. I don't think it makes someone inferior to me if they believe in the same kind of shit that the majority of humans throughout time have believed in.

Re: Confession thread?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Yes. Yes, I do. And yet I don't equate people's faith and spirituality with the belief in mysterious future-seeing magics. That would make me a dick, like the OP is complaining about.
