2. I didn't even know any of that existed! I love all three of them so why not try them together. Links?

11. I want to stab him in the face.

30. What a great idea.

14. I never really got into Courage the Cowardly Dog, but now I really wish I could have seen that episode when I was younger. It probably would have made me feel better about myself, since my parents sound an awful lot like yours, Secret-teller. I <3 you.

29. I still jokingly tell people when they ask me what tattoo I would get that I'd get a potato on my foot. And I always think of the teacher with the third ear when I'm going to answer a question in classes. I read them over ten years ago; no other books have kept with me for that long.

Point being: You may be right...

4. Gravitation helped start up the yaoi fandom (and all the nasty stereotypes that came along with it). It IS a classic example of shonen-ai, but that doesn't mean it's a GOOD example.

9. I tend to agree, but unfortunately drabble-length stories are the only ones I have an attention span for, so they're the only ones I end up reading.

19. Me too, kind of... I didn't bother mentioning it to anyone because I dismissed it as one of those impulse pairings that I should just give up on. I'm sure most people would have called me a moron for shipping it anyway, but I expect that for most of my favourite pairings 'cause I'm a bit of a crackshipper.

Then J.K. announced it was canon and I cheered. =]

I'm glad someone said it.

Also, 29

[identity profile] moon-rat.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm about the same age as you and can still recall parts of that book from memory, despite not having read it in years. Good stuff. ♥

14. Cutest secret! :D

22. I always thought of them as having one of those childhood crushes where they show they care by competing with each other.

29. Dude, those books are a gas!

[identity profile] corydrane.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
9. A good written drabble is far better than some lame ass 50,000 word snore fest. Length does not equal quality. BNFs will always circle jerk each other it's what they do. My fandom even made a locked comm specifically for that purpose.

But if the drabbles suck, well then I can't imagine them writing anything worth reading anyways. *shrug*

[identity profile] levikitty.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
4. Classic =/= good.

Yes, Gravitation isn't good series, but it is a classic. Just like how The Scarlet Letter is a classic book, but so many people hate it.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I don't like that book. But I don't hate it--that, I reserve for Gone with the Wind.

There's an orchestrated version of it??? Where?! I love the FFVII soundtrack like nothing else!

Recently, a comment-based discussion has been ongoing between me, someone on my flist, and someone on her flist about just how much we remember about/love these books.

I'm twenty-three years old. The books are brilliant, and I want nothing more than to read them all again, even though they were designed for pre-teens.

I can't find any copies.

More power to you :P

I'm not sure about everyone else but when I think of "classic" shounen-ai I think of angst ridden pretty boys in french boarding schools with lots of unhealthy doses of prostitution and pedophilia. But that's just me.

I hardly think something written barely a decade ago can be considered such a "timeless" classic, especially when it kinda sucked (manhoodness????).
The wonderful fanbase it seems to have garnered can only solidify my assumptions created by (not so) careful examination and experience.

[identity profile] repeatvoffender.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 22, and I just found my old copy of Wayside School, again this summer.
and read it. Three times.

(Anonymous) 2007-11-03 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
So much WORD, I never read drabbles, they're boring and as you said, a waste of space. In fact I never read anything shorter than 2000, anything less is not worth the bother.

(Anonymous) 2007-11-03 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
4 - Dude, don't shounen-ai and yaoi give THEMSELVES a bad name, with all those seme/uke stereotypes and heterosexualized relationships and bullshit? :/

6 - .........oh man I KNOW I've seen at least part of that/those comment thread(s) somewhere, and it's making me NUTS that I can't remember. o_o

9 - Say what you like, there's nothing like a work that gets across such powerful emotion in so few words. Sure, there aren't many that really do that, but those that do? I'll take 'em over long-winded WIPs any day of the week.

12 - Gai/Lee is seriously the ONLY mentor/student pairing in Naruto I will EVER love, because they're just so UTTERLY ADORABLE.

18 - One of the major reasons I'm having trouble getting into the Dr. Who fandom, despite the fact that I really really want to, is that THERE'S JUST SO GODDAMN MUCH OF IT, what with how long it's been going on. I wouldn't even know where to BEGIN. And a lot of the old material really isn't too widely available, so I guess it's easiest for people to start with the new/popular stuff.
Though raging fannits are annoying in any fandom.

26 - Most mentor/student pairings are pretty icky, and Kakashi/any Team 7 is no exception.

28 - CIIIIIIIIIIIIID. ♥ God I love him.

[identity profile] mint-eclair.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
22. So much love. ♥ POKEMON SECRET, FUCK YEAH! The fact that Pearl had some personality made it so much more wonderful. I always imagine Dawn doing something nice and Pearl running away, flustered. The whole, 'Calm one of the two keeps the rowdy one in check'. <3

You should check out some of the adorable fanart for it. BD

That's who I thought he was at first, until I saw the comic thing in the background! I was so confused. ._.;

21. Avatar has a really big fanbase. I should probably join in. (Hm..)

18

[identity profile] carnality.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I really didnt mind this, when I first saw it. It was the overwhelming reaction of YEAH NEW FANS SUCK that really got me sad.

I admit, I'm a new fan. I just got into it recently, when I was visiting my father in England. I've been really interested in seeing the previous doctors but my resources are limited and I dont have the money to spend on boxsets.

I know a lot of new fans are assholes, me included, but dont lump us into one catagory. How about helping out a newbie and being our resource to the older stuff? :|

tl;dr -- Whine less, help new fans that want to get into the Older stuff moar.

I swear we don't all suck. Much.

(Anonymous) 2007-11-03 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
26. Is it sugiocon?? Well, it may not since that is literally tomorrow, and you probably sent this last week. Just wondering though, cause I was going to go but stuff came up.

12

[identity profile] trexaur.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
HI NICOLLE?

18

[identity profile] shobogan.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I can definitely see where you're coming from, but...I don't really see anything wrong with just sticking with the new series, as long as you don't insist that everything before it is crap and doesn't matter.

Some people just don't have the time or inclination to watch the older stories. We can certainly say they're missing out, but I hardly think that's reason to exclude anyone from the fandom.

Now, if you're going to write certain meta and fanfiction and the like, it's certainly a good idea to at least research - the ones who just blow off forty years of history, yes, they can GTFO.

Re: 18

[identity profile] derogative.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
WHY HELO THAR ASH...

You know, it is very hard not to play devil's advocate here and pretend to be a raging fanbrat. ...Well, a different raging fanbrat. :P

With old eps: some of it isn't just time and inclination, either. I know for a while I had a metric fuckton of trouble trying to even FIND episodes online to watch, and I felt like to universe was giving me the finger. Stupid universe.

But yes, yes, research.

... I want a cookie.
