I'm still blown away that NAMBLA is a real thing and not just something South Park made up, to be honest.

The best part of that episode was Mr. Garrison going DAMMIT I'M IN THE WRONG ROOM AGAIN

Well, I still consider Chinatown a damn fine film. Sometimes you just have to accept that your enjoyment of things will be tempered by certain knowledge.

This. I bring up the Chinatown Defense when people beat themselves up about enjoying works by problematic creators. (of course, there are things I can't deal with created by people who are scumbags, but they tend to also be artistically weak, OR it's a case of my not wanting to give money to said scumbags. But when it's a dead guy/someone not involved with the actual production/a work so old that I'm again not funneling my money into a scumbag's wallet, then...)

And Ezra Pound realllllllly hated the Jews.

Still like his poetry, though.

It really bugs me that he had associations with NAMBLA. I like his poetry, even if he does come off as a little manic.

This... is kind of my take on it. He's not going to hurt anyone himself, so take his work on its own merits.

I can't blame you, ever since I learned about J.D. Salinger's obsession with young girls (and those who were barely legal but looked 12 yo like Joyce Maynard) and his shitty, controlling relationships with them, I've been sad. Cliched but I adore Catcher in the Rye. I'm kind of glad I've read all his stuff already.

Even Wikipedia says (with second-hand source) that he wrote he defended them for the sake of free speech.

I loathe the KKK, but I will defend their right to say those loathsome things. That's one of the fundamental rights of US citizens. That's not to say there are no repercussions for what is said (losing a job or whatever), but you can say it without a SWAT team descending on you to take you to a dark, deep dungeon without legal recourse. There are, of course, exceptions to free speech (yelling "fire!" in a crowded theater, for instance), but talking about how "natural" it is for boys to want to be with grown men? I'm shuddering as I type it, but it is protected speech. As long as it *remains* speech.

So, was Ginsberg a pedophile? Or was he, a man that fought against all forms of government oppression and authoritarianism, simply saying he believed they had a right to express themselves?

I'm not giving an answer, because I don't know. I'm just cautioning against kneejerk reactions to "internet factoids".

The KKK is a pretty bad example to use for this since hate speech is not protected speech.

I read a lot of Ginsberg in my youth, so I'd have to say, Yes, it seems he was into minors. He mentioned his attraction to teenaged youths in many poems, so that comes from the horse's mouth. He never mentioned boys, to my knowledge, but if you're me, teens are children. So that's my take on it. Back when I was into his poetry, I would not hear it, made up convoluted excuses for the verses and his association with the group, but now that I'm grown up, I get that his writing was great but that he was pretty skeevy himself.

The dude is dead. He won't benefit from this. You know most creators out there who rose to prominence partly because of their social power/identity have some kind of skeeving/abuse of power going on? The difference is whether we ever hear about it.

Basically throw out nearly everything you own.

Though if it's triggering, I guess it might be quite personal to you.

Bonus: I hope Ginsberg never molested any kids. Talking about your probably involuntary sexual kinks is separate from that, but if you're going to the stage of writing for NAMBLA then I guess you probably don't recognise consent could be an issue, and stay the fuck away from kids or porn involving IRL kids.

Regardless of anything else Ginsberg said or did, the number of people who come out well of the story depicted in that movie is very small. So I'm somewhat confused as to why this is what's changed your mind?
