Favorite DVD commentaries

There was a thread about your favorite gag reels last week, so here's one about my favorite DVD extra.

As seems to be a theme in this community, Leverage goes without saying. Always funny, always educational -- both from a "let me tell you about the thing this episode is about" standpoint and a "here's what you should know about writing/directing/producing a story like this" standpoint -- and frequently insightful.

My favorite is the ones on the Futurama DVDs.

I absolutely love the Clerks commentary. Jay is passed out through most of it and the others tease him for it. Clerks was also a film made from people on an extreme budget and a love for film making.

I also love the Office commentary from season 1-3 (I haven't listened to the others)

It's kind of hard for me to laugh at that stuff given Jason Mewes' huge problems with drug and alcohol addiction.

Not trying to call you out or anything. Just... that dude has had some problems.

I have never watched any! I'll be watching this thread for good ones. But based on GIFs, I like what I have seen of Lord of the Rings.

futurama and pineapple express have funny creator commentary. although it's a shit show now the early SPN DVDs have interesting extras. honestly though i love all creator/actor commentary on DVDs. probably my favorite extra after gag reels.

I always say this in these threads but: the LoTR commentaries.

This is going to surprise absolutely no one but the extended editions of LOTR had the absolute best commentaries. Seriously, I've never seen anything that topped those; the cast was brilliant and had so much fun with them. I could listen to their stories all day.

But Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead had fantastic commentaries as well. Particularly Hot Fuzz; couldn't stop laughing through those. Anytime you get Nick Frost and Simon Pegg together is typically a good time, but everyone else was wonderful as well and the collectors edition had SO many different commentaries. (About five, I think?) Most of which were really interesting or hilarious.

YES! The LOtR commentaries are so awesome. I literally watched each dvd for a solid month, every night, when they first came out. With every commentary, with none, all the extra stuff, all the making-of and how-to and WETA stuff ....everything.

Now i want to do that all over again, heh.

The only one I have trouble listening to on LotR is Richard Taylor, but that's because of his accent. He has a really strong New Zealand accent that just hits right in my auditory uncanny valley. (I'm Australian, the NZ accent is very similar to mine.)

This Is Spinal Tap. The actors do all their commentary in-character and will argue over whether this guy died or not.

I don't listen to DVD commentaries a lot, I find them boring, but I really enjoy the Phineas and Ferb DVD commentaries that the creators do in-character. I wish I could listen to the Leverage ones but the DVDs have never been released here :(

I don't listen to the commentaries too often (though judging from this thread I need to check out the LotR ones) but I've always really liked the Invader Zim commentaries.

Agree about Leverage!

Lord of the Rings was huge for me. The hobbits were particularly funny but they all had interesting anecdotes and insights.

Stargate SG1 was the first DVD set I owned and it set my standards pretty high; pretty much EVERY episode had a commentary, hard to find on a lot of tv box sets, and I liked the variety. Some of them were like lighting guy + sound guy and were very technical and not too interesting to me, but I appreciated that it wasn't just one guy. And Peter DeLuise always cracked me up, omg.

Peter Deluise and Gary Jones (Walter, aka "chevron guy") usually did hilarious commentary, but sometimes it backfired, because there'd be this big emotional moment that I want to know more about, and they're smack in the middle of a poop joke or something.

I love the commentaries and appendices on LotR and The Hobbit EE.

The best commentary track ever is the one for The Day After Tomorrow. The other guy with Roland Emmerich (Mark Gordon?) is hilarious, which makes it far more lively than commentary tracks I've listened to on other Roland Emmerich movies (Independence Day, 2012) where Emmerich has been partnered with someone a lot drier in how they commentate.

Can't believe no one had mentioned Tropic Thunder's commentary. RDJ's character has a line about not breaking character until the commentary is done ... so of course he does the commentary in character. It's hysterical.

I really enjoy Farscape's commentaries. Both in the 'cool stuff about this episode' sens and the 'these people have a lot of fun around each other' sense.

Ocean's Eleven (2001) (I really like the movie, but sometimes I think the commentary is better)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Two Weeks Notice, Love, Actually, Aliens (it's mostly just really informative), Lord of the Rings trilogy, American Werewolf in London (this one is awesome, in my opinion).

Psych usually has pretty good ones. The NewsRadio ones are good, but they seem a little preoccupied by the wardrobe. Leverage. The Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis ones are really uneven (some are soooo boring and others are funny).

Ooo, agree on Atlantis. The ones that include the actors tend to be funny and entertaining but some of the others are quite boring. And I love SGA, so it pains me to say that.

I bought Love, Actually on DVD last year and keep forgetting to listen to the commentary! I'll have to put it in my to-do list app or something.

I think the only DVD commentary I listened to in its entirety was the one for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which I enjoyed

Pirates of the Carribean had a great commentary that greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the movie.
