Honestly, this case horrifies me. A baby growing inside a corpse is pure nightmare fuel. Not beautiful, not proper. Just thinking about it makes me nauseous.

The last thing I want if I die is to be kept artificially alive so that my meat finally has the only use most pro-lifers seem to think a woman's body has when pregnant.

It doesn't help that I'm already child-free because the idea of pregnancy is disgusting to me...but even so, just imagining a child growing in a corpse sounds like the plot to a super violent horror anime or Silent Hill or something. *shudders*

Given that you're so anti-pregnancy, I sincerely doubt that you (or anyone who might be legally empowered to make decisions for you) will ever have to worry about it.

I've heard of parents wanting to get their brain dead/coma children pregnant, though. Now THAT'S horrifying.

Because nobody is ever impregnated without their consent, right?

And there's no such thing as accidents, as all methods of birth control are 100% effective.

I feel the same, except I actually want to have children one day.

If the fetus is developed enough and can be removed from my body in a matter of hours, alright, keep the life support coming, but that fetus is literally growing inside a corpse.

IDK, I'd be up for staying braindead for a bit longer than you. I mean, if I'm pretty much dead at that point, and I wanted the kid, and this was going to be the last thing I put forth onto the world, and said thing would be born healthy, then sure, hook me up. If I've been pregnant for six months and only need two more weeks to increase the fetus's chances of survival from 50% to 90%, I think I'm fine with that, since that hypothetical me will be dead anyway.

Also, it'd be kind of badass to have a kid who's birthdate comes after your death date. I shall always be a bit of Frankenstein at heart. ~~Yes, I know "time of death" is technically after they stop the life support. Don't ruin my not!dream.~~

I think more than the corpse part, what'd get to me would be the hospital bills my family'd be left with. So if it went beyond two weeks, I'd leave it up to them.

But even then I think there's a world of difference between "using my corpse to sprint the last 100 meters to the finish line" and "using my corpse to straggle forward before you've even finished the first lap." Especially in cases like this where the fetus was never going to survive anyway, and - on the miracle chance it did - was going to have innumerable life-debilitating defects.

This. Hook my dead ass up, hell, I might even say go as long as a month IF there's a high likelihood of a favorable outcome, but don't drag things out if it's a lost cause.

A few days would be alright with me too, but a week would already be pushing it. I think most of it comes from the fact that I find the thought of finding out that I was growing inside my mother's dead body completely horrifying. And given the media circus now you know that even if the fetus had been completely healthy that the media wouldn't leave the kid alone, so there wouldn't have been a chance of the child not finding out about it.

You think it would be badass, for me it's sheer nightmare fuel and a one-way ticket to therapy.

Can't speak about the hospital bills as I'm not sure how that works in the US. But do I get that right, the HOSPITAL refused to take the mother off live support AGAINST THE FAMILY'S WISHES and yet the FAMILY has to pay for it?

Ugh, I hadn't thought about the media. That would be annoying. Although I do wonder, if a kid grew up with the stories, would they just internalize it before they really knew the implications and then just go "oh" when they were older? Or would they have a sudden epiphany triggered by some random event?

I guess it does come down to one's personal views on the matter. The more I think about it, the "corpse" part is the thing that disgusts me least about this case, but rather the state/hospital overriding the family's decisions and the fetus not being viable from the get go. But yeah. To one person, it's kind of badass and no big deal, and for another it's nightmare fuel. As long as it stays that person's (and/or family's) choice, I am totally fine with whatever they decide because I totally understand the nightmare fuel even if I'm not affected by it.

I'd like to think that any offspring I'd have would share my viewpoints, but ultimately I have no idea. And I guess I'd like to take my chances and hope that said offspring would lean more towards the nbd camp than the traumatized camp because then at least they would have a choice of how to proceed.

As for hospital bills, I don't know what they're going to do in this instance, but I know in the US if you're having an emergency, someone calls the ambulance, and you're not in a state to refuse - even if you would've normally refused - they charge you several thousand dollars for it. This is slightly different because the family was protesting outright. Though even then, I wouldn't be surprised if the hospital charged them. In that case, the family will probably turn around and sue the hospital/state because we're probably talking about several hundred thousand in bills. And then it'll be up to the hospital/state to either go to court with the claim and make this even more of a media spectacle, or settle it privately for an undisclosed sum.

...Honestly, it made me think of Re-Animator or something. And I love Re-Animator, and stuff that reminds me of Re-Animator. But this is a far cry from the Dr. Pepper clone at our grocery store being called "Dr. West." That is completely harmless. This is just upsetting. D:

Sometimes, there's just some things that English majors need to let go (and I am one, so I speak from experience). Language is fluid and this is by far not the worst example of dictionaries sighing and admitting that improper usage has become accepted.

Next you'll be telling me I have to get "ain't" out of my vocabulary, and saying that word is my God-given right as a Texan, dagnabbit.
