mmmh, I often substitute my headcanon for reality (or, fiction I guess) and I don't care~ yay...

...so details on your idea, the original, etc etc?

Sometimes I kind of wish I could do that. In my head, there is always a distinct difference between my headcanon and the actual canon - probably because I am vehemently against Death of the Author anywhere but in formal, academic works (and even in these it should never be applied sweepingly). I feel like the original source material=authorial intent, to the point where I automatically regard all the extra information provided by the creator as canon.

So, good for you.

Something I've always been curious about, with canon "purists" who disregard other information-- what do you do with things like deleted scenes and the like that end up being cut for time, or to make it under a certain rating, or because the studio/network/whathaveyou insists on it?

I accept it as alternate canon! I love this kind of things. Then I can have two equally valid storylines in my head (okay, maybe one of them is a little more valid than the other; it depends on the creators' motives for cutting the scene out. If they were forced to do it, it's as valid as the end result. If they did it willingly for the purpose of improving the work, it has much less validity) and switch between them however I please.

Sometimes I get confused and think things that happened in fanfic were in canon. It's a little brain-bendy.

Sometimes fan-versions are better, even our own.

Hell, one of my most popular stories is basically a re-write of canon that still fits within the ethos/style of the show. And I feel unashamed saying my version is better.

...granted, the show is Merlin, so that really isn't saying much. But still, I've sometimes had to check back with the show because I wasn't sure whether some piece of background was what I wrote, canon, or headcanon. :P

It's probably too late, but just in case you're tracking:

Huh, so if you involve yourself with fic enough, you start to believe it over canon? That really explains Loki woobie fangirls.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! The whole Draco in Leather Pants thing. I remember somebody complaining about how JKR *RUINED* Draco because he didn't act like he did in her favorite fan fic.

Doesn't everyone do this? I wrote like one BBC Sherlock fic, and it's canon to me now. :D And other people.

Before Harry Potter 7 came out, I was reading a lot of fics dealing with the final battle. After reading the book, I felt like I had just read a really, really bad fic. Other people had written better endings.
