phrases like "money can't buy happiness" and "there's nothing standing between you and your dreams but yourself" or other such motivational/inspirational quotes. My tumblr feed has been overrun with them the past couple days and it annoys me to no end. Because no, money could in fact buy me quite a bit of happiness right now. And there is a lot of things stopping me from my dreams - most of them money related.

I hate that too

People who say that need to punch themselves in the face. It's no different from the bootstraps argument.

Eh, it is though? I mean, it can get really annoying - but it's generally got a completely different intent (and a nicer one) behind it.

Intent doesn't really matter. What matters is the message, that being stuck in a bad situation is your fault, regardless of circumstances outside your control. I don't accept that.

"[T]here's nothing standing between you and your dreams but yourself" pretty much says "If you don't get your dreams, it's because you don't do enough to achieve them." I don't really see how that's any nicer.

Of course, while I recognize that it's a fallacy to say everyone can get everything they want if they just work hard enough for it, I do think there are a lot of people who don't want to work or sacrifice at all for what they want, so none of these phrases, including pulling oneself up by bootstraps bothers me in the grand scheme, only in individual instances.

Agreed. Even if I know the person saying that stuff really does mean well, it still annoys the fuck out of me.

Ah agreed, vainly optimistic but uh I imagine money would buy most people ease of mind, if not happiness.

yep. Money can buy plenty of happiness when you don't have any.

That one is the complete opposite of tiny to me. I have a whole rant for when people bring that crap out.

-shrugs- I like them. I mean, they are pretty stupid, but people are usually trying to cheer someone up when they say it so... Men.

"Just believe in yourself!"

"If you just BELIEVE then the universe will conspire to grant your wishes!"

LOL NO how about you fuck off with that BS from the secret.

I swear most of the people who post those stupid "inspirational quotes" already have plenty of money and happiness, and have never had to fight for anything in their life.

How about that person whose house burnt down? Or the person with terminal illness? Or the kid who grew up in poverty? I guess it's their fault because they weren't believing hard enough!

Those both always struck me as entitled, divorced-from-reality, rich-isms.

And inevitably when someone points out the host of financial/health/societal problems standing in between many people and their dreams, there will be an indignant "Well obviously I'm not talking about those people; stop twisting my words!"

HA! Yes. Money can, in fact, buy a *lot* of happiness, and/or a perfectly delightful facsimile thereof. I'm down with that.

Agreed. My paycheck might not be the best in the world, but it's far from the worst, and it buys me little dosages of happiness every single day.

Ooooh, I would love to say to them "Money can buy some happiness'', and explain to them about it. Chew me out if they like, but do they realize just how important that wad of cash is to a less fortunate person?

Re: The tiny irritating things

I hate the "money can't buy happiness" saying, too. I know what people mean, but you know what? Money could take away the worries about mortgage payments and bills, worrying about when the car will need fixing/replacing and having been financially comfortable I can say with authority that it takes away a LOT of stress about the little stuff and that makes a big difference.

Re: The tiny irritating things

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I remember reading an article about a study that concluded money does buy happiness... up to about US$50,000. The idea is that being able to live in reasonable comfort with a roof over your head and enough to eat AND enough money to feel reasonably secure about these things goes a long way towards making peope happy. Financial stress is real stress. It's only when you have enough money that you don't have to worry about the basics that having additional money is no longer a guarantee of increased happiness.

My grandpa always used to say 'money can't buy happiness, but you can be miserable in comfort'. I kind of like his version better.

"Money may not buy me happiness, but it's a lot more comfortable to cry in a car than on a bike."

I take the position that money may not be able to buy sadness...but it sure helps keep stress, anger, and grief away, which are nearly as good.

If I had a lot of money, I could actually try my hand at some of the jobs that would be dream jobs for me but are known to yield little to no money in reality. So that would be plenty of happiness.

Another thing - but not so minor - in the vein of "nice saying people think are motivational": "There are others who are far worse off than you!"

Yay great, nice to know I can't possibly be depressed because I'm not homeless or fatally ill or starving - that really helps, thanks.
