The moment that I read that note for the first time made my day. I wanted to approve that lady's visa so bad.

But I didn't.

NO I WILL NOT APPROVE YOUR VISA. YOU ARE A WHORE.

Read the Bible.

It needs some polish (and trigger warnings) but it's got some good ideas. I'm not a big fan of song filk but I actually enjoyed Songs of Songs. I was kind of hesitant when it came to the donkey dicks with horse emissions but around the thirtieth time someone "came into" someone else I started to enjoy the pregnancy fetish. A lot of the violence seemed gratuitous but that's easily overlooked as the heroes were typically compelling. I'd give it an eight out of ten.

What do you have against non-Polish people? :-(

oh my gosh suddenly wanting one short polish person to be represented in a book otherwise devoid of polish people is hating on the non-polish ugh wtvs

What about the Scots? There aren't any Scotsmen in it, either, and I don't see you getting upset about that!

I took it as read that Jonji was a big-time crook, the kind of guy who can skate out of being detained as easily as he can hook you up with passports later. Most people you meet are just regular folks whose lives are being irrevocably warped for better or worse by the quick decision you make with that damn stamp.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
This. Plus a number of the people you have to deny can't come back because then leaving was, basically trying to escape from someone.

yep

Jorji was my favorite part of the game, but that one line "I have business in Arstotzka" pretty much confirmed to me that this guy was neck deep in some shady shit.

was gonna say thsst. there are criminals, and they'll figure out a way to game any system. the fact that they csan and more innocent people can't is part of what makes the systemn u nfair,

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
But doesn't the fundamental arbitrariness and randomness contribute to the thematic element? There's nothing about this character that makes him fundamentally more worthy of getting multiple chances, but he does because the system is fundamentally corrupt, because of circumstances out of your control.

(Should probably say - haven't actually played the game, just like talking about the banality of evil)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, a Papers, Please! secret!

And yeah I agree with the anon above -- Jorji is a real corrupt crook (IIRC I did catch him running drugs at least once) who knows how to work the system, who to bribe, and has connections and pull to function within it. Whereas most people are just regular guys who are trying to escape from a bad situation and don't have his savvy.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
He's a well connected drug smuggling criminal. Part of the point, I think, is that he could be an evil smirking jerk, but he's not. He's a 'bad guy' but your character gets to like him. And whether you let him by with bad documents or not, he still respects you because your just doing what you need to get by.

The whole game is about making you make hard choices and showing how unfair things can be for a 'normal' person.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I came to like him a lot, personally. I got weirdly obsessed with this game for awhile and played it over and over again to see what different outcomes I could get. No matter what you do with Jorji he is always friendly and respectful, and he's never bitter when you turn him away, just 'okay, I'll get the papers I need' etc. Of course, that is probably fueled partly by the fact that he's getting all this stuff illegally anyway, but still.

Also, there's something endearing about his handmade passport...
