I'm sick of Irene AND Moriarty showing up in every adaptation.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? How come?

Because other characters exist too? Irene only existed in one story, Moriarty in two if you count The Empty House, and there are a lot more characters and storylines equally awesome that people seem to ignore.

Well, in three technically -- he never appears, but he figures pretty heavily in The Valley of Fear.

Oh I see. The Valley of Fear is actually the only Holmes story I haven't read (I couldn't find it for ages) so I didn't know that, sorry.

Okay, so Moriarty is a pretty prominent character, but still not so important that other villains should get ignored in his favour.

I think it's just that Moriarty, Irene Adler (and Hound of the Baskervilles) are the most well known characters or stories from the books. If you actually read the books, there are stacks of fantastic characters. Maybe with so many Holmes remakes going on, we'll get to see more of the other great characters.

If you actually read the books

Exactly. Shouldn't anybody looking to make an adaptation actually read the books?

I'd think so. Maybe the people making the adaptations are assuming the majority of viewers won't have so they should stick to the most well known characters?

They might also be assuming Holmes fans will check out any new adaptations anyway so they don't need to cater to people who know Violet Hunter, Elsie Cubitt, Charles Milverton etc. were also in the books.

Because:

A) the adaptations never ever get Irene right

B) Moriarty IS THE NOT THE ONLY FUCKING VILLAIN FOR FUCKS SAKE

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT:

1) not even Granada?

2) Fair point

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
1) yeah, that's the one exception.

Well, yeah, Granada got her right (and did so damn well), but I don't think it needs to be a right-down-to-the-exact-canon-details adaptation in order to be a in-character adaptation, if you know what I mean, and it's kind of a shame we've never had her take a somewhat expanded or altered role in an adaptation without being in love with Holmes or vice versa or a criminal.

Agreed.

1) Ah, yeah, I was gonna say, imo Granada made Irene completely awesome.

I had this discussion again just a few hours ago. She could have been a hacker/cat burgler, fahgawdsake.

(River Song? Vash? Gloria Red Dorian? :p)

Once upon a time, I had honestly expected BBC to have her be some kind of hacker. It seemed like a logical, 21st century way for a person to get a hold of information someone might worry about her using as blackmail without her actually being a blackmailer.

Exactly. The whole lesbian dominatrix thing just seemed like ... arbitrary fanservice. (But then again, that was the ep with Sherlock in a sheet. :p)

Pretty much. I am no more sick of Irene than I am of Moriarty.

Actually, I think I'm more sick of Moriarty (but that might just be bc I really disliked the BBC version.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Same, but I disliked their Adler more - not because she's female but because of what the writers did to her characterisation.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I HATE the BBC version of Irene with the hatefire of a hundred hatesuns, but I'm still a lot more sick of Moriarty than I am of her.

And I still watch the show. Go figure.
