I wouldn't really call that inconsistent? He was also tricked by Moriarty the first time he saw him (Jim from IT). He knew she was a liar but I highly doubt, "Trained assassin" would be anywhere on the list of what she may be lying about.

Hell, I am more surprised that Mycroft did not know.

I agree. The vast majority of people who lie about things (sometimes quite innocuous things) don't turn out to have stolen their identity from a gravestone. It was far more likely that she'd be lying about having no family or being single or something.

He saw Jim for five minutes at most. He knew Mary long enough to help plan the wedding. Not really the same thing.

Yes to this, but at this point I'm hoping there's either a long game being played or Tumblr hasn't giffed enough of the show so I've missed something.

But nothing even pinged on his radar about Jim. He knew that Mary was lying about something. But again, most people don't think TRAINED ASSASSIN when they know someone is lying.

But he completely did know about Mary. Well, not completely - but he had a good idea right from the first time they met.

I watched ep 1 of series 3 again because that was the big thing that annoyed me about it. When Mary said she liked Sherlock, my first reaction was - what sane woman would like Sherlock? That's completely unbelieveable.

And yes, on a re-watch, Sherlock picked that up immediately.

If he didn't go away and research her immediately after he deduced she was a 'liar' and a woman strangely comfortable with violence and danger, that it would be extremely out of character for him. Everything else was just confirmation after that - he didn't reveal it until ep 3 as he didn't want to upset John.

As for Mycroft, that's a better question. Did he know about Mary long ago or did he just not care? Perhaps Mycroft even planted or nudged her?

I think Sherlock was more upset about John being mad. And he was happy that Mary was trying to help him out.

Did you watch it again since you saw ep 3? Because that's what I assumed the first time I saw ep 1/2, that Sherlock was just relieved that John would still work with him because Mary said yes.

But then I watched it the second time around he and saw it differently. It very much looked like Sherlock worked Mary out early, then gleefully knew for most of the series.

I watched those two episodes last night, and I agree wholeheartedly with you.

I haven't seen the new episode yet so I just spoiled myself completely here, but it seemed very much like he figured her out when they first met, and right away - he just didn't say anything (whether to spare John or for some other reason). I figured it would be used as a plot device later.

The problem was that the first time I watched episode 1 & 2 it just felt like bad writing. Why was Mary so accepting of Sherlock? Why was he so accepting of her? Why did Mary have all these superpowers (knowing codes, weird memory skills)? It seemed like the writers were pandering to make her likeable.

I almost wish I'd spoiled myself because it annoyed me so much. The one thing I expected from BBC Sherlock was intelligent writing.

I do still think it was a bad writing decision to have that build-up for 3 whole episodes before the payoff - not because viewers couldn't take it, but because it made the writing look irretrievably bad in the run-up.

Also agreed - especially with episode 2.

I think the main reason I was able to catch it so easily is because I've been snowed in for four days and basically marathoned Sherlock over and over so it was all fresh from the beginning. I noticed a very slight hesitation in his brain "check-list" when he looked over Mary the first time, and it was like he forced himself to stop when he got to a certain point, something he hadn't really done before as far as we viewers know.

It seemed odd and out of character, even if he was trying to spare John's feelings, because he's admitted himself that he doesn't exactly have the ability to stop himself from saying hurtful things to people (even if not in so many words). I can also understand Sherlock's worry that John would leave him after the marriage, but that still doesn't explain why he was suddenly so accepting of her when he's usually so aloof with everyone else.

And yeah, her abilities and immediate acceptance of Sherlock in return were weird, too. Sure, she may have just liked him to please John, and that would have been cool of her. But the way she just immediately jumped to his defense after coming back from the dead was very fishy indeed. They had never met before!

Annnd...I have not had anyone else to talk with about any of this, so you were my ear there. Sorry.

I agree. My first thought was that Sherlock was blinded by his affection for John and just assumed that anyone he loved was trustworthy, but it's a pretty weak explanation. idk, most of the latest season was a disappointment tbh

Thing is Sherlock wasn't a fool. When he first sized up Mary the word that popped up was "Liar." Sherlock knew she was hiding something but who is going to think "government assassin" when they look at someone? At least Moriarty left behind little breadcrumbs of clues to pick up. Not to mention that Sherlock had been lying to John for two years about him being dead. Can you imagine John's reaction to Sherlock going, "Your bride to be is a liar. She is not who she is." Yeah, that will get John to snuggle up to Sherlock really fast.

Moffat already established that Sherlock would. But he probably forgot that he'd used that particular gimmick.

Moffat also had the scene where Irene being naked meant that Sherlock couldn't read ANYTHING about her, which also makes no sense.

EXACTLY! Because I am in no way in shape or form Sherlock and I could have deduced something about Irlene from seeing her naked. Does she have any scars? Are they surgical? If she has no scars, meaning no surgery, you could deduced that she has a medical history of being very healthy and would be harder to search for through medical records. Also, no surgical scars could mean seeing her means she has never altered her appearance. So if there is a criminal file out there with her name and face, it's going to match how she looks like now. Are her nails professionally done or do they look like she did them herself (having one hand done nicely while the other hand, slightly off meaning she used her non-dominant hand to apply nail polish.)If she did them, herself, you can deduce which is her dominant hand. Does she color her hair? (Do the drapes match the carpet. Does she even have carpeting. This could tell someone about her grooming habits.) And so on and so forth.

In short, I agree with you. That scene did not make any sense.

She had a job that involved sex, and possibly had nude pictures of herself on her Web Site. And she knew he wasn't a priest, a fact he realized by the time he tried to "scan" her. So the fact that she'd walk into a room naked probably didn't tell Sherlock anything he didn't already know.

Sherlock grilled all the people going to the wedding, including children, for goodness' sake. Yet despite seeing 'liar' when he looked at Mary, he never questioned anything about her, just accepted her? As John's WIFE? I can't buy it. It makes no sense at all. So yeah, OP, I agree with you.

Okay, this isn't exactly relevant to the secret, but I find that shot of her creepy as fuck. She's a beautiful woman, so why'd they make her look like a monster?
