J. K. Rowling

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else heard about this supposed interview where she claims to regret having paired Ron and Hermione? Because I'm feeling very "wtf" about it, in so many ways.

I laughed when I heard that she said Ron and Hermione will need therapy. Oh no! Not therapy! Relationships aren't supposed to take work!

MTE, that made me go "Pfft." People are not perfect, neither are relationships; plus, the majority of the characters in the HP series would need therapy for reasons not involving romance.

I was skeptical, but its now made it to Entertainment Weekly and the New York Times. So it seems legit. The Potter fandom is predictably exploding.

It made me sad. :< Thankfully, my tumblr dash has been clear of wank.

I'm curious about how pairing Hermione and Ron was wish fulfillment for her.

Re: J. K. Rowling

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ron was supposedly based on a man she used to have a relationship with, so the impression I got was that it was wish fulfillment in the sense of that relationship working out.

In a 2002 interview (I think it was on A&E) she said that hermione had a lot of basis in herself as a child and that Ron was based (to an extent) on her best friend Sean Harris (who was also in the interview. they looked kind of cute together tbh)

Ever since I heard the news, I've felt like I've been in a HP time warp. The shipping wars of H/H, H/G, and H/R are exploding once again.

Way to beat a dead horse, JKR, you devious woman you.

Super late, but I so totally agree.

Re: J. K. Rowling

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious how the actual published interview will pan out, since I agree it's very wtf. Luckily I seem to have a sensible dash that isn't really wanking, just some disappointment about JKR continuing to flog the dead horse and reblogging rather hilarious posts about other authors 'revising' their works. My favourite so far is the Jane Austen.

Re: J. K. Rowling

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I almost think the interview's going to end up being way different from what leaked from it. I heard that the wording, at least, is much different in that it implies Emma Watson herself wished it had been H/Hr, not R/Hr.

Re: J. K. Rowling

(Anonymous) 2014-02-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Watch the real interview say NOTHING to the effect of "I regret pairing Ron and Hermione and think Hermione should have gone out with Harry instead". I'd put good money on it.

I shipped H/HR hardcore back in the day and I'm still already tired of the arguments being revived on both ends.

Agreed. Why does it matter? I ship what I do, canon is what it is, and shipping doesn't have to have anything to do with canon. I honestly couldn't care less.

I believe her saying that in hindsight, she wouldn't have made them a couple. What's really bothering me is how many news stories are headlined with "JKR says that Harry and Hermione should have gotten married". Then the article talks about the R/Hr thing and doesn't mention anything about Harry. Which is making me side-eye all of this even though it does come from an official source.

I was like "whut" and then decided not to read it. I'm really sick of this extra-canonical interview stuff. Wait a decade, lady. Then I think there'll be enough distance between the work and your comment for it to not cause a shitstorm.

I completely disagree with her comments. last night I was actually really upset and thought "thanks for reminding me" when I saw this thread, but I think I'm okay now. she's wrong in my opinion. das fine. I can pretend the interview never happened.

Here's the thing.

Twenty, thirty, years from now when we start downloading the novels directly onto the flash storage of the fifth and sixth generations to read Harry Potter, what Rowling said in an interview won't matter, and what fans argued about on media formats that don't exist won't matter either.

I went on the HP tag last night on tumblr, and yeah, people were freaking out. Lots of "I SHIPPED IT FOR 13 YEARS OKAY YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND MY JOY" or "DON'T TOUCH ME RIGHT NOW MY HEART IS BROKEN".

I mostly enjoyed it for the jokes people were making.

Based on what I read, it seems like she's as regretful about the portrayal of the relationship as the relationship itself, in that she sees their relationship as not necessarily the best or healthiest. Or that it was the wish-fulfillment aspect itself which makes her regret the relationship.

But then, a while back she outright said the relationship between George Weasely and Angelina Johnson - Fred's twin and girlfriend - was pretty unhealthy, especially given their son was named Fred, so I'm not sure why the idea of some of her characters having a potentially unstable relationship now would bother her.

I kind of agree. I always thought Hermione/Krum was infinitely more healthy than any of Ron and Hermione's interactions. I still like Ron though.
