people like you are why I am too afraid to ever ask for donations or payment for commissions, etc; and the result is that I will have to end my webcomic because I don't make any money at it and need to spend that time on money-making ventures.

No, don't be afraid to ask for donations or offer commissions! People will be assholes no matter what, but they're far less bitchy when they aren't ~forced~ to pay (in their minds), while the people who want to help will have a way to do it. At least quietly put up a PayPal button or something before you end it.

If people want your art, it is worth money.

Full stop.

You can create free content for funsies if you want to, but you also have every right to charge money for commissions. You have the right to ask for donations (plenty of people do without there being compensation for them). If people like your art, it is worth something, and even if one entitled prick whines, it's just as likely that other people will go, "Oh, artist-I-like is selling things? I WANT THOSE THINGS!"

It's scary as hell to put a price on a commission, because we're always just so thrilled that people are even looking at us and liking our art. It gets easier each time. It takes practice. That's a weird thing to say, but it does. It takes practice not to undervalue your art, it takes guts to put a price tag on something for ten bucks more that you think its meager worth is, until you find people who are more than willing to give you what you asked. You just have to ask.

Good luck, anon.

I work in an industry in which the only charge that the client isn't able to refuse is that for our time and effort. Ou teachers told us over and over "Do not be afraid to charge for your work; your time is just as important as theirs is." They're paying you for a skill that they might not have.

Think of someone paying you as you might think of someone saying "I like your art; can I do your laundry/buy you dinner/clean your windows?" They're saying "I like what you do and I want to do something so that you can have more time to continue making this beautiful thing."

I feel weird charging to hem people's pants, because it's literally the easiest sewing I can possibly do. But it's something they can't do themselves and are willing to pay for. I probably charge less than they'd pay, but I don't want to go crazy and it's usually just friends or friends of friends. Don't feel bad charging for something you can do that someone else can't.

Hemming pants is the difference between having to get something custom or buying something off the rack for me. If it costs less than the difference between getting something custom made and whatever I bought off the rack, it's totally worth the price to me.

... I live in a country where you usually go to a store to get your pants hemmed though so I might be biased?

Put up a commissions button. A lot of my favorite comic authors have, and I (and many others) have honestly never minded. It's your work and your time and your effort, and you have the right to make money off it. My only regret is usually that I can't afford to get commissions off all the people I'd like, though I have paid for a couple, and they are seriously wonderful. Heck, if one of my favorite webcomics would start again and all I had to do was buy a commission, I'd do it like, yesterday.

So, um. Try it, anon, okay? Sure, it might not pan out, but you never know. And it can't hurt.
