There are plenty of reasons not to get a sitter for a newborn. Implying that mothers with newborns should just Stay Home and Be a Good Mom is kinda shitty imo (basically saying you think they should be houselocked for weeks on end).

How is it "potentially not good for the kid"? And how is it rude as long as your kid is silent? Is it just one of those "ewwww, how dare people expose me to yucky babies" things?

Taking your newborn, still-developing infant to a loud-ass movie theater isn't exactly good for them whether they're silent or not.

Right? I'm pretty surprised at the number of people in this thread that don't know loud noises are bad for babies. X Men does not outrank your kid's needs, OP.

DA, How is that ridiculous? As an adult I've seen small kids at movies that made MY ears hurt or that had scary stuff that made ME jump. I'm not saying this is true for every film, but surely this can have impact on a small child.

You do realize that infants have to leave the house eventually, right? The parents could have to take them to daycare or shopping or to the doctor. They could even encounter loud noises along the way or in their own home! Personally, I wouldn't take a newborn or a baby to a movie just because I don't go to movies too often, but I wouldn't begrudge a parent who needs to get out of house taking their older baby to the theater... as long as they take care of the baby's needs.

It's the first few weeks that are problematic. For the first ~2 weeks after birth, babies still tend to be an a 'womb-like' state (not a professional term, just what my mother explained it to me as) - their immune system is still reeling from the baby no longer being connected to the mother via umbilical cord, and no matter how loud the mother's environment was, in-the-womb is a hell of a lot quieter than out-of-the-womb.

So after about 2 weeks or so, the baby would be fine, but yeah, first 2 weeks? I'd be worried about a newborn in the vicinity of those kinds of speakers, too.

Well yeah, I'd hope know one would take a newborn to a theater. That's dumb. Older than a month I think would be fine.

I'm not saying to shelter your baby or keep them in a bubble, I just don't understand taking a week-old infant to a movie theater. Sure, take them to a theater when they get a little older, but there are just some places where newborns do not belong. There's a difference between hearing a loud noise when out driving or at home and blasting your poor baby's eardrums for at least 90 minutes.

Okay, I missed where OP said the baby would be less than a week old. I agree that it's dumb to take a newborn to a theater.

I'm a fully-grown adult and I can't even go see movies in theaters these days without needing earplugs to keep my ears from hurting from the volume.

Babies are not pets or accessories. They are fucking inconvenient. Anyone who chooses to have one should be prepared to deal with the fact that it is indeed a full-time job in the beginning and do what's best for the human being they have chosen to create, even if it's no fun for them. Not to mention that taking the newborn to a theater likely isn't going to turn out to be as much fun as it sounds or particularly good for a sleep-deprived new mom, either.

How would you like it if you were still getting used to being out of the womb, you had no reasoning skills or ability to grasp what was going on around you, no way to communicate except crying, no way to leave under your own power, and somebody took your ass into a place full of strange smells, flashing lights and very loud unfamiliar noises for several hours? I bet you'd say, "WHAT THE FUCK, DUDE!" which is exactly what a crying newborn in a theater is doing.

It's not just rude to other moviegoers, it's rude to the kid. If you're lucky enough to have one who's chill about it, that doesn't necessarily mean they're enjoying the experience, just that they can deal with it.

I understand you want to go see a movie, especially if you've been cooped up during the last few weeks of your pregnancy. No one can fault you for that. But you've just made a new little human and that baby's needs and wants outrank yours for the time being.

I agree. Movies are too loud for little babies. Even when my daughter had gotten a little older, loud noises terrified her. She spent the beginning of my brother's wedding reception out in the courtyard as far away from the building as she could get sobbing because the loud music physically hurt her (at about four). And then we left because I love my brother but my baby was losing her mind. I know that not all children are as bothered by noise as my daughter was, but I think most movies are too loud for little babies.
