Re: Stupidest Thing You've Ever Hear Out of a Doctor

Doctors in Japan pretty much sucked. They would prescribe pills for anything and everything, even if they didn't know what was wrong - an experience that the doctor was blatantly clear with me. He basically said, "You're fine, these symptoms that you've had for weeks are no big deal. They'll go away. Here's a prescription."

I was also really disenchanted when a nurse (in America) asked me the typical pre-doctor questions, such as do you feel safe, are you sexually active, etc. Then, the next question was "do you participate in bisexual practices." I kind of stuttered, like, I am bisexual, why is that a question. She kind of jumps and then says bisexuals are at more risk for blahblahblah. I was pretty offended, because I'm monogamous and don't even date often, not very sexually active especially for my age group, but suddenly having had sex with a guy and a girl was a health risk? What? I don't know if that question is typical, but ugh.

I'm in America and I've never gotten that question, so that seems a little suspicious to me.

I'm in America and never gotten that question either. If it happens again complain about it. That nurse shouldn't be doing that.

I'm glad to know it isn't normal... that appointment was only like, three years ago (because of moving to Japan, I haven't been to an American doctor since), so I don't know how that happened. Some weird "gays have diseases" thing? But I can't imagine a nurse would just make up her own questions to ask... if it happens again, I'll definitely say something.

Hmm, I know a while ago they used to deny gay people the ability to donate blood because they "have an increased chance of carrying hiv/aids" but I don't think they still do that.

Maybe your provider was of a similar mindset?

Nurses have been known to go off track... but most likely the leading physician at whatever place you went to was old school and set the standard.

Gays are still prohibited from donating blood here in the US. And with a bunch of conservative pricks at the Red Cross in charge, that's not likely to change anytime soon.

Seriously?

That's dumb as shit. Are they afraid they're gonna get gay cooties from gay blood? HIV and Aids are no longer diseases only in the gay community. It can happen to anyone. Better for them to require a passed test from donators saying they're clean of all diseases. Ugh.

I'm afraid so. The Red Cross voted down an effort to change the rules last year and it likely won't come back up again for at least another decade.

Kind of telling that our attitudes toward gay marriage are progressing faster than some our medical community's attitudes towards our blood supply and AIDS.

Well, let's just admit America's medical community is fucked up top to bottom in a lot of different respects.

It's not just America, Germany has the same stupid rule.

Point of information, HIV/AIDS was never only in the gay community.

They test all blood for the spectrum of viruses and deficiencies, anyway, so why they would continue this ridiculous policy is beyond me.

It's also a rule in Cananada.

Well, yes, but it was in higher numbers, wasn't it? (Didn't stay that way for long, but yeah.)

I pretty much agree with that.

Really? ...huh.

Certain types of sex are considered high-risk behaviour; various STDs are more easily spread via unprotected anal sex because the likelihood of minute tears is higher than during PIV sex. In Australia the question is "are you a man who has had anal sex with another man/are you a woman who has had anal sex with a man who has anal sex with men", last I knew.

I'm in America, and even when visiting a gynecologist in a situation where I was supposed to report my sexual history and practices, I wasn't asked about "bisexual practices". When my nurse-practitioner brought up sexual risks, it was a general "these sexual acts/practices lead to higher risks for STDs/certain STDs" (i.e. anal sex often leads to tearing that leads to a much higher risk for things like HIV). No association with a specific orientation or gender/sex identity. Hell, even when discussing birth control options, it was things like "this method really depends on monogamy" vs "this one is good for people who are forgetful", etc.

I'd definitely find that sort of questioning rather suspect. If you ever get that again, I'd suggest seeing if there is a way you can speak up on the matter.
