Same. She just lacks...substance, for lack of a better word.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
She's utterly boring and so perky-perfect that all her flaws are presented as cute character traits.

I'm a casual watcher and tbh I can't tell the difference between her and Clara because they look so similar

That is Clara. Do you mean Amy? Amy's the redheaded one.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Um, she IS Clara? Which would be why she looks like Clara.

I actually really like her. Though, I think her Dalek alternate was far more interesting as a character.

I enjoy her personality, but I hate her backstory so really I am pretty meh on her whole character.

I felt that way about Amy when she first appeared. Loved Rory, Loved River, started loving Eleven via Matt Smith's adorable interviews pre - S5; but Amy left me cold. I started liking her better as time went on, but honestly, I was more sad at Rory and River's final scenes than I was Amy's in S7.

I think it's because she tends to be more a plot device than an actual character? I don't know. That was my feelings on her, though. It's hard to care about the MacGuffin.

Same. I just.... I always feel like she's not actually a companion. We don't know why the Doctor's interested in her. We know almost nothing concrete about her (that whole 'she's everywhere!' thing really just confused the crap out of me) like what's real and what's timey-wimey.
And I also know almost nothing about her as a character. I feel like I missed the episodes where she got her character development, because I have no attachment to this chick. She's given the Doctor pep talks the last few episodes, she's cried her tears and said meaningful shit... and for me it's just like a stranger walked in and said those things. I was like who is this and why are we listening to her.
TBH I really hope she doesn't last. Nothing against the actress, but her writing has been Awful.

I can't say I dislike her, I'm just indifferent. I almost wish we were getting a new companion and I feel terrible about it because I'm sure the actress is a lovely person and I don't want her fired, but... Everything about the way she's written is so underwhelming. Maybe the show will do a better job with her this coming season.

i feel the same. except i just hope they get a new companion instead. :(

I could NOT STAND the Dalek version of her, manic pixie and everything UGH. The Christmas version wasn't much better. I don't mind Clara so much by contrast, she's quite pleasant, but I feel her substance just slips out of my grasp when I try to get a hold on her as a person.

Hmm writing hmm.

Also. (Oddly, I liked her as Dalek Souffle Oswin, but as Clara .... nope nope nope. I've tried to figure out why, and I just can't.)

Bonus odd: Every time I've seen Jenna interviewed I thought she was adorable.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Because she's a substance-less Mary Sue who we're supposed to think is wonderful and perfect because the Doctor comes running to rescue her from her boring life whenever she calls? Which is not the fucking point of being a companion!

Okay. End rant. Sorry, I just don't like that they set up this whole thing with 10 where the Doctor needs a companion as balance (and similar with 9) and all of a sudden he's fine running around without one AND they get this whole 'have your cake and eat it too' thing. It just feels like bad fanfic.

End rant. Really this time.

The writing for her has not been very good.

But I find Jenna SO charming that I can't help but like Clara.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I just can't with her.

The only other companion I've hated was Martha. I've put that down to the fact that I was grieving the loss of Rose because I was fine with her by the time she appeared in Torchwood.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Dalek!Clara came off as manic pixie girl, though consider what the Eleventh Doctor acts like I wouldn't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I actually really felt like I would've liked the Christmas special Clara if things with her had been more paced out, but no, she's squeezed into a special to give the Doctor this catalyst to essentially go hunting for the companion he can let die and still go back to and that just sort of screwed his whole relationship with companion!Clara in a way I didn't like. He wonders if she is a "trick" or a "trap" for him at one point and that just... turned me off big time because it really does seem to paint her as wish fulfillment for him and his issues with outliving his companions and how Moffat's been using her. I haven't seen certain specials like Day of the Doctor/Time of the Doctor yet though, so maybe I've missed something good. But I think the big issue is that she was set up as a puzzle for the doctor and a plot device before her own life as a person.

(Also, the plot device didn't particularly make sense to me? I know timey-wimey logic and all, but it just... since that was caused by the Doctor defeating the villain in the special in the first place, why did she appear in the special? Or why didn't the villain appear twice?? The whole cause-and-effect sort of got lost on me.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like in the most recent season, she was just a plot device. Hopefully, in the upcoming season, we'll see the real her and it will be interesting.

She doesn't bug me, I'm just meh about her

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
QEKK SHE HAS AFORE HEAD AND WAT IT FIT HTI ME HER YOU GO FS

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
So, my running theory is that part of the reason I dislike her is she basically co-opted Eleven's relationship with Amy. Thing is, each companion has a different sort of relationship with the Doctor. Rose is different from Martha who is different from Donna who is different from Amy (who is different from Rory and River). Rose is more mentor-protege hot-for-teacher kind of thing, Martha obviously is a companion response to Rose, Donna is more best buddies keeping each other in check, and Amy is guardian-ward.

I feel like Clara doesn't really have Amy's personality, but she does have her relationship with the Doctor, so every scene they interact with I expect to see the emotional connection that was built up over time with Amy but I just see Clara.

She also doesn't really have a personality. Her trait is 'feisty'. That's really it. I don't know if I could tell you anything is in or out of character for her. By extension, she has no flaws, either.

So she comes in is 'the impossible girl' (which I found just annoying anyway--I'm tired of companions being THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON EVER", all but Martha were!), saves the Doctor from every scenario imaginable (giving her a way too sudden importance in his timeline and story) without justifying her presence and having all of the Doctor's love and affection (with no River to siphon off).

I get that. She's just kind of bland. I hope she gets better with Capaldi.
