How much of a challenge is it to pick up an instrument for the first time at 30? Never played anything before... and one day I think to myself... I should buy a boat banjo.

I looked around a bit online, then looked around a bit in stores, aaand the one I want has to be ordered, so I can't just compulsively jump into this anyway.

Depends on the instrument. Kids will always pick it up more quickly, but my mom managed to teach piano to people older than 30.

While, I don't have that much experience with instruments, learning to do anything well will be a challenge because it takes hours upon hours of effort, experimenting, and challenging yourself.

If you're up for that and can motivate yourself to do that, I'd say go for it. Just make sure you'll have a sustained interest in it before starting.

It doesn't have to be serious thing, though, and there's plenty of different things you can do motivate yourself to practice.

Before you spend the money on the banjo, check to see if there's anywhere you can take lessons nearby. Go take a few lessons. Find out if you like playing. I know from experience, string instruments will cut your fingers, so be prepared for that. If you decide, after a couple of lessons, yes, you do want to do this, then go ahead and purchase your banjo.

I'm looking into lessons. One of the places I went to didn't sell or teach banjo, but they knew a guy who knew a guy, and took my name and number to see if they could get me in contact with him. I don't know yet if they are the "use our equipment and learn" type lessons or "bring your instrument and a number 2 pencil" type (which I have seen ads for and always confuses me).

Good luck, then! I love the banjo. I had one for years, but never did anything with it, it just hung on the wall and looked neat.

All I can think about the number 2 pencil is standardized testing, but there also might be a fingering sheet you're given.

Thanks!

my sister bought my 47-ish (lolidk)-year-old mum a banjo for christmas! I don't think it's ever too late if it's something you really want to try.

If you're doing it for fun, then the main challenge is obtaining said instrument and finding the time to play with it. If you can afford it and you want to do it, then go for it. Doing your research about the best banjo suited to a beginner is a good idea, though. Good luck!

The best thing would be to find a friendly teacher willing to give you a few lessons on an instrument so that you can a) decide if it's really for you and b) get a feel for what you really want in an instrument. Because the most attractive instrument aesthetically might be not the best for the sound you want, or the type of pieces you want to play; ideally, you could get somebody in the know to go shopping with you so that you get the instrument best for you to play and not the best one that'll look great hanging on your wall and do wonders for the salesperson's commission.
