I've never liked reading female characters either. Just doesn't interest me much. I think I got turned off at a young age when every single female character, in the end, turned out to be beautiful even if they were introduced as plain. Since I'm not the most attractive nut on the tree I suppose I just couldn't identify and I always felt betrayed somehow that only pretty people can have adventures. Since I'm not a guy, I don't care much about how they look I suppose and can enjoy them for themselves.

Too late now to change my ways.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, no.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me, but...you don't like reading female characters because they might be prettier than you?

For the love of...

NAYRT

OP was bothered by the apparent message that "only pretty people can have adventures" or are worth writing about.

Reading comprehension isn't really your strong suit, is it?

Are you Reading Comprehension Anon now?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Are you upset that someone is stealing your shtick?
caecilia: (heart shades)

[personal profile] caecilia 2014-02-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
She better not be. Getting upset about people stealing my shtick is my shtick.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-02-12 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Do you even know what schtick is about?
caecilia: (pose as a team)

THAT'S IT, CHARD. I'M STEALING YOUR STICK!

Casting aspersions on other people's intelligence seems to be yours.

But she doesn't hate all pretty characters. She only hates pretty female characters. And she hates them because they're prettier than she is.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
NO hate involved. Just no interest. I'd like to read about someone like me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of those girls who call every pretty feminist they see a slut.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
What is this? Prettiness privilege or something? Way to be understanding DB.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
For the love of fuck, learn to read.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a tall (really tall, over six feet), athletic gal who used to be overweight. I'm not pretty nor charismatic. I love reading about female characters like me, but most of the female protagonist I find are this tiny, fragile, beautiful person. You now what? I don't hate those characters, and reading about them didn't turn me off of every single female character ever.

I think you got serious issues, both with self-esteem and internalised misogyny. I really suggest you seek counselling.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
If she was black and you told her to get over wishing that every character she read about wasn't white so she could have someone to identify with there would be a different reaction. There is so much shaming of people who are unattractive it's sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
And there's shaming of people who aren't smart, or who misunderstand something that they've read ("lol lol reading comprehension lol lol"), or who smell weird, or who are untalented, etc etc.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
You are equating people who are not good looking to smelly, no-talent dumbasses. Cool beans anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you have a problem with smelly, no-talent dumbasses?

It's some people's fault for being smelly, but not all, and it's definitely not a person's fault if s/he's talentless and/or dumb. Why do you think that it's okay to look down on someone for lacking a certain amount of intelligence or for not having any talent?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
OH NO YOU DIDN'T just equate one person's insecurity issues with racism. Hmmm, let me guess which race you are.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
How you look influences a great deal of your life. Whether you are very short or tall, obese, have a disfigurement or are even just unattractive in general you will be treated different than if you are a mainstream attractive human being. It seems to be a human trait to not value "the other" but it does affect many people. Not such a far reach to say that people who are not attractive feel many of the same feelings in society that someone who has experienced discrimination because of their race or gender. If you can't empathize with this, it could be because you have no experience with being shunned for your looks, denied a job because of your weight, teased for having "cooties" when you were a child and other things that can scar you psychologically. Please be understanding. Please.

I don't remember a learning about the enslavement of ugly people in history class, so yeah, it is a far reach.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think so. The feelings of ostracism and "otherness" engendered are the same. I'm talking about the current day and the internalized feelings of the person who experiences such discrimination and abuse. Even here, in fandom, where you'd think people would be understanding about how horrible this can be, how a child who experiences bullying in school for their looks can carry the scars inside of them the rest of their life, there appears to be no sympathy, empathy or understanding. Truly sad.
