Spoilers for Due South

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
If only Sherlock was Constable Benton Fraser, and John Watson was RayK. They could ride off into the sunset together, although not on a dog sled I imagine. Paul Gross (Fraser) became one of the writers and producers for the last two seasons and knew about the slash fanzines. Lo and behold he gave many what they wanted. But very few shows go there, and BBC Sherlock will never do so unfortunately, and that is what fan fiction is for. But at least I will always have my Due South slashy ending.

RayV fan, so the ending isn't my favorite.

The RayV ending was the only thing I didn't like, but I only ever thought of him as a brother figure for Fraser. So my headcanon is he dumped The Stella, met and fell for Maggie and moved up to the Northwest Territories. There is alot of RayV fanfic out there to maybe please you? In any case, with all the slashy subtext Due South teased people with, it was nice to see two men literally ride off into the sunset together and ambiguous enough that mainstream viewers would only view it as two friends setting off for an adventure. I don't think most television shows would do that, and to expect BBC Sherlock to do so is crazy and I am a shipper of Holmes/Watson in almost every adaptation and canon.

That wasn't the original scripted ending for Due South. The original ending had Fraser, Thatcher and Turnbull all in Canada, and it was implied that Thatcher had gone there to pursue a romantic relationshp with Fraser (which is how I thought "COTW" was leaning - Fraser going off with RayK was a surprise, and so was RayV going to Florida with Stella).

In the original ending, both Rays were in Chicago and were being friendly to each other. I am also a RayV fan, and not a F/K fan, so I wish Paul
Gross had stuck to filming the original ending - because then Fraser wouldn't choose Kowalski over RayV. I don't exactly think of RayV as a romantic partner for Fraser, but Fraser still chose going off with Kowalski over choosing to spend time with his friend RayV, and it hurt for me to see that. I thought Fraser was being a very bad friend to RayV. I also thought Paul Gross didn't know anything about Fraser, because it was OOC for Fraser to ignore RayV and go off with Kowalski. Paul Gross should have stuck to acting. His on "COTW" writing stinks.

Paul Gross should have stuck to acting. His writing was terrible. He ignored almost everything about Fraser's characters that was presented by the writes of Seasons 1-2. And I HATE his trying to shove F/K down viewers' throats!

Also, there is just as much "slashy subtext" between Fraser and RayV if you interpret every gesture of friendship and brotherhood as flirting. I think slashy subtext only exists in viewers' minds. There is no factual evidence that Paul Gross deliberately included it, because he's never publicly admitted to doing that.
