Can someone explain to me where the whole "no mysteries in S3" thing came from? I get the character scenes overshadowed the plots but it's not like the plots weren't present.

TEH had the train and terrorist plot as well as waiting to find out how Sherlock did for those who cared.

TSO3 had two mysteries - or can be counted as one big mystery split in three parts.

HLV was all about taking down Magnussen with some drama about Mary's past thrown in for emotional weight.

Overall I'd say there was the same amount of case-solving as there was in S2. ASIB was very case-light and TRF was mostly about out-running Moriarty with the only case-solving being the small section of trying to find the little kids.

The only two really mystery focused episodes I can think of are TBB and HOTB - both of which are usually frowned upon in the fandom.

But as another anon said, the mysteries are always their weakest so better they play to their strengths. Which was true for the most part until the Assassin Mary bullshit twist.

No Canon mysteries is the point, nonny. A Study in Pink was pretty much the only episode that was Canon-compliant, and interesting to watch. Why? Because neither of the pair are good at writing sensible plots. So they let ACD's plot fill in their rough spots. Once they abandoned even that help, their usual problems came back to haunt them, and the show has unfortunately become nothing more than a not-even-vaguely entertaining waste of time.

Meh. YMMV. I still find it entertaining, canon mysteries or no.

To each their own.
