Agreed. The plots were pretty meh anyway. More Sherlock trying to relate to people.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
... But most people loved this season. All the opinions I've read were positive (fandom aside).

Eh I think it's been pretty mixed. I can certainly see where all the people complaining about the people complaining are coming from, but I know a lot of people who thought it was better than the previous series too.

There are a few reasonable critics on Tumblr. They tend to get drowned out by the flailing and squealing. :-P

Well my problem is that the show tried to touch me on an emotional level but it wasn't very successful
So I'd like the cases and mysteries back because at least that's more reliable and also kind of why I started watching Sherlock Holmes in the first place

I dunno, annoyance and anger are emotions and it sure got me to feel those...

Agreed. I was watching Sherlock Holmes because it sounded like an interesting procedural with mysteries. There were pretty much no mysteries in the third season.

They'll never have the balls to do Johnlock, that's for damn sure.

I wish they did though, I really really want to believe that I haven't been queerbaited the whole time.

I'd rather have the Sherlock team doing character bits than mysteries, because their mysteries were always so embarrassingly awful. They're much better at cute fanservicey character moments, so I figure hey, play to your strengths.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Whereas I think both are embarrassingly awful. If they had kept the bar raised as high as they set it for A Study in Pink, we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now.

If you like the season that's fine, but surely you can understand why people watching a show called Sherlock expect, and even prefer, that it focus on the characters solving mysteries than dealing with John Watson's love life, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You don't say? How ever will they get to slobber all over Amanda A. on twitter though without that Mary goodness?

Not OP but, as someone who too loved Series 3 aside from the Mary-plots, I can definitely see why others don't like it and want something that's more focused on mysteries and investigations - if that's the case they should watch Elementary.

I love Sherlock because, as Mofftiss have said, it's not a detective show. It's a show about a detective. It always has been. The mysteries have always been second to whatever relationship drama is going on, whether it's John and Sherlock or Sherlock and Irene or John and Mary or Sherlock and Moriarty. This show is no where near as intelligent as people make out. It's a glorified soap opera - and I personally enjoy that. Does suck for people who don't but, as I said, there are other options and better mystery shows.

Most of the critics and the general public liked series 3. Fandom's reaction was mixed, but there are plenty of people out there who liked it and wish others would stop being so critical.

I was disappointed because all I want are case fics and I can't even get that from the actual show. Also, I'm still not okay with Sherlock killing people.

Can someone explain to me where the whole "no mysteries in S3" thing came from? I get the character scenes overshadowed the plots but it's not like the plots weren't present.

TEH had the train and terrorist plot as well as waiting to find out how Sherlock did for those who cared.

TSO3 had two mysteries - or can be counted as one big mystery split in three parts.

HLV was all about taking down Magnussen with some drama about Mary's past thrown in for emotional weight.

Overall I'd say there was the same amount of case-solving as there was in S2. ASIB was very case-light and TRF was mostly about out-running Moriarty with the only case-solving being the small section of trying to find the little kids.

The only two really mystery focused episodes I can think of are TBB and HOTB - both of which are usually frowned upon in the fandom.

But as another anon said, the mysteries are always their weakest so better they play to their strengths. Which was true for the most part until the Assassin Mary bullshit twist.

I agree Johnlock isn’t going to happen, but IMO the avid 'Johnlock will be canon' set are far outpaced in the nutty race by the people who keep twisting themselves into knots to justify what happened in HLV. That's where I've encountered the most amount of loony. It's like they feel they can't like the season unless they can continue to believe that Sherlock & Mary didn't do something that really wasn't morally justifiable.

In their minds it’s perfectly ok to shoot someone so he doesn’t tell your husband about your past. It is also ok to shoot someone because they’re a blackmailer. Silly me, thinking the standard for deadly force is that your life, or someone else’s, is in imminent danger. Not danger of being embarrassed or having your past revealed, but danger of being killed or at least suffering grievous physical injury at the moment.

I have seen people seriously argue that shooting CAM was the right thing to do because, well, he was a dick. Or because he’d do worse stuff in the future so it was good to get rid of him before he really went off the rails. Think of all the crime we wouldn't have if we made it official policy to kill all the jerks and anyone who might do something bad in the future.

And it was fine for Mary to shoot Sherlock because she loves John so much she just couldn’t bear to lose him. See, it’s romantic. And hey, she totally didn't want him to die because she shot him in the wrong spot. WTF? Yeah, if I don't want someone to die I shoot them in the wrong spot instead of just not shooting them at all. And I don't know about you, but what I really look for in a mate is someone who'll shoot my best friend so I don't find out they used to kill people. That's some true love right there.

This isn’t everyone who liked the season, and I don’t really think these people believe it’s ok to shoot someone under these circumstances IRL (at least, I hope they don’t). But these justifications drive me nuts. The people who aren’t able to admit that what Sherlock & Mary did was not justifiable, morally or legally, are in a far nuttier place to me than the Johnlock people.

It’s possible to like characters who do horrible things. I still like Walter White, but there’s no way in hell I could defend what he did and I’m not going to try. Like the season, like Sherlock & Mary, but please stop insisting that they did the right thing, the just thing, the only thing they could do by killing someone who wasn’t about to kill them.

Tumblr is weird. I loved this third season, it was fun as hell.

I enjoyed this season so much! So, me, too, OP. Though I didn't mind the assassin!Mary storyline that much.

(And I wonder if the people who think Sherlock/John will actually happen are watching the same show as me...)
