I get really, really tired of people bashing my religion as The Root of All Evil despite 1. There being church leaders [not to mention over half of the lay persons] who don't agree with the main stances taken on the issues that they're usually being bashed for, 2. being the only thing that's kept me from committing suicide.

Seriously, it's like they don't even realize that treating it like a monolith hurts people.

People should just not go around insulting other people's Gods (and to follow that through, religious beliefs), is just what it is. It's not nice and it's not helpful. (Also on the off-chance they're actually in the right, you're screwed.)

Although I admit I have a hard time with Scientology. But I try to keep my mouth shut on the subject.

I think it's dangerous to decide that religion is the source of bigotry and ignore the way other aspects of society have been tainted too. I can sympathize with antitheists who think that on the whole religion does more harm than good, but I can't go along with people who think that eradicating religion would get rid of institutionalized prejudices too.

Re: Non-fandom confessions gooooo

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
That bothers me, too. It's not just that they ignore other aspects of society. They also ignore the fact that religion is a human creation. At some point, people made a conscious choice to put bigotry in there, which means they were bigots to begin with.

If you get rid of religion, people will just find another excuse to hate one another. The fact that there are racist, sexist, and homophobic atheists is all the proof you need to know that it's true.

so what if they are?

I don't really care for Catholicism for a number of reasons (some of which are emotional/associative) but if anon is Catholic, then obviously it's helped them and they're not hurting anyone.

Well I mean, outside supporting an organisation/ideology that's caused just unbelieveably tremendous amounts of damage.

But apart from that, sure.

Re: Non-fandom confessions gooooo

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's hardly alone in having done a tremendous amount of damage historically. Very few institutions and ideologies are historically perfect - in fact just about none are - and the Church has done a tremendous amount of good in the world as well.

Not everyone who belongs to a certain belief system is 100% supportive of whatever institution it's associated with.

Right.

But by virtue of supporting it, you are invariably supporting it as a whole.

It's very difficult to unpick the damaging elements from it as a whole when it's a coherent system of belief ordained by god.

Which applies more generally to other groups (political parties etc), and you have to weigh up the benefit you feel the group brings against the damage it causes, the liklihood of influencing change etc. Perhaps that balance is positive, either way it's something to be aware of and that you have to answer for - if only to your self.

If your religious organization is generally a shit show, and has done a bunch of horrible things, then you need to suck it the fuck up and realize that that criticism is valid.

I'm not going to be nice to someone who says they're in the KKK just because they claim to me face-to-face that they aren't actually racist, they're just in it for the community.

Re: Non-fandom confessions gooooo

Wow. I'm not affiliated with any organized religion, but no.

Re: Non-fandom confessions gooooo

If you're OP, you stated "my religion" and you mentioned community leaders, which implies that you have some level of organization and you aren't just a cultist. I have a hard time believing you happen to be part of a religion that isn't organized in some way that people believe is the root of all evil.

Unless you're a Satanist. Are you a Satanist?

I once watched a televised debate about the ethics of using genetic screening and "designer babies".

The guy who ran the company that did genetic screening said something along the lines of: "If I could screen for the religious gene in people, I would."

What the actual fuck.

Like, I can understand disagreeing with someone, but wanting to actually wipe out the vast majority of the population for disagreeing with your viewpoint? What the fuck is wrong with some people.

Yeah, I agree.

Actually, as a Christian, I'm one of the first people to criticize the church as a whole because it does some shitty things. But it's so annoying when people act like All Christians Are Horrible People or, yeah, treating it like a monolith because there is so much diversity even within the church.

Getting pissed at religion is kind of like getting pissed at the knife instead of the guy stabbing people with it, and then saying all knives are evil and everything would be better if they just went away.

A knife is literlly a tool.

Religion is invariably a philosophical appproach on how to live you rlife with a moralisitc element.

That makes it a tad more culpable in your actions.

Re: Non-fandom confessions gooooo

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2014-02-20 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Religion is a philosophical tool instead of a physical one, but it still can't act, or even exist, independent of human manipulation, it can't be "culpable" of anything. Take people out of the equation and religion won't go around roaming the plains looking for new prey.

It influences just as it is influenced by people.

Unless I suppose you're arguing that people can't be influenced by ideas and systems of thought, which seems like it would be incredibly hard to defend, but I'd certainly be interested in seeing you try.
