I'm not sure that "she's awesome because she has dragons" is really a theory. Because, I mean, she has dragons. This is canon. I think the "awesome" bit falls under the "opinion" header.

I guess I'm in a nitpicky mood.

Yup. I've never heard anyone say she's awesome exclusively because she has dragons. Its usually more like she's awesome and her having dragons adds to the awesomeness of her scenes.

You don't know a lot of casual fans, do you? Because whenever I ask people who just watch the show why they like her, the answer is usually "she's a hot badass chick with dragons, haha!" Like, I'm pretty sure 90% of those people wouldn't give a shit about her if she didn't have dragons.

I still think its probably more about her badass scenes. Yes, part of that is the dragons, but I think that's just one element. Its still about her being an awesome, powerful woman. She just happens to have dragons to help.

But pretty much all of Daenerys' badassery is linked to her dragons. Walking into the flames to let the dragons hatch, letting her dragons burn the slavers, threatening people while her dragons sit next to her ... There's a reason she gets way more love from casual viewers than any of the other powerful badass women in the series. That reason being dragons. If Asha had those dragons, Asha would be the big fan favourite. If Sansa had those dragons, Sansa would be the badass awesome chick with the dragons. I'm not saying there's nothing more to Daenerys than her dragons, I'm just saying that for a lot of show fans, especially casual show fans, that is her main appeal, and if anyone else had those dragons, they would care about that character and not about her.

I think that's a pretty narrow reading of those scenes, though. Dragons were only part of them. Dany takes command of the Unsullied by using her brains while hiding the fact that she speaks Valerian. Yes, then, her dragons help burn the slavers. But that scene would be just as awesome if she found another way to get the Unsullied. Season 1 culminates in her getting the dragons, yes, but even before that we see her growing from a timid girl into someone with great inner strength who stands up for herself. By season 3, she's become a queen. You can see the power in her scenes. And thats what draws people to her as much as the dragons.

Basically, I disagree. I think Dany would be just as awesome without the dragons, and I think even the casual viewers would agree on that. I think it will be interesting to see if viewers keep loving her in season 4 when she starts making mistakes, but I disagree that the love from her is based only on the dragons.

I like her. *shrug*

Is this fandom one of those fandoms where you're not allowed to dislike someone popular or...?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you. And based on the books alone, she never exactly falls in love with Drogo as much as start learning how to make the best of her situation, and regret him slightly after his death. Or more precisely regret how his death forced her to start taking some initiative and take responsibility for her own life?

But I don't hate her or anything: she is just not likable or admirable in any way, that's all. Because honestly, it's not like any other character is likable, really. None of them are, in fact. I guess that is why I stopped reading it: all the characters are not really sympathetic - unless they are downright hateful or despicable, so it's all relative I guess...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
None of the characters are sympathetic and likeable? What about Davos? Brienne? Bran? Ned? They're all fairly traditional "good" people, nice and likeable and good-hearted. And even a lot of the less morally good characters are at least relatable in some way, depending on your personal preferences in a character.

Sorry, I can only address the books not really the show,,,

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Relatable: of course, slightly. But not truly likeable and I am not going to spoil you by answering directly, but even so... Er. No, not really.

Take Ned for instance. Pitiable, maybe. Heartbreaking, even. But sympathetic? Relatable? No: there is too much we do not know about him and his back story -and his sister's- to be able to truly understand him.

But what we do know for sure is that the extent to which he doesn't see what is going on right in front of his eyes is deliberate blindness to both Jon's and his own wife's anguish. And the likely result of it, even if things had not exploded as they did would have destroyed Jon or at the very least warped him irreparably.

And say, Brienne? She is just so... stupid (again, it's better if I do not explain what I mean by it as it would contain too many spoilers, but). Her physical strength apparently mandates a corresponding stupidity? Argh.

And as for Bran, my tolerance for spoiled kids has never been very high and... well, maybe you'll see later what I mean, but let's just say that I am not impressed by the way his character turns out.

Don't get me wrong, I like G.R.R. Martin's books in general, but these are a really bad example of what he can write when not writing a genre parody. All of his other books show that he is a master at writing great (though not necessarily heroic) characters. But likable heroes is not what this saga is about, by his own admission.

Note: I am sure the show cleaned up and whitewashed a lot the characters a la 'No, no, Han Solo did not shoot first but only defended himself', but even so, I don't suppose any of the main characters are that different from the source material.

Ned's sister asked him to promise her something. We're not told what it was, but from the way his thoughts follow the same pattern whenever he thinks about it, we can deduce what it was, and that tells us why he can't reveal it to his wife or, especially, to Jon, however much he might want to. Keeping the secret is about more than his own honour.

Brienne isn't stupid, she's emotionally fragile. She has feelings she's never learned to deal with -- she falls in love with handsome heroes like the young girl she never got the chance to be, she feels maternal towards the children she'll never have. These feelings inform her decisions.

And Bran... Bran does nothing wrong in book 5. What happens to him is not the result of any character flaw.

I actually kind of dislike Ned. I mean, not only was he honorable but stupid, but he actually endangered his family. And he held people to impossible standards without ever trying to find out the whole truth (case in point: Jaime). And, particularly, his relationship with Robert that he continues in spite of everything and he never calls Robert out.

So he's just as layered and grey as anyone else in my mind, and maybe in some ways worse because he doesn't recognize it in himself.

I agree with the others, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think most book readers who have read up to the 5th one would agree that she's gullible, naive and annoying, OP. Worst character arc ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-22 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Many people think this, but not most. In the 5th book she acted her age. Before she was old for her age, so it was somewhat surprising to see her acting like a child. But she is a child, so its understandable that sometimes she would act her age. Naive and maybe gullible, yes. She made mistakes. But not annoying or "worst character arc ever".
