They're usually portrayed with weird implications/fetish reasons, but they're better than nothing and it's nice to them more often than not treated as characters.

If it's a cisguy who gets mistaken for a cisgirl, or a cisgirl who gets mistaken for a cisguy, whatever.

Applied to any other situation, no. The problem isn't the word, it's that it gets applied to everything when that's not what it means. Trans* characters aren't "traps" and it's insulting to call one a trap.

Traps are cis male characters that look/dress like women. You shouldn't use that word for trans characters, only for cis characters that because of their feminine appearance look like women.

it implies evil intent on the side of the genderqueer presenting person, when it's actually about some a hole who feels uncomfortable with anything outside of their cis-binarism and proceeds to be rude as fuck

The term and idea is mostly homophobic idiocy, is what I think. And insulting. But the use of the word is an excellent indicator of who I should avoid in the future.

there is nothing genderqueer about it, and thus nothing positive about it.

Traps are for people who think it's funny to bait guys with what they think is a hot girl, only to pull up a skirt and HAHAHA DICK. Most of these characters don't present female for positive reasons, sometimes not even for reasons at all. It's backwards and last-century in terms of thinking.

but then you get into, how much of gender identity is presentation and what positive reasons someone who doesn't identify as anything but male would want to wear outward markers of femininity and that's a bee's nest I'm not getting into today. there is too much hard drinking to be done and I haven't started yet.

People complaining about the use of the word: propose a new one instead. Because I can't find one that includes cross-dressers boys AND boys that look like girls not because they try to but because they were born with a feminine appearance.
