for me the line is when the man is likely to be dead of natural causes at the point a woman reaches her sexual peak (mid forties if you didn't know).
men who look for women below this age are generally only doing it so they can exploit the power imbalance such a relationship inherently has. it's a very subtle form of rape, and should be dealt with as such. unfortunately the justice system in most countries is run by creepy old men who are unlikely to want to punish sexual predators of this type.

exactly right, although I disagree about the genders not being a factor on this. men reach their sexual peak around the ages of 18-20, so I think it's perfectly acceptable, even preferable for women of any age to be attracted to young men and to act on it.

I probably sound like a dirty old woman, but I really don't mean to. this is all based on real studies, and let's be honest, have you ever heard of a young man complaining about the attentions of a more mature woman? have you ever heard any stories about young men who have been used and abused by their older lovers? there is clearly something wrong with an older man who pursues young women, but I don't think we can always say this is the case with older women.

Uh yeah, I have. I used to know a guy who was in his early twenties who was hit on by women in their 30s and 40s and he was completely creeped out by it. It's a matter of power imbalance. Personally, I think regardless of what genders are involved, if there is a 10+ year age gap between a relationship with someone who is 18 or in their early twenties, the older party probably doesn't have the best intentions in mind. There isn't a lot of common ground, and the lust for someone who is barely an adult yet is really creepy. I will admit if I meet a couple with this huge age gap that managed to have an even power balance between them and had a lot of common interests, then I would consider them an exception to the rule.

Not to drop real science into this, but women reach their peak fertility (i.e. are more likely to become pregnant per cycle) between 22-26. Many cycles in the teenaged years are still anovulatory. Fertility declines very little between 26 to 34, then rapidly after 35 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002173/).

In addition, one of the reasons teen pregnancies are considered undesirable isn't merely social, but because of the havoc pregnancy under 20 can wreak on girls' still-developing bodies: increased risks of placenta previa, pregnancy-induced hypertension, premature delivery, significant anemia, and toxemia, as well as being 2 to 6 times more likely to born at a dangerously low birth weight. So it depends what you consider "prime child-bearing age" - most fertile? Early-mid 20s. Healthiest children? Late 20s to early 30s. Teenaged years? Some of the worst for both.

Not sure where or how the "teenaged girls are the most fertile" myth got started, particularly when a simple trip down to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_and_female_fertility) could dissuade you, but I've seen it all over the place from people (presumably) very unfamiliar with the science and I'm not quite sure how it got started.

And for the record, the findings are similar for men. Their virility peaks early, but they have the healthiest children (controlling for all other factors) in their late 20s and early 30s, with fathers between 35-44 having healthier children than fathers under 20. Men are still fertile at older ages than women, of course, but like women with extremely advanced maternal age, age linked risk factors start to increase dramatically (e.g. low birth weight, Down syndrome, etc. for older mothers; autism, low IQ, schizophrenia, etc. for older fathers). Peak baby-havin' time appears to be 20-45 for both sexes.

"sexual peek" and "prime child-bearing age" are two different things. Also, teens is not prime child-bearing age.

OFFS, this 'rape inflation' has gotten totally out of hand. Look, "rape" does not mean "any sexual situation which is in any way the least bit questionable or skeevy," it means sex that is forced upon someone without their consent. Period. If consent exists, it may not necessarily be a good or healthy situation; in some cases it may even be some other sex-related crime, but it's not rape.
